    E.L.O have loads of great songs and Jeff Lynne is a genius. He sounds just as good in concert at 70+ as he did when they did the studio sounds. You should watch the flash mob versions of this song. They should play this if the pandemic ever finishes as it fits so well.

    That spaceship is kind of their trademark. It goes with the type of futuristic music they play, and even have giant ships floating over the stage at concerts. They have about 200 songs! A deep rabbit- hole! Try 'Tightrope, 'Last Train to London', 'Twilight', 'Starlight'.

    As for Xanadu's soundtrack, the album is one side Olivia Newton-John and one side ELO. The title track is on the ELO side because it is essentially an ELO song featuring ONJ, not the other way around. Written and produced by Jeff Lynne with the rest of the guys playing and singing backing vocals. There is a lesser known version sung by Jeff which is really cool.

  • @vixtravels

    Terrific video!
    I think the first time ELO used the "spaceship" design was on the cover of a New World Record from 1976. It was designed by artist John Kosh & if you look carefully on the cover of NWR & split the space ship in two it is actually based on the old style Wurlitzer juke box with the curved top. On their 1977 album "Out of the Blue" the spaceship became beautifully stylized by the artist Shusei Nagaoka in a much more sci-fi fashion. In 1978 ELO did Wembly live & the whole band appeared in a huge spaceship which opened & closed & acted as the stage. The actual reason for the spaceship, I have no idea but many bands of the 70's featured sci-fi cover art. As a kid in the late 70's I became so fascinated by the ELO spaceship concept I wrote a short story called "The Musical Thing" which was basicially a massive spaceship which had the music of ELO as the engine sounds & everywhere the ship adventured it brought peace love & happyness to all. But hey! This was the 70's right LOL! I ditched the story by 1981 as I began to study for my exams, but I still find it fascinating.
    Thank you for this lovely video. If you get chance check out "I'm Alive" for the same album as All Over the World (Xanadu soundtrack) that is a great song too! xx

    You want something mega orchestral and cinematically epic? Try the popular deep cut that Jeff played as a concert opener, “Tightrope”. It will blow your mind.
    In 1976, ELO’s New World Record introduced the famous colorful jukebox logo. For 1977’s Out Of The Blue, the same designer transformed the logo into a spaceship and created one of the most famous record covers ever. They didn’t repeat the spaceship on covers for the next 4 albums until they split up in 1986.
    The record company now loves using different versions of the spaceship on Greatest Hits and new albums because it has become so closely associated with ELO during their late 1970s domination.
    Not necessarily related to the spaceship, Jeff has always had slight SciFi themes running through his music since the beginning.

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer 3 года назад

      Yeah, a fun story to add on to what ChronoMATT said about the same album cover designer transforming the jukebox logo from ELO's '76 album into a spaceship for their '77 double album. That designer's son asked him one day to have a frisbee catch with him, and on his way out the door the designer had a bunch of big stickers of the logo lying around so he slapped one onto the frisbee. During that catch, watching the logo spin around, he got the inspiration to turn the logo into a spaceship for the new ('77) album cover he'd just been hired to design. So cool how stuff like that happens!

  • @flanflinger37
    @flanflinger37 3 года назад +4

    Great reaction guys, loved it 👍👍 The spaceship appeared first on the Out of the Blue album as a futuristic version of their band logo that appeared on the previous album A New World Record. That logo is based on a Wurlitzer juke box. The spaceship became synonymous with the band and is still used by the latest incarnation, Jeff Lynne’s ELO.

      I am not quite as fatalistic as I am hopeful, and that hope is not at all invested in this world swimming to shore. We will drown. We will. So maybe I am ultimately fatalistic. There is a whole lot of love to give in the meantime, and a lot of people in need more than I am.
      If we can be a fresh breath of air to someone, we have to take a breath first for ourselves. I am still stuck back there trying to swim to the surface so I can rescue others. I push people up to the surface, but keep swallowing water.
      That is not my mission, though. I want to do what I can while we are here.
      There are still people out there than really need some fresh vegetables. Being human is a real thing! I wished, during Covid, that I could make meals for families that could not get out. To feed people is a fine line for me. I love to do it. It also makes me feel happy. So whom am I helping? Myself or others? As I struggle with that, there are people that need help. should of done the video version of this, its so good with all the dancing from little children to old grannies and lots of every one, it makes you want to get up join in and boogie all over the world, Jeff comes from the music scene of Birmingham England from the late sixties early seventies formed ELO with others along with Roy wood, another genius who left to form the group Wizard, who had an international Christmas hit with i wish it could be Christmas every day, played in supermarkets the world over at Christmas, but Jeff has taken ELO to global recognition superstar level, the original 4 members of ELO have been officially introduced into the rock and roll hall of fame, the best comment ELO ever had was reportedly from john Lennon, when he first saw them he said to the others, hey these boys are gonna take over from us and be the new Beatles there that good, Jeff later went on to be producer of some of the Beatles classic numbers for them, there's fifty years of amazing music to discover from Jeff and ELO there's not a disappointing number amongst them

    From reddit: Not sure if there is any meaning or symbolism, but it is based on a 1946 Wurlitzer jukebox model 4008 speaker. /The spaceship itself doesn’t have any special meaning, the guy from United Artists that designed the logo on ANWR then turned it into a spaceship for OOTB. It was always more of an aesthetic for the band and a promotional tool really.

