This is one of those fantastic videos that can really help DIYers to make a repair on their own instead of paying an unbelievable amount to a contractor. Very nicely done, sir!
Except I googled this style of opener and can't find it's like anywhere online in America 😂

Hi James, Broken old window wrapping mechanism replacement successful. Similar window wrappers are also available here. Last year, I repaired a window in my mother's house in a similar way. you did a good job. Thank you for showing the details. take care. see you buddy. Cheers James.
Found this through notice of your workshop tour! I have never seen a fixing like this and I wish those flyscreens were around here! I live surrounded by trees and everything with wings tries to get in! Some good tips - I have used matches and bamboo skewers for a long time, people used to use wire wool compacted in - till the rust appeared! That was long ago! I wish I had the screwdriver ability on my Black and Decker drill, forward and reverse - it is decades old though but still a great workhorse! I have arthritic hands but I you can adapt a screwdriver to be turned by a wrench or a brace and bit - the brace and bit may be before your time James! :-) Best wishes, Eryk 🎬👍🔨👍🔨
Believe it or not I have a brace and bit hiding in the workshop somewhere! Needs a restore though, all jammed up. Yes I thought these sort of winders would be universal but looking for them to link to overseas it looks like they may be an Australian thing as I have not seen their like anywhere else :P
I went to try to find Amazon links in the UK, USA and Canada... Nothing, nilch, nada similar. Checked home depot, nope. Looks like it's a weird Aussie invention 😂
You guys have Bunnings yeah? It was odd. I went looking for these in the UK and US markets to provide links and... nadda. Zilch. Im wondering if these are an Aussie invention?!
1972 this building was put up. I don't they've been installed new since the 80's but there are enough of them around Bunnings does a fair trade in replacements ;)
I was never a fan of those hopper wind outs. You fixed it good! P.S, my garage / workshop is almost done. Setting up the dust extractor so i will be able to get a few things done! Cheers
Nice! There is a new little dusty Carbatec are releasing soon then I can upgrade the shop vac. I think I am up to 7 of these winders replaced in the past year or two. I just realised the one I replaced in the video is NOT one of the orginals from the 70s, they were much smaller units, so this window has already been fixed at least once before. Being strata, often renters just dont complain, so there could be a dozen more that need attention I don't know about to fix yet! 😅
@@pajaro685 Yes, I am the Strata handyman/building manager and get paid for these little jobs once they are brought to my attention. This unit has just been fully renovated by the owner so they picked up a number of small jobs for the Strata to fix at the same time. It's a good system. I make some pocket money and the Owners Corp saves about 50% on small repair jobs as I don't charge call-out for walking up the stairs from my workshop 😁
Asking for a friend? ;) hehehe The good news is most of these locks are very generic. If you have multiple units of the same brand, the keys should be the same. If it's the only one, sadly buying a new unit is probably cheaper than getting a locksmith out. If they still sell the same model at your local hardware store, they might be able to either sell or cut you a key to match. Best of luck!
Not the FixItFingers video I expected to watch today. The winders on the new house are caked in paint from the previous owners, so more than a couple need replacing 😂
Hahaha glad I've actually come in handy Paul 😁 These DIY videos do terribly when I publish them, but usually outshine my woodwork videos massively over time
Sounds like the gear inside is worn out. You'll need to unscrew it from the frame. After that the chain should release allowing you to unscrew it from the window. If the frame screws are those nasty security ones that don't come out easily, you might have to drill out the heads. Good luck!
@@MrGeoffreySmith Oh i know, just my deadpan humour. 😉These videos always feel a bit weird to publish as they are not targeted at my actual subscribers but tend to do well in the long term.
@@FixitFingers I like them all. I have no idea who watches my videos as only 2% of my subscribers watch them. The more subs I get the less views I get, so who knows!
@@MrGeoffreySmith yeah that's the great conundrum. My 'popular' videos are ones that people watch with a specific purpose, like (hopefully) this one and tool reviews. Folks may subscribe if they like them, but they will never watch another video as their need for me has ended 🤣

That's interesting you have this style in Turkey. I couldn't see them in the UK or US stores and thought they were a weird Australian thing 😁
@@FixitFingers 👏👏👏No mate. They have similar. not the same. :-)
Excellent! The "Fixit" in your "Fingers" did a fine job!
I need to convince the tax office I'm a legitimate business sometimes 😂
Nice one! I like the skewer trick, done that one a few times myself.
Yeah, I just need some M8 skewers.. those M6 ones are a bit small usually 😂
@@FixitFingers If I have the stuff handy, I like drilling out the stripped hole to 1/4" and gluing in a 1/4" dowel.
great quick fix James. handy to have as a reference
I think your place may be a little modern for this style of opener 😁

I have never seen that chain looking thing, that is cool!

@@FixitFingers haha ya, but I love it
No flys on you mate, handy little tip especially with the skewers 🍻👍
Well once I got the screen re-installed at least... ;) Cheers Sumo!
I've got some window maintenance jobs that need sorting to be fair, 1950s timber house, always a job to do!
You guys have Bunnings yeah? It was odd. I went looking for these in the UK and US markets to provide links and... nadda. Zilch. Im wondering if these are an Aussie invention?!
I really need you to maintain my building also 🙂🙂🙂
Sure, send your plane over and I'll bring my tools... 🤣
Crikey mate, I havent seen those hinges since I was at school!

@@FixitFingers They are easy to replace, as you showed. Does Strata pay for it or the owners?

When can you come down and do mine? Lots of great tips.
Hopefully soon mate, we can visit the big green shed and knock them all over 😁
Thank you, that was extremely helpful
You're welcome Susie. An pretty easy job that fixes one of those annoying things we often put up with for far too long 😄
How do you open the window if you've misplaced the key? 🤔

Easy as, nice and quick.
Cheers mate 👍🏽
Gotta pay the workshop bills for the next project 😂
Nice video mate 👍
Just a little quickie 😉
I really want to clean/refurbished mine.
Shouldn't be too hard as long as none of the parts are broken. All it should need is some grease and a scrub!
@FixitFingers Sounds too easy.
Thank you.
How do you replace one that won't wind out at all? We have two where they won't wind out?

@@FixitFingers thank you for the information we will do that. Appreciate you replying back.
@@jared2178 no worries, let me know if you hit any issues. Send me a pic via Insta or Facebook if you get stuck 👌
@@FixitFingers will do, a trip to Bunnings this week is on the cards.
Fantastic, thanks.
No worries mate, glad it was useful.
Use dowling to gill holes its much better if theyre bigger
Good tip! Yes I do this on bigger holes with dowels, drill them out, tap it in. Works really well.
Very interesting
Plenty more you can come to fix Angus 😎
is good. i like.
Comes in black. Works on coffin shaped windows. 💀
They didnt have any mission brown ones ? Lol the colour of the 70's and 80's ! Oh well at least the frame will be white to match.
Believe it or not, they do! 😁 This window will be painted white soon so the owner requested a white one ;)
Stop winding me up 🤣
Sorry Geoff but these boring videos tend to pay the bills a lot better than actual projects so I need to sprinkle them in every so often 😂
@@FixitFingers The 'winding me up' was sarcasm, by the way, as in the mechanism 😀😀

Do you paint houses by any chance….😂😂👍👍🏁
I'm painting hand rails at the moment... Not done a full house. Do you take amateur hour specials 😉
🥰🥰🥰
I do love handyman jobs too ;)
