  • On November 7, 2009, Zenyatta became the first female to win the Grade I Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park. She carried 123 lbs and won by 1 length over Gio Ponti. She earned $2,700,000 of the $5,000,000 purse. She became the first horse to win two different Breeders' Cup races, improving her winning record to 14 out of 14.[4] The field of 12 horses she triumphed over included 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and 2009 Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird, as well as European Group 1 winners Twice over and Rip Van Winkle, and Pacific Classic winner Richard's Kid. The runner-up, Gio Ponti, was the brilliant winner of four Grade 1 Stakes in 2009 including the Arlington Million, and went on to be named Champion Older Male and Champion Grass horse. Zenyatta finished the 1¼ miles in 2:00.62 and surpassed the 2002 "Horse of the Year" Azeri in North American female earnings. Azeri, who retired in 2004, accumulated earnings in excess of $4,079,820.

Watching Zenyatta weave through the middle of the pack like that sent chills up my spine. She made over taking the leaders look absolutely effortless. I'll always be a Zenyatta fan.

It's funny how the champions (in most everything), have a name that makes their triumph that much more special.Every time I watch this, I get goosebumps listening to the announcer "ZENYATTA ZENYATTTTTAAA ZEN - YA - TTTTAA"........awesome stuff.

Yeah it seems like it's that way with a lot of sports. Examples: you have Tiger Woods for golf. Cool name. You have Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain & Michael Jordan for basketball. Just something cool about those names. And you have Bjorn Borg & Roger Federer for tennis. Muhammad Ali & Mike Tyson for boxing. Ussain Bolt for running. Just imagine if any of those names that I just mentioned were Joe Smith or Bill Davis. Just wouldn't have the same tone to it. Part of the champion is the name.

Somehow true... just think of Ruffian, Eclipse, Seabiscuit or Secretariat. 'Normal' racehorses have names like Mind That Bird, Regal Ransom or Colonel John. What would you scream out if Colonel John won the Breeder's Cup for example? It's a lot easier to try that with ZEN-Ya-Ttaaa, RUFFiaaan or Sea-Bis-CUIIIT, if you understand what I mean with that.
    Special names for special horses.

Had all the stars aligned, she could have won three Breeders Cup Classics. On her ninth race, instead of running in the Ladies Classic, I think she was good enough to beat the boys in the Classic. And in 2010, with better foresight (For a horse that's always at the back of the pack, her camp didn't expect dirt on her face?) and planning (run her outside throughout the race to avoid dirt and traffic). She'd probably beat Blame.

Honestly Mike Smith rode her poorly every time. He was lucky that pace makers was not in most of her races he would of caused her to lose more. That's why Blame beat her.