    The UFO iirc started out as the logo on the album A New World Record. I think its inspired by a jukebox/Wurlitzer type look. This was then morphed into a UFO for the cover of Out OF The Blue. The live tour also featured a giant saucer that they appeared out of. Really from then on the symbol stuck and has re-appeared time after time. I think the 2017 live at Wembley stadium show also featured a saucer at the top of the set.

    A great reaction gents to a song that can't fail to get you moving and demonstrates another step change in the E.L.O sound when compared to their 70's stuff. "Tighrope" next please 👍😊

    I'm a middle-aged heavy meatal lead guitarist and singer, but if I want to feel good, I either reach for Iron Maiden's "Hallowed Be Thy Name" or anything from ELO, especially "Concerto For A Rainy Day".

    If you watched XANADU then you should recognize this song. It was in the movie. Its the song that plays when they are in the shops trying on clothes.

    Jeff Lynne wrote 'pretty much' all of ELO's material, with the obvious exception of "Roll Over Beethoven" which has to be credited to Chuck Berry!

    "Why is there a UFO on almost every single one of their albums"
    Well, there's a slightly deep side to it and a light topic side to it...
    The light quick answer - Specifically with ELO, there's no deep meaning. It was just something that was thought up at the last minute by a guy named "John Kosh" - an English Art Director, album cover designer, graphic artist, and documentary producer/director. However, the actual execution of the iconic artwork - specifically for the "Out of the Blue" album was done by the late Japanese graphic designer "Shusei Nagaoka Androla" (1936-2015) ... who also did album cover artwork for The Carpenters, Jefferson Starship, and Earth, Wind & Fire. There is a book about him - "The Works of Shusei Nagaoka (Book One) "Then there was also the physical on-stage Flying Saucer (for their laser light shows) - conceived of by ELO's manager, Don Arden.
    Oh, and fun fact - there was another band that was inspired by that the "Out of the Blue" album artwork called "The Bubble Gum Orchestra (BGO)" for their own CD album titled "Out of This World" that has a guitar as a spaceship and has that same tiny "space plane" coming in on guitar's landing bay.
    There was a album cover for an ELO release in Germany (titled - The Way Life's Meant To Be) that went a bit further with this spaceship theme. It had that same flying saucer from the "Out of the Blue" album going into a super mother ship like the Star Wars Death Star - but without the death ray dish.
    Now the slightly deeper story -
    There is a running theme with a lot of these albums from various bands of the 1960's & 1970s was "Mind Expansion" and "Higher Consciousness" - whether it was to come through inter-dimensional contact, extraterrestrial contact or even through a focus on the mystical - like Astrology. I'm not saying that every single band (or singing group) out there was doing this at the time - but a great many were. Check out a singing group & song called "The Fifth Dimension - The Age of Aquarius - Let the Sunshine in" or The Rolling Stones' "2000 Light Years From Home." or the Beatles - "Within You Without You. ""The general message was a striving for world peace, harmony and that way more was always going on than our limited perceptions of physical grimy mundane reality let on. A lot of other bands had flying saucers, UFOs, planets or Zodiac Symbols on their covers ex. Boston, Parliament/Funkadelic - the Mothership, UFO, Thin Lizzy, ZZ Top, Yes, Rush and lots more.

      Loved the comment and the lighter and deeper answer’s! You have a lot of details. Totally appreciate it. The Japanese artist and all the song mentions. Plus the comparisons in album covers. Thanks again.

    And you asked for it, dancing all over the world. ruclips.net/video/wh3i3vWgPyk/видео.html I don't know on the artwork but keep in mind, this was pre-computer back in the 70s. Jeff loves ships because IMO, he's from another planet. Just putting it out there, his live shows are even more spectacular.

    The UFO is ELO's ride. It represents the future and the musical boundaries that ELO pushed through a mixture of traditional and electronic instruments. While (in its day) Twilight was considered one of ELO's weaker pieces (???) it is now getting the love it deserves and further takes one on a musical adventure. I recommend looking up the video "Daicom IV Anime Video." They used ELO's song without permission, but that one video changed America's perception of Anime and influenced a generation of new movie makers, including the people who brought you The Matrix.

    Jeff Lynne writes and produces everything. he was also with the Traveling Willburys, not only that he wrote and produced a number of Tom Petty hits. And apparently Tom Petty was reputed to have said that Jeff Lynne has forgotten more about music the he never knew. If you listen to Tightrope the beginning is a UFO landing and the end of Turn to Stone is a UFO taking off
