  • David Harris served 20 months in prison as a Viet Nam war, draft resister. He was also student body president at Stanford University. He gave the keynote address at the 40th anniversary of the "April 3rd Movement" - a student anti-war protest group that took over the Applied Electronics building for 9 days in 1969. Here are Harris' reflections of the 60's activism and its political and personal significance.

I was a draft resister during the late 60's and followed David to prison serving 6 months in Safford Federal Prison Camp in 1971. My great, great grandfather is said to have to have crossed the ocean 3 times to avoid the draft. My son currently has refused to register for the draft. I am proud of him for that. It's become a family tradition.

my ex is 5 years younger than David and had a high lottery number for the draft. I was in peaceful anti-war protests, graduated HS in 1970. Since the 80's been working with Vietnamese people who came here by boat to escape the war. I was never in harm's way like that.

David Harris has much wisdom and courage he went through. some people who are in denial don't want to learn about what David Harris really knows about taking on those who are warmongers. Thank you Michael for adding this to You Tube!

Soldiers did what they did because it was the patriotic thing to do, hippies did what they did because it was the right thing to do. I couldn't be more proud to be a hippie.

The hippies were right on many issues of the day then and still issues to this day. The youth of today need to get to work if they want a better world. It is not easy but the work must be done to take on the establishment. The struggle continues. RIP David Harris

He was a force just like Joan Baez...spoke the truth and took action.

I read respect and love David's commitment, but what about Joan Bsez? She put his name in the movement! Bob.

I must comment on Betsy Schaffer's comments and also traumaqueen45's. First of all the name calling from Betsy is about the most immature and stupid thing I've seen in a long time. To traumaqueen45 I must say you did what you wanted to do. If you believed in nationalism or patriotism or whatever that's your right. You enlisted and served but I hope you did not do it expecting everyone to be thankful or something. I didn't ask you to go to war because I don't believe in it. Personally I respect David Harris even more than veterans. He has real courage too.

That's OK David, since you refused to be drafted, I enlisted in the WACS & when asked what duty assignment I wanted, I requested to go to Vietnam. While you were protesting, I stood with my head held high, while American citizens, who also protested the war, through eggs, rotten food at me & often spit on me, calling me a baby killer.
You don't have to be a "warmonger" as Betsy Stewart called those of us who served. What were merely citizens, both male & female who appreciated the liberties we have & were willing to lay down our lives in order to protect those liberties & also help others obtain that liberty.
How many of those who think David Harris is "courageous" will count on him to willingly protect your life & that of your family, when ISIS begins jihad on US shores? It doesn't matter if you don't believe ISIS is already on US shore, because evidence has been provided they are here & even Obama has admitted that ISIS has made it's way to the US.
When the time comes, will you call for those you call "intellectuals" or will you ask those who are truly "courageous" to help you? Would you be willing to do whatever it takes to not only to protect your own family, but also that of your neighbors & friends? If you can say that you would do whatever it takes to protect your loved ones, neighbors & friends, then you are doing nothing different than those of us who served in Vietnam or any other war. We fight to win the freedom of those who want that freedom & ask for the help. Those of you who criticize us, are the ones who truly can't comprehend having your freedom taken from you. When the time comes for you to make that choice, I hope you make the right one. Otherwise you will be losing your life & that of your loved ones for not having the courage to stand up for that precious freedom.

Trauma queen & Betsy Schaffer...it is because of people like you who are brain washed into thinking any war is a great war to fight, and you are always on the correct side of history, which Viet Nam was not, nor Iraq, nor any war since WWII, that we continue to be militarized with a military 8 times larger than any other nation. War is good business! There were 25,000 private contractors in Iraq that made Billions of dollars with our privatized war. Halliburton/Cheney! You can die for them but no one else should have to.You are/were not defending anything but Wall street.Freedom at the end of a gun barrel. If people like you to were a little more educated like David Harris & and other "intellectual elites" we would have no wars. The world is on the brink and you are both spouting old, tired, policies that have brought us to the brink! Wake up morons, jerks, pansy, sorry excuse for human beings. Everything you called Harris: Look in the mirror!

You spoke of freedom, do you mean like the freedom to chose whether or not a foreign power governs you or not? Like the freedom to have an election to determine who governs you? Here's another you apparently have not considered, the freedom not to have you children burned alive. If reminding you of these realities makes you feel ashamed, so be it.

1971 was my senior year of college. With a Selective Service number of 11, I was inducted in mid-May and sent to Basic Training at the end of June. I certainly opposed the war and didn’t want to enter the service but I did. I wasn’t privileged, I didn’t go to a, “name, high profile school “ and was an exceedingly average student. I didn’t have a social life, summers I worked in a mill. Further, I was brought up to obey laws . I believed then and still do JFK’s words to, “Ask not …”. And so I served. I was an Army Medic. Not to make more of what I did, I didn’t spend one day in Vietnam but I did serve honorably. If David Harris and his ilk were so oppressed to serving in the military, he/they should have simply left the country. He deserves no apology as he stated he should receive.
