Quick note: those aren't skunk stripes made to put truss rods into, they're just pieces of Walnut for added rigidity (and I would assume to lower the cost of production, as getting a wide 8 string neck in a single maple piece would be pretty difficult)
It's almost entirely structural. The advantage of multi-piece, laminate necks like this is that the grain of each piece can be placed in opposite directions in an effort to prevent twisting.
A lot of companies do this on their regular 6-strings so the fact that it helps make the neck blanks wider is almost certainly a happy side effect they are all too eager to take advantage of financially.
@@Schwig Ibanez themselves is one of the companies that also do this in their six-string guitars. Older RG necks were built with scarf joints like Les Pauls, and in my area they were just as likely to have a broken headstock. With a multipart neck, allegedly the glue joints are even stronger than the grain, which helps with rigidity, they have extra room for a volute so they look like there's more work on them, the wood pieces are smaller so they're cheaper... they have a lot of pros on them. Cons, not so much. Maybe that pre-building the neck blank is extra work?
Walnut doesn’t add rigidity (although it does help to prevent twisting, as noted by other comments). Maple has a higher modulus of elasticity than walnut.
Wide Maple isn’t the issue. Laminated necks are stiffer. Full stop. It would be foolish to build a one piece maple neck.
It generally costs more to do a laminate neck because its a significant additional step, at least until they can teach a robot to glue and clamp stuff. The cheapest neck is usually 2 pieces, one for the neck itself and then a scarf joint attaching the headstock. This is an actual structural choice to help make a better guitar.
Its super easy to get maple in widths more than 2.5"! Maple trees are huge.
I wish I knew of Meshuggah when I got my 8 string. My stupid ass didn't know them that well and was into Animals As Leaders.
Suffice to say I learned that having an 8 string does not make me Tosin Abasi
(This isn't to say Meshuggah isn't hard but definitely more approachable than Animals As Leaders lol)
Neck construction (1-3-5-7-9 piece) has nothing to do with truss rods or the amount of truss rods more pieces mean more rigidity
3rd channel incoming? Eightstringtv is on the horizon.
He’s probably already reserved the username in advance! 😂🤘🏻🎸
Should be sixstringplustv
Every Ibanez guitar I've ever seen has 2 stripes on the back of the neck. Great review and I like your demo song!
5:40 ish you actually need to do one string to two string size pickups longer for multi scale in order to compensate for the slanted pickups. Them using a 9 string pickup on this 8 was actually to make sure all strings are covered, otherwise you’d actually have very little / no coverage over your strings with a typical 8, Fishman will actually tell you on their site to order a size up for fanned fret guitars.
I did hear a difference between the two voicings, when pushed down it sounds a lot gainier and more centered in the midrange in a way that I noticed, and voice 2 is tighter and has more harmonic character. Either way it sounds good! I have experience with Fishmans on 8s and it sounds so good :D
If by "a lot" you mean "barely" then I'm with you. There was a bigger difference when recorded than there was in the room, that's for sure.
But still barely anything, especially not noticeable in a mix. Regardless, great guitar
@@sevenstringtv I guess in the mix the differences will diminish, but even placebo is nice if nothing's effected badly because of it :D
Sorry for being a gear nerd, but the wood on the maple neck is walnut and helps with stability, the fretboard is so light and rosewood looking because it is macassar ebony which typically has a lot more wood grain than regular ebony and the frets are as far as i know not stainless steel but probably just really nicely polished. :^)
the thing is you can drop in 4ths instantly buy hopping string pairing as opposed to repositioning, making several chordal shifts faster
Is common practice to add a bigger pickup on multi-scale guitars as it guarantees all strings are within the poles (the fanning-angle will mess up the positioning of the strings in a standard pickup) It's not purely aesthetic in this case
Those stripes on the neck aren't skunk stripes, they're the walnut layers of the 5 piece neck. If they were skunk stripes, they would not extend all the way to the end of the headstock, but stop somewhere before the nut. Considering it has a single spoke wheel, I don't think the neck has 2 truss rods either, which is surprising because 8 strings.
Good catch!
I have two 8-strings - neither have two independently adjustable truss rods
@@DanielBobkeI've owned a couple 8 strings, Ibanez ones and a Skervesen. None of those have had 2 truss rods - that's honestly something you'll only see on "lower tier" brands like legator or agile.
@@Nibblerr Yeah... I have never seen it myself.
@@DanielBobke Maybe it's just 9 strings then, I found at least 2 Ibanez 9 string models that had 2 truss rods, the RG9-BK Standard and RG9PBT. My mistake lol.
the laminates on the neck have nothing to do with the truss rod.... its just to reduce neck bowing and neck warping. the more laminates you use the less likely the neck is to warp due to heat or moisture. also the frets are not listed as stainless on the ibanez website
I’ve been trying to get this guitar for nearly 8 months and I FINALLY have one one the way. Super excited to play it. Love Ibanez, love extended guitars
Are you a fan of Black Crown Initiate? They play 8 strings. Really good stuff. Imagine a modern, American Opeth on 8 strings.
