To frame it as "losing a job" is a really helpful way to put it. Like with any other job we typically fully accept that you will lose your job if you do something unethical. Why shouldn't that apply in this case???

    • @MoniSour
      @MoniSour 4 года назад +34

Fun fact: Shane lost a real life job, along with getting his brother, and I think 1 or 2 other employees fired because he filmed a video at his job. The video had them
      -pole dancing
-showed a few people’s before and after weight loss pictures on a wall joking that they gained it all back (he worked for a weight loss program)
-Had multiple coworkers read graphic or nsfw content aloud (I didn’t understand what they were reading but I remember the line “that horny fucker” if that paints the picture)
      -Shot sketches during work hours
-Went to salon later in the video. Looked around checking the area before saying “ok good. So I have black people hair. She’s going to make me white again”. I think he just meant his hair is kinda wavy but I’m not even sure what he meant.
I remember him talking about it a bunch growing up, and it always felt like he told it as a “poor me” kinda story. Maybe that’s just how I remember it though. I understand a lot of these things were jokes for the audience but this was at a work place. If I were even seen on my phone at a job I’d be throughly reprimanded. Plus I just kept thinking ,”why would you post this”.

My parents did their best to keep me away from inappropriate shit like Shane dawson. When they saw I watched it, they explained why it was bad and monitored what i watched when they could. But they both worked a lot. I found ways around it. Kids are curious and like to feel rebellious. They'll find a way. So I'm more concerned that the creator is responsible.

RUclips does not appear to have thorough policies & procedures for moderating content. If it had robust safeguarding policies regarding content published on the site in the T&Cs (I've not read them recently) it would be like admitting that it has some degree of responsibility for the consequences of enabling content on the platform to be shared... and employing human moderators or developing algorithms to automatically flag questionable content - most of which would probably need reviewing by a person anyway - costs money.

This! I’m a video editor, it’s my job. Even a video that’s a minute long I can spend a week or more working on, tweaking and cutting literally singular frames out. It’s to the point that I can memorize time stamps to a certain extent. Shane would have had HOURS and HOURS to reflect. How many times I watch a video and after seeing it 30 times go “ya know what let’s change this.” He had all the time to understand.

PJ Broke But in that context it’s stylized in a way to not make the viewer think “oh that’s his video editing software,” it’s meant to be blended into his content to appear as another shot of footage. But do keep in mind this isn’t a matter of asking Shane to do this type of editing technique, because that’s not what this about. It’s about how LONG it takes to edit a single video, and how much time he would have had to reflect at SOME point. It’s that he would have had many chances to realize “oh shit this is kinda fucked up and wrong” because he would be seeing his footage over and over and over.

Imagine that you’re an author, and you write an erotic book. Which is fine and dandy, erotica is all in good fun! You get it published, but then find out that bookstores have been putting it in the children’s section next to Peter Rabbit and what have you. And it’s actually popular with kids. You then have a choice of either writing a sequel and letting it go right on to the children’s section for profit, or doing literally anything else. Shane chose option number one. This isn’t a case of unmonitored children getting into things targeted at adults and adults only, in which case the content creator doesn’t bear any responsibility.

While I think that parent should keep an eye on what their kids are doing online, that doesn't mean that they should (or should have to) monitor every minute. There's a difference between teaching your kid how to deal with the online world and just stalking everything they do.
Because if they feel like they can't do anything in private they will stop talking to their parents and find way to watch things anyway.
Also it's kinda weird to think that every parent is either around their kids 24/7 or that kids won't have internet access when their parents aren't around (of course this depends on the age of the kids) because 1. people have to work and not everyone ca be a stay at home parent and 2. a lot of work, school and social interaction is online nowadays.
Also there is definitely a difference between a kid stumbling over something targeted towards adults that they shouldn't see and content literally targeting and grooming kids?

I think the only true red flags that you can count on for parents to catch is sexualised content, racism, and swearing.

As a result, I became extremely intrigued by this channel and would find ways to access it when my parents weren't around. Telling a child something is taboo most definitely makes said taboo thing very alluring. They can and will find a way to explore it. Like, parents should be able to let their kids roam freely on RUclips because Shane Dawson (and others like him) shouldn’t be making adult content for kids. There’s really no other way to slice it. I totally see your point. But. As a teacher of younger children, I see so many young kids with unfettered access to the internet, which is just not safe. There’s a huge difference between your kids managing to see a few things they shouldn’t when you didn’t catch them, and just giving them their own tablet with no restrictions or supervision. There’s a huge difference between a kid seeing a few things they shouldn’t and a kid consistently consuming huge amounts of inappropriate content.
To be clear, though, yours and korviday’s point that putting it ALL on the parent, and none on the creator, is ridiculous, is completely, completely accurate. Creators HAVE to actually be responsible about their content.

