Meiosis 1 and Meiosis 2
Why we need meiosis?
Significance of Meiosis
Meiosis: A special cell division creating sperm and egg cells (gametes) with half the genetic material (haploid) compared to body cells (diploid). This enables the correct chromosome number in offspring and allows for genetic diversity.
Phases:
Meiosis I:
Interphase I: DNA replication and chromosome preparation.
Prophase I: Chromosomes condense, nuclear envelope breaks down, crossing over (genetic exchange) occurs.
Metaphase I: Homologous chromosomes align in the cell center.
Anaphase I: Homologous chromosomes separate to opposite poles.
Telophase I & Cytokinesis I: Two daughter cells formed, each with half the chromosomes (still in pairs).
Meiosis II:
Interphase II: Brief preparation for division in each daughter cell.
Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II, Telophase II: Similar to mitosis, but each daughter cell from I divides again.
Result: Four haploid daughter cells (single chromatids) become sperm or egg cells.
Significance:
Ensures correct chromosome number in offspring.
Enables genetic diversity through random chromosome assortment and crossing over.
Crucial for sexual reproduction and evolution.
