In this video I am giving a simple example of how a zip can be added into a leather messenger bag. The techniques shown can be used to add zips to different bags or for making pockets and so on.
The bag is made from my Build Along pattern 6, please use the link above to purchase if you are interested!

Very comprehensive instruction on how to put in zipper to look professional. Im impressed with the neatness and accuracy of your work!
Here's a video showing an example of stitching a zip into a bag which quite a few people have asked about. If you'd like to make the bag (or buy one of my bags) please see the links in the description.
This video was uploaded yesterday but due to some technical issues I had to re-upload it sorry!
Hmm..I thought that it was deja vu all over again!
Michelle...it looked like tanners bond. I’ve found it on amazon and at Tandy leather. Hope this helps.
Your videos have made getting back into leather work so much easier. It has been 20 years and technology has really changed. Thank you for all the tips and techniques.
Always good to see your work. Thank you for taking the time to show us how it's done.

Another great high-quality video. I've been thinking about starting to use zippers in some of my work, and this was very helpful. Thank you, Ian!
Perfect timing! I was just starting on a bag that needed a zipper and I was not sure how to attach it. Thank you Ian, great tutorial as always!
Great pointers and demo, Ian. I'm going to buy the pattern. Thanks for all you do.

It helped me a lot, thanks for this wonderfull tutorial
Basting tape is a great help on such things. Great video, learned a lot 👍
Great tutorial
How beautiful you work.
Best regards from León Guanajuato México.
that was a lot of help...,Thank you
"A clever man makes his own tools." You, Ian, are a very clever man. On you next folding jig, you may want to line the bottom with something 'non-smooth'. When you close the press, the leather moves a tiny bit. Just a suggestion. Oh, thanks for the video. Years later....
Thanks for another great video Ian. Two sided tape is a good alternative to glue when putting the zip in place. It is a little bit less fussy than glue.
I quite like the tape yes it's not easy to stitch through though as it stays sticky so you have to be careful where you use it!
Thank You.
Thank you! I love the video. I’m kind of confused about where the side tabs go at the end of the video.’
Just a tip I learned from Samurai Carpenter, Jessie...
Go to your home improvement store, and pick up "Door Skins" thin wood veneer, and make your templates out of that. It's thin enough to cut with a razor, but thick enough to be stiff and durable for many uses.
Before, I was using plastic placemats for picnics but they were too floppy and crap. Those door skins work wonders!
Also, they come "door sized" (Duhh lol) so you can make large patterns for whole skins.
Hope this helps, I've learned so much from you and your channel, it would be nice if I could give something back.
P.s. Also, I use medical paper tape on finished leather for any taping/sticking needs. Get the kind for babies or sensitive skin and it wont leave marks, or adhesive on the finished leather. Helpful for taping down templates, or holding peices in register for stamping or making holes... etc.
3M medical paper tape is the best, and I find it comes off perfectly, but also has great holding strength!
Haven’t seen those in the UK
@@Leodis.Leather If it isn't feasible, an alternative is "Hardboard" its thin sheets of MDF, or more readily available to you and something you might already have on hand, is bag stiffener. A friend of mine uses thick bag stiffener for all his templates, but I haven't personally tried it, nor am I fully aware of what it is. lol
Again, I hope this helps. I know what a serious pain paper templates can be!
Such an amazing video as always. Thanks Ian. I only wish you would have shown how you did the last parts, like attaching the other side of the zip with leather to the bag and what you did with the long tabs with as much detail as you did everything else. I didn’t quite understand that last part.
I showed attaching the other side to the point of glueing the parts together and marking the stitching, after that it was just stitched through. The side tabs are wrapped around as shown in the pattern they're just also joined to the zip piece making it continuous rather than 3 separate pieces in this case, it could be done as easily with 3 pieces.
I was also a little confused about how the tabs were completed. Great video though. Thanks.
Hi Ian, I'd still like to see a short video describing how to attach the side tabs to the bag, as it will be different here than in the normal bag video (without the zip). Thanks, -John
Is there an easier way to do the skiving (for people who are less coordinated)?
Does the other video show how you fold over the tabs from the zip compartment? I want to make something like this for my mother.
Instead of messing with glue, I've seen you can use basting tape.
I'm glad I watched this because I wanted to know how to fold over leather edges like that so this had a bonus bit of info. Thank you!
This gives me more ideas for making a carrying bag for my mother's 21" tablet.
There's a few places there where some tape would be nice, to mask where you don't want glue, and to hold that slot straight while you glue it? Sellotape would do it, leaves no residue to speak of.
It would be nice to see a short video where you attach the side tabs with rivets, as it's going to be somewhat more difficult to do with the zipper in the way. Can you still get your rotary hole punch in there easily to punch the holes in the side of the bag? It also looks like the side tabs may fold back on themselves inside the bag, before being attached with rivets. I have your pattern pack for this bag and it's great, by the way.
Great video I was looking for exactly this.
What glue do you use please , Iv got contact adhesive but soon as it touches its no going back and Iv only jus got into this work
Hello Ian as usual very good video, could you tell me what kind of rubber cement do you use in this video and where order it,thanks.
I know this is an older video, but I'm just now coming across it. If you see this comment, could you tell me if you know of any issues with zippers with metal teeth vs. plastic teeth regarding strength and/or failure tendencies?
Great stuff man! Where can i order that skiving tool with replaceable blades?
Hi Ian, thanks for the email, i am not sure if i missed it, but could you cut down the zipper on the open side instead.. that way you would have the factory end and be trimming the part that should never see an exploding unravel? I am new to leather, so that might be an obvious explanation, and am sorry to ask if it is.
Another great vid Ian. I'm still a bit unsure whether I like using the tape or not. I know the thread isn't probably ever going to break and the tape allows for re-positioning if I stuff up (which is more often that I'd like). But, I like the way the glue penetrates the leather. Also I've found that burnishing the edge seems better with the glue? Sometimes I seem to have a parting line with the tape.
+HunterValleyDan you definitely don’t want tape in the middle of an edge you’re trying to burnish I think that will cause you problems
Thanks Ian. You've confirmed what I was starting to suspect was true. Cheers.
Great video! And that is beautiful leather! What kind is it and what color did you dye it? Thank you!
where do you get your glue with a brush from? I've struggled to get contact adhesive in the uk for some reason? and postage from america is huge lol
does anyone know how to attach the side tabs with rivets?
dimana kedai menjual zip
Hi Ian! What type of leather is This? Veg tan that you dyed?
❤❤❤
What kind and brand of leather are you using here? Is that Horween Dublin?
Hi Ian, I love your videos and I am willing to start working the leather, I lkive in the Uk, do you have any suggestion where to buy the leather? Because I find it a little difficult to find website where to get it.
thanks and well done for the videos!

I’ve seen someone using double sided tape for securing the zip
You can do but the glue on it doesn’t seem to go off it stays sticky so if you then sew through it it gums up your needles and makes the stitching more fiddly
Ahhh ok 👍🏻
Bit off subject, where do you buy your burnish cream from? Also stains ?
could you add a lining to this somehow? I'm trying to figure out how to make a zipper pocket in a leather bag with a fabric lining.
Of course
:-)