You’re making fair points and although I’m not entirely disagreeing, I want to say, imo, even though with you (and many other kids) the limitations your parents set up for you and your safety were in vain in that case, they did what they could as parents.
I do think it’s parents’ responsibility to set boundaries and try their best to block harmful content and/or any harmful stuff, even though their power is limited in the end.
If a kid decides to want to start smoking, I’d expect responsible parents to forbid it to their child, not allowing this around them or with anyone else and/or throwing away their bought cigarettes whenever they can. Then they did all they could as parents to raise their kids properly in this example, truly taking care of them to their benefits and whether they’re successful or not at parenting in the end, they succeeded as parents. And I’m saying this as a mother.
But the responsibility definitely also lies on other people as well, I agree on that. Content creators need to think about how their content affects others, especially easily influenced kids/minors. And about youtube, I’ve watched another RUclips video, which also points out RUclips’s responsibility, but getting to the point, that RUclips comfortably rests on the self-claimed “fact”, that it’s just a platform, the responsibility about the content relies with creators, not with RUclips. They only set out “the rules” (for lack of a better word, forgot what it’s called... “guidelines”, maybe? 🤔 ), without any help or suggestions to the creators, otherwise they’d not be “only a platform”.
Quite irresponsible, for my taste. But what can you do.. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@Palidor I strongly disagree. This woman has the right to withhold that information until she is comfortable, because it truly is no one else's business. As a trans man, the harsh reality of being trans is this: if I go on a first date with someone and reveal that I am trans, the most common result is confusion or discomfort, both for myself and the other party involved. The worst case, which is more common than we want to admit, is assault, harassment, bigoted phobia, and much more gruesome realities. Yes, we do sometimes face acceptance, but that is rare. And who is to say that we out ourselves on a first date, the date does not work out, and then we are back to square one with a new potential partner and another instance of trying to judge if it is safe or not to come out. This is why trans people have the right to not blatantly tell the people they date this fact immediately. There is no real perfect time to tell someone you're trans, because at any stage, you are the target for harassment. We are not in a society where we are safe. Our gender has no baring on who we are around, whether that be romantic dating partners or otherwise. We do not have to sacrifice our comfort and safety to tell others what our gender is.

I found you through the Shane video and proceeded to watch a ton of your content (Commercially Viable is constantly in my head now) but I wanted to ask real quick so that when recommending your vids to people I get it right: what pronouns do you prefer/use? I have been using they/them to refer to you but I'm more than willing to adjust if you'd rather use another pronoun :)
(Also I really love your takes on accountability and responsibility regarding what content you put out when you're a creator. I've been struggling (I write) to make my characters less problematic with their flaws because lots of their character traits are all well and good...but the implications caused by the traits mingling aren't great (ex. a s*xual abuse survivor is a gogo dancer by night and some of her mannerisms are sort of problematic, etc.) I'm trying to be realistic without being harmful and it's a tricky balance. And bc it's tricky it's also hard to describe why I'm struggling to do so.)

Sorry, you probably meant the latter half to be aimed at korviday, but I just wanted to say that there are places where it's totally fine to have characters with problematic flaws? Especially if you're not trying to market it towards kids and intend to treat the situation with care, which would provide it context and impact on the story. There are also people who write much more problematic things as catharsis or processing emotions/traumas, and fiction is good for that BECAUSE it's as safe a place as it can be for such things. What's most important I think is tagging and placing it properly, or if that's not possible, ensuring to the best of your ability children too young to understand nuances do not access it.

Finn Swan Bella never drives a motorcycle off a cliff in the books or the movies. In New Moon, she goes cliff diving for the adrenaline (because it allows her to remember Edward via hallucinations), but she miscalculates the risk and Jacob has to rescue her from the turbulent waters. Alice can’t see Jacob, because he’s a werewolf, so she only sees Bella jumping off a cliff, and she assumes that Bella was committing suicide.
However, suicide is still present - when Edward finds out about Alice’s vision and believes that Bella committed suicide, he goes to Volterra to get the Volturi to kill him.