I have the 7 string Iron Label cousin to this, i fuckin love it, it plays so well, I've had my eye on this 8 string for a while 😅 That tone with the invective sounded killer, I've also been looking at that recently...
The pickups being 9 string in an 8 is due to the the multicale, its to ensure thr slanted pups cover all the strings
If you buy any of those, use my affiliate links 🫣
The Iron Label 7 string is so damn good, I sold all my other guitars once I got it
8-string guitars are kind of like 6-string basses in my view, but also kind of opposite. Bassists get 6-strings to play jazz fusion widdly-woo's in guitar territory while eschewing the low notes and guitarists get 8 to ooga booga chug in bass territory while ignoring the high strings. There are probably like 12 people who effectively use the entire range of these instruments and many more people who should just get baritone guitar or bass VI and do their backs a favor.
6 string basses are way more useful than 8 string guitars
@@-ljk-😮 I'd say it's because alot of modern 8 strings are designed nowadays is with Metal/Djent in mind while 6 string basses don't have this expectation to be super heavy.
There needs a culture/philosophy shift in order for 8 strings to be used effectively.
I've always wanted to try a guitar with the pickup switch in that position. Specifically, the EVH Ernie Ball guitar. I've been eternally disappointed that Ernie Ball stopped making Axis guitar with the switch in that position. Maybe it was an EVH trademark thing? But then Eddie has never had a guitar with Peavey nor EVH that had the pickup switch in that position. I guess Eddie decided he didn't like the pickup switch there?
I have the older MH20. There are some enthusiast mod communities working over the smaller amps, like the 8" combos, etc, but it does well enough that I really don't want to muck with it.
Now you need an 8 string acoustic. I can't afford Javier's sig but also one company offers a multiscale/fan fret Brahms guitar (8 string classical is known as a "Brahms" guitar in Orchestral environments) for like six fiddy USD that I've been trying to make space for, for a while (I ran out of guitar space, need more).
I have a couple 7 string acoustics and I really really enjoy them.
Ibanez don't usually put 2 trussrods in their 8 string guitars or 6 string basses however i belive there are some carbon reinforcement in the neck. If the neck is sufficiently stiff you wouldn't need two adjustment points for the bow of the neck
I felt the same when I bought my first 8 strings. Maybe I just like big necks with many string 🤷♂️
That opening riff sounds more like an old car trying to start than anything else, lol.
Ok
@@sevenstringtv Sorry, that's just what anything tuned lowed than C# std sounds to me....like machinery.
Some people dig it.
@@klauswigsmithahhh u mean 9 string C# standard?
@@evancoons2925 I'll be honest, I really don't know wtf I'm talking about...all I know id old school Black Sabbath is about as low as I go, and they were C# std (or drop C#, I dunno)
@@klauswigsmithno, it sounds like Meshuggah
I was going to purchase this beast because it comes in F standard, unlike other guitar companies. I ended up going with the John Browne Tao-8 instead
should you buy and play a 7 string for a while after considering an 8?
I admit I was dismissive a week and a bit ago when you posted the unboxing, that's because the only time I've ever heard an 8 string actually having the higher strings being played was just for ambiance. Today I actually heard one being used as an actual extended range guitar rather than a glorified baritone.
It's still a bit much for me, but hearing that solo was a pleasant surprise.
I've already read messages talking about the neck blah blah rigidity, but it's possibly also a styling choice. Whatever they did regarding truss rod is impressive, whether one or two.
So yeah, sorry about last week's comment
Dude good review I really like this guitar but I'm on the fence about those active pickups....
great content as always. keep it up bro!
Nice! Welcome to a new world of sonic mayhem! You're about to have some real fun. 🤘🤪👌
I guess the Peavy already came with that blue light flare. I don't know. Namastè.
Rip my man you will be missed...
8 string guitars or extended low tuned guitars are a different animal. But once you get used to them and figure out how to use them, they are really fun
Acid sweat gang checking in
I recently got a strandberg 8 and it's honestly the best guitar I've ever played. I may switch out the pickups to something hotter like Fishmans one day, but otherwise it's amazing.
why would someone who owns more than 3 or 4 guitars want a case or gig bag for *every* guitar they own? Is there ever a scenario where you need to take them all on the road at the same time? Do you people want to have to dedicate an entire garage or whatever for their stack of guitar cases? I dont get it tbh... like if youre someone who is buying a $1200+ guitar, don't you probably already have a gig bag? Tbh I kind of feel like the main purpose of a guitar case that comes with a nice guitar is just to protect it on the ride home from the guitar shop - and even then you could have just brought one there with you...
