@@dochollywood79 yup. Now that we know why it's even more obvious when we watch it again. @@325133 No, it was one of a kind. it was a 145 year old martin guitar that was considered priceless and loaned to tarantino by a museum. it was supposed to be swapped with a prop before getting smashed. Nobody told kurt russell that so he smashed it thinking it was the prop one, meaning jennifer jason leigh's reaction to it is genuine. its alot different to hear the song knowing its the last the guitar will ever play
actually the museum that loaned it to the film crew attempted just that. they meticulously gathered as many pieces as they could and attempted a very tedious repair job. Unfortunately, in the end, it was too destroyed to be able to be repaired. The guitar was valued at about $400k, but the insurance only covered the initial $45k purchase price.
No, it was really a replica, they just made all that up about smashing priceless guitar for publicity. Jennifer Jason Leigh really does get hanged in the movie though. Have you seen her around recently? I haven't.
That guitar actually was an antique and he wasn’t supposed to break it, you can hear her say who Kurt who then look at the director when he does it lol
Since she’s cuffed to John Ruth for nearly the entire film.. she should have sang “I’ll be your Mirror” from Georgia!! The guitar might have lived a few more decades...but no ..this song doomed them both!!
Whats crazy is they'd rented that guitar from a museum and it was worth over $100k. They had a prop one that John Ruth was supposed to break, but he didnt know that the one that she had was the REAL one. Thats why Daisy has the reaction she does when she realizes that John is about to break the guitar and after he breaks it. They kept that shot in the movie too lol
Day and night in irons clad we like poor galley slaves Will toil and toil our lives away to fill dishonored graves But by and by I'll slip m' chains and to the bush I'll go And I'll join the brave bushrangers there, Jack Donahue and Co. And some dark night all is right and quiet in the town, I'll get the bastards one and all, I'll gun the floggers down. I found a hole in tarantino's plot. Why would the outlaws set up that dumb trap, when they could have just ambushed the bountyhunter directly or the brit boy could have shot him right in the horsewagon.
This song is about the convicts being shipped to Botany Bay in Nsw Australia. They where Slave labor. Pretty horrid existence. A small chunk of white Australians are their descendants, until the free- settlers came over. Being a convict was down right rough. Lots of them became bushrsngers ( Australian bandits)
Really feel bad for the guitar, it was a Martin original from 1880. You can see the reaction is like "ok whoa guys can we call a time out on production this is fucked" which is totally stupid writing. I love how Quentin kept daisy's not in character reaction to the guitar smash in the final cut.
Yeah, pity about the rare antique guitar.
Martin Guitar Museum didn't love that much as you did.
I never knew that about the guitar but I always thought that her reaction was kind of weird in the movie now I know why

"And you'll be dead, behind me John, when I get to Mexico" is my favorite line even though Samuel Jackson is in this movie

I could watch this movie forever, since each minute is umpredictable and characters are all guilty of something
The fourth verse is the darkest, but the final fifth verse has the most chilling message.

And thus ended the life of a priceless guitar...
Every time I see this it hurts

40,000
Hearing that guitar sing it last song and be immortalized like this rather than sit on a shelf for eternity actually worth it.

And that's the story how Kurt Russel broke a 200 000$ classic guitar.
and guitar made in 1870s
40,000 dollar guitar
That was the insurance value
The guitar was valued at $400,000. But the guitar was only insured for $45,000.
Real question is why was a half a million guitar on the set.
Turn speed to 0.25 and you can see the exact moment where 400.000$ explode to 1000 pieces
You would be a fool to take anything of value onto a film set or let anyone borrow or hire anything you own for a movie to TV show.
The look of OH CRAP was real ..

U know i think Tarantino knew that was the real one and let it happen anyway to keep the shock value.
This is why Kurt Russel is immediately killed in the next scene, unfortunately the museum still wasn't satisfied.