In my opinion, Shane Dawson needs to make a proper apology. He needs to acknowledge all the accusations and admit to them. Then he needs to explain that he knows what he did was wrong (without excuses) and apologise sincerely. Then I'd suggest he donates a sum of money to a charity that works to fight child abuse. Then I think he should retire and stop earning money from his content.
If you think this is harsh, take into consideration how rich Shane is. He could definitely live comfortably for the rest of his life without income from his content, even if he did donate a lot of money.

Not about Shane Dawson but I’ve been very uncomfortable calling out other youtubers because I’ve been attacked by their stans. At one point I criticized Contrapoints for her behavior in the past and I was attacked all the while being told that “they weren’t trying to speak over me” or telling me how sad it was that she was drinking as if it was my fault because I left a comment. She never even tried to reign in her fans once. It left a bad taste in my mouth.
It was a mess but I think to many viewers, they see creators as friends or at least people they can trust. And when they feel like anyone is attacking someone they trust they lash out even though they don’t know the person. On top of that some people pledge money to these guys so they feel a connection to them that way.
Honestly I think this culture is toxic and I can’t act like I haven’t been like this at one point bc I was, but over the years I had to disassociate myself from content creators. They’re there to entertain me, that’s it. They’re not my friends, they’re not anyone I can trust, they’re just people in front of a camera. Once you start doing that it’s pretty easy to unsubscribe pull your patreon money and move on with your life.
I think Shane’s fans felt a connection to him and kind of romanticized a story of an edgelord becoming a sensitive boi. It was hard for me before to criticize him because his fanbase would literally attack people up until a few months ago when people were finally open to criticism. I’m rambling but I really do hate internet culture. Like the creator but when they mess up you have to hold them accountable not defend their honor because you like a few videos.

I'm a Contrapoints fan, but I agree that some fans have become overprotective of her. I've seen people constructively criticize her content in good faith and they'd be accused of trying to cancel her, and then they'd be harassed and canceled (ironic). It's not the responsibility of the creator about how their fans act. But from an optics point of view, the negative behavior of fans gives the creator a bad reputation. If you're being harassed by fans of someone, it's going to affect how you view that creator, even if it doesn't logically make sense to judge a creator based on that. That's just how the human brain works I guess.

Re: "parents should pay attention," I feel like another thing about that rhetoric is that it decentralizes the responsibility, like RUclips or Shane Dawson himself could moderate the content that kids are seeing and that would be one central figure in charge of the moderation, whereas there's no way of knowing whether every single parent is going to pay attention. There are a lot of parents who don't really care about their kids, and there are a lot of parents who probably do care but just don't have the time/energy/ability to moderate their kids' content consumption. But RUclips does have the resources to hire more moderators and structure their site in a way that's better for kids, and if they do that then there's no need to place responsibility on millions of individuals as opposed to one centralized figure.

As a parent of children that just got their own iPhones, I find your content SO refreshing. You are 100% correct that it’s near impossible to monitor children 24/7/365. Thankfully, I have an open dialogue with my children about what they watch, especially as a former criminal defense attorney that has seen exactly how adults abuse video games and social media to prey upon the young. I think one thing to take into account, however, is the constitutional aspect of free speech and how social media platforms have been granted immunity from lawsuits for content as mere “platforms” for others. I hate how that has been turned inside out to allow predators and others with hateful views to speak to such a wide audience. Hopefully with the election in November, we’ll see some legislation that holds platforms accountable for their content. In the meantime, I am BEYOND grateful for people like you who monitor and police these platforms for inappropriate content. I’m not one to say that the internet should be completely sanitized, there is a space for content aimed at adults, but that shift has always been questionable to me and I rarely hear that mentioned.

If he were to actually apologise (and not just go “I’m sorry you were offended”) for all the racist shit he’s done he’d lose his entire alt right audience, and he doesn’t want to do that. I stopped watching him since 2016 but I have a younger sibling who is a minor that kept watching him. Fds crl I mention him in particular because he is just bad at taking accountability for his actions. When he paid those guys to hold that sign was a complete non apology. He framed all the criticism as “the media” having some kind of vendetta against RUclipsrs and now his fans (probably mostly younger fans) just use that excuse to counter even the mildest criticism. His attempts to address the bigoted people in his audience have been weak at best.

