We visited the old airfield about 2005. Even then it had changed so much that I hardly recognized it. Some of the runway was still there with buildings built on the runway. There were still some of the barracks there, but mine was torn down. The control tower was already converted to a house. Part of the runway was used for car racing. For me it was kind of sad seeing it lost to history. I have so many memories here, but sadly I lost so many friends here as well I was shot down 2/22/44 Les Schrenk
I first went to Podington airfield in 1966 to attend the first drag race meetings and as an aviation enthusiast become very interested in it's history and the 92 nd Bomb Group. From just about 20 years after the Americans left when most of it was pretty intact even with the two hangers it has steadily turned into one huge slum area. Such sacrilege. I'll not go again. Better to go to Podington church where there is a visitor's book with many entries from Americans associated with the airfield. Fascinating reading.