and even then when I'm getting a guitar I want ever cent of what I pay to be for the intrument itself, theres not actually such a thing as a "free gig" bag - its really just buying a guitar and a gig bag at the same time. And I know that last statement is real *real* obvious, but it really seems like people forget it with the way they act about this. ... like lets just say you want to get a guitar and a nice case given some budget, wouldn't it be nicer to seperate how much of your budget you want to give to each and then find the best options at those 2 budgets?... -- is the idea that a nice guitar should come with a case just yet another bit of guitar-player tradition that we guitarists tend to get so nigh-religious about? Am I an idiot who doesnt see something obvious? Genuinely curios for thoughts on this?
and like, if you're in a touring band and you actually need to bring all 12 of your guitars on the road with you then of course i get why youd need a case for every guitar to go in, but even in that scenario I'd think itd make way more sense to get those huge crate sized guitar cases that hold like 3 or 4 in one. ... idk. what dont i get?
Youre completely right. Its just people whining for the sake of it. This video really shows this dudes...lack of common sense/ability to look into anything. Spend 5 seconds looking into the truss rod situation and then make the video instead of just making some boldly wrong statements multiple times. Comes off foolish and makes me less likely to want to watch anything else he has to say. If hes this wrong about a simple thing that I happen to know about...what is he as wrong about that I might not know and assume hes correct?
2 truss rods... joker ;)
Love multi-piece necks like that, the walnut really adds to the look of it whilst being functional :)
You're more a man than I though sir 7 strings is enough to send me into meltdown but 8!? There's some next level stuff. Bet itd do open tuned slide nice though :)
Nice vid as ever sir n thats an awesome lookin geetar :)
Yeah yeah, egg on my face.
I forgot it had an ebony fretboard so the truss rod is inserted that way, not through the back
Worn gold always looks better than new gold
Nice nice, great playing too boss.
🫡
Nice guitar, but I would've liked it better if it had a tone knob and passives. Yeah, I know, I'm lame lmao
Like the Wendigoon cosplay btw!!
The ferrules on the back are ehhhh.
Can you take 2 strings off and fix this guitar so it is a decent 6 string? Im curious if the influx of used 7 string and 8 string guitars can be saved from the landfill.
Mate, I'd take a plastic nut from Ibanez over a Graphtech Nubone nut on a Harley Benton any day... Because the material doesn't matter when the nut was cat by a blind person with their feet, which is, unfortunately, the case on my 8-string HB. At the same time - never had issues with nuts on the Ibanez I've had over the years, even a Gio.
ok now try the touch guitars u8 ‼‼‼🔥🔥🔥
Those frets would mess me up lol
Surprisingly you get used quite fast. But doing barre or huge chords are a pain tough
i have an 8 Multi scale, and i can't tell the difference it looks like a lot but blind folded you'd never know it
It’s a 5 piece neck…. It’s not a “skunk stripe “. You can see they go thru the headstock.
lol it doesn't have two truss rods because those aren't skunk stripes. This is a 5 piece neck. Probably has carbon fiber rods unless its super cheap.
It has 9 string pickups because it’s multi scale. I had to put those in my Harley Benton 8 string.
Dude check out the album "After" by Ihsahn. definite hidden gem from 2010 made with love on an 8 string ibanez
Change the channel's name to multiple string tv
Pretty sure these are not stainless steel but nickel frets
i dont think these are SS frets btw
hammer on one time and you can tell, SS frets have that clack and the bends have zero fret traction, Its astonishing that nickel frets are still being produced nickel are inferior in EVERY way and not by a little, playinf SS frets will make every fiddle without them feel like trash.
@@johanjotun1647 goddamn bro did nickel frets steal your girl?
eightstringtv has to be happening now
I tried to get into 8 strings, but I just can’t enjoy them. If I want to go that low, I’ll just tune a 7 string lower. That being said, Drop G# is about as low as I’ll go these days.
Don't the strings just flop around that low?
@@davidledford3522 not if you use the appropriate string gauge
I got some tax return money crying out to be spent on this guitar.
Edit: gold plated hardware is a bit sad. Gold plating uses up so goddamn fast
Just for info. Ebony isn't actually black. Most companies stain it to make it darker.
Oh I knoa it's not BLACK black, but this one seems awfully light hahah
@@sevenstringtv yeah ive had a few like that that got my confused at first too.
I really wish Ibanez would come up with some better names 😂
sevenstringtv is dead, long live eightstringtv
i love meshuggah :3
There's a very good chance to get bored of 8 string guitar after few months, 8 string is not 6 string guitar with added extra 2 but totally a different machine. If you won't learn to adapt to it and learn new techniques like thumping, slapping or any other advance lower note tapping for "bass feel" kind of thing then you will loose that excitement because of just chugging and will go back to 6 strings. Speaking from experience and seeing a hell lot of guitarist feeling the same thing.
I doubt it
Eightstringtv?
Nyatoh is a cheap wood for that price point
F*cks sake, gotta make another channel now.
now do some archspire covers
If Dean comes and teaches me some
So now youre 8stringTV? ahaha
Baritone 6 string better