I agree, ultimately the creator is responsible for their content, however, creators can only reach their large audiences easily with the continued willingness of platforms like RUclips.
Imo content sharing platforms should also be held accountable when they fail to implement robust moderation protocols & procedures that prevent creators distributing inappropriate material, particularly if they fail repeatedly. But we know why they either don't have such policies, or don't implement them, & why they're unlikely to pull popular content regardless of how inappropriate it it is - $£€¥£€$

Laura M I disagree. When Shane was making the ped0philic content, he knew (and has stated) that his audience at the time was primarily children. I agree with you that parents should have monitored what their kids watch but to say that Shane didn’t make content knowing it was mostly children who’d be watching it wrong.

Laura M he didn’t have to say it. You don’t necessarily “choose” your audience but he knew from analytics that his audience was mostly young kids, and also every live appearance he made, and the fans videos he was sent wearing his merch, and all the young Omegle fans he interacted with. I don’t enjoy those videos as an adult, or that humor. You can make the argument that he didn’t do it on purpose but he KNEW the age range of his audience and it has been established multiple times through his own words and actions. Also, he has such a massive online library that asking someone to dig one example up to show you is ridiculous. Plenty of other people have made videos with examples, find one yourself.

@@LadyoftheFlwrs If you haven't watched D' Angelo's video on Shane Dawson, I highly recommend that you do but I'll link the part where you're asking when Shane admits he knows his audience is mostly young (he gives multiple examples but this is the one that sticks out the most to me).
      ruclips.net/video/x2WBythSGoQ/видео.html
As he states verbatim in a 2015 podcast, "As a RUclipsr, the only pussy that's thrown my way is 12"
Also, you'd never see Walking Dead tell a 12 year old to twerk and send sexy pictures to the creator. I really don't think it's fair to compare the two. It seems like you're excusing Shane's content? Even IF it was made for adults, he has had young children on his channel do sexually explicit things and other horrifying stuff. It's inexcusable either way.

    • @rambunctiousraptor
      @rambunctiousraptor 4 года назад +9

Laura M also if he was making content for adults, why did it feature little kids so much? Most adults are not interested in an R rated puppet show about a little girl. And once he established that his contact was attracting kids and adults weren’t interested (btw, 15-16 y/os shouldn’t have been watching that content either and are just as vulnerable to grooming), the burden of responsibility should have fallen to him to not put out content that literally glorified pedophilia and bestiality/featured graphic sexual content. Kids love markiplier too but the worst you get from him is pg-13 language and suggestive scenes. Shane knew he had preteens drooling all over him, and I’m sure at the time they really loved hearing him talk about sex with minors. Most adults find that pretty repulsive.

@@LadyoftheFlwrs we live in a different world than when grooming was initially defined. Shane reached thousands of girls and subsequently DID have inappropriate contact with them on several occasions (swapping gum, inappropriate comments about their photos, asking them to twerk). No one wants him to kill himself, we want him to stop having a platform that allows him to reach young people and out out harmful content. We want accountability and admission to the harm he caused on a whole generation of young viewers. We want to set an example so that it doesn't happen again.

I think a child watching Shane's old content on the internet is worse then a child watching South Park on TV. Both are inappropriate for children but with TV at least there is this barrier between show and viewer, while RUclips videos are much more personal and intimate. A kid watching South Park doesn't form a strong connection to Cartman, but a kid watching Shane Dawson can form a strong connection to Shane Dawson. It feels more real and so the child takes what Shane says more seriously, not as jokes or satire. That is dangerous.

I really like your vids and your takes on all this situation, I'm really glad that you're putting it out there and that you're getting your point across. Only thing I'd like to add to this situation, as someone who's studying to be a teacher and learned about the impact of the Internet on children (and how it reflects on real life), I think it's both things at the same time. Parents should be more careful of what kids see on the internet, because there is mature content here made for adults that children shouldn't be seeing (that isn't necessarily Bad, but sill), but they shouldn't be completely cut off from the internet. That'd be unfair to them. There is a lot that kids can learn on the internet, but it's important to do so safely. Still, creators like Shane Dawson and other pr*dators should be deplataformed, because they are making sick content Targetted to kids that directly affects kids negatively. In this case, they are totally responsible for the effects it had on these children and should be held accountable.

"It's the parents' job to stop online grooming"
Okay that comes from a privileged point of view. It's like you said. Not everyone has parents. Not everyone has parents who pay attention. Who can afford to pay attention to everything their child consumes because they work to provide food/shelter or whatever. Not everyone has parents who treat their kids well and act in the child's best interest.
Furthermore, this encourages authoritarian parenting by just simply taking away devices or constantly invading the child's privacy. This has been shown to have many detrimental effects on the parent-child bond and the child's mental health later in life.
Parents should take a role if they can and open lines of communication but it shouldn't be on them.

I am weary of moderation in general, but I do think that youtube should at least moderate content that's advertised towards children. The thing is that automated systems would likely be innefficient in sorting through the various subtle and complicated ways some content is unsuitable for children, but with the volume of videos uplouded every single day I don't think youtube would be willing to hire real people for the job, even if they subcontract them. It would also make it so there's less advertising-friendly videos for children and less money for the platform. That is depressing. Really liked the ending song though

“Look at me using parasocial relationships to dunk on you” so good. I don’t know if it matters to you, but I tend to use they if a persons gender bends any social lines, which means I use they in regards to myself even though I’m biologically and present feminine. I use they in regards to straight men and women who I know personally, and I’ve been questioning myself on using a non descriptive term of gender when on platforms that aren’t personal in my real life towards or in regards to people’s Appearance. Is it bothersome? Am I treading too lightly or too harshly on other people based off my own experience and ideas with gender? I’m sorry for kinda high jacking this comment into my own thoughts but if anyone has any personal input they feel comfortable sharing especially being referred to as “they” or “them” when it doesn’t linguistically require it and they feel comfortable and representive of one side of the gender spectrum? Is it jarring or comfortable? Does intent to lay an open groundwork for them to make their own gender whatever it needs to be for the other person matter even if someone is very masculine or feminine? I’m more opening this towards the audience as well, but I think it would be interesting if anyone is comfortable sharing their own experiences or conflicting viewpoints (in a rational conversation please be a nice human if anyone decides to actually write back to each other, creators, and myself). *your gender expression and everything else is yours to share just ignore this if sharing it with a complete stranger would violate your own personal interests

I feel like a lot of the people preaching "it's the parent's fault for not moderating what the kids were watching" probably *didn't* have their parents watching their online use. Where is the line? When does "I'm making sure you aren't watching anything dangerous" become just an invasion of privacy? My dad had a software that let him, at any time, pull up my screen on his own computer and watch my keystrokes. My mom trusted me to use the internet responsibly but also worked a lot, but she would regularly ask me if there were any "funny videos" I could show her so she could gauge the type of content I was watching. I still watched shit she didn't know about. Now, they got lucky. I was what most adults would call a "good kid" and my mom's lax rules were perfectly fine for me, and the aggressive tactic my dad had only built distrust and resentment. I don't know what the right answer is, I don't know if there is one, especially with how quickly the internet evolves. But, there is no way for a parent to be everywhere, and from personal experience, they shouldn't be.

In reference to parental responsibility. Have we forgotten that for most of human civilization it was not just the job of parents but of the community to raise children? A. Parents cannot be watching their kids all the time. They have other roles such as providing. B. What of the kids that don’t have responsible parents? We can take this same logic to its absurd extreme. Child sex traffickers should have no accountability because it is the parents job to protect. Schools should allow any adult to pick a kid up from school because it’s the parents job to make sure their kid is protected. Parents share responsibility but it’s also all of our responsibility to protect them. And ultimately it’s the perpetrar of harms responsibility to not harm children.

the problem is, 500 hours of video are uploaded to RUclips every minute. 1 billion hours of content are watched every day. it would be impossible to moderate by humans. and we already have automatic.. sort of AI, that demonetises things automatically. which is why people have to use code, they make the title with 'suic1de' for example. when talking about that, or eating disorder personal stories, drug abuse recovery etc. making this even more restrictive would make it difficult to create important content.
plus, a video can be titled innocently, and have inappropriate content. the AI also picks up on this some of the time and demonitises or de lists it. but it doesnt work like a human brain, we dont have that tech yet that can pick up on parody or irony. if you make a video about the dangers of fascism, the AI cant tell the difference between that and a video promoting fascism. it just sees 'bad' key words. it cant 'see'whats happening on the screen. you have to report stuff like that where you see it.
of course, when things are promoted by youtube it is different. the people invited to the events and on the front page / top of the algorithms and the ones rising fast should be monitored hard. but, the difficulty is the T&C's that are made to help can end up being harmful to other content creators, you have to be careful with the legal wording so it isnt restrictive. we have so much freedom on this platform which is good, and even television which is the opposite, had predators like jimmy saville literally using his show?position to groom and rape children
i really respect content creators like this, we have a really good community of conscious consumers and creators that bring attention to malicious people
