    Not only an excellent evaluation of the intersection between NFTs and philately, but also just one of the easiest-to-understand explanations of the blockchain that I’ve ever seen. I'm a philatelist and history buff who also happens to work full-time in the blockchain technology industry as a copywriter. As a passionate believer in blockchain and a lover of art and history, the connection between stamp-collecting and NFTs was a no-brainer for me. However, I never expected to see these two worlds collide with one of the best explanations of blockchain tech I've ever heard. I appreciate you taking the time to do research and explain this to your audience. Thank you for having an open mind and exploring an industry that is often misunderstood. I've always loved your channel but now I'm a subscriber for life

      P.S. Ethereum became proof-of-stake in 2022, meaning it now consumes 99% less energy than it did previously when it was proof of work.
      Also, even though the markets are down right now, layer 2 scaling solutions like Polygon and Optimism are thriving on Ethereum. They make transactions cheaper and faster. I could see them playing a huge role in the future of philately or any other type of collecting. Imagine if you had a digital catalog of your stamp collection that was fraud-proof and connected to your digital identity. When you buy or sell a stamp in your collection, the digital version - an NFT or digital collectible - is automatically transferred to the new owner's catalog.
      This is already in use in Reddit avatars and many fashion designers to track and prove authenticity. Even Starbucks is using Polygon for its new reward program.

    Sappy though it may be, your speech about the value of philately articulated nicely my personal opposition to NFTs, both within philately and in general. Ignoring the negative environmental consequences (which do concern me greatly), these are speculative assets whose only real purpose is to inflate their value with no other avenue of study available. As with all speculative asset bubbles once they run out of new marks to take advantage of, a handful of lucky early adopters will make bank while most will be left losing their shirts.
    I particularly feel for the visual artists who have been sold on this idea as a means to make a living, as they stand to lose the most of all. In addition, I've already seen far too many artists have their work minted as NFTs against their will with no recourse available to them.
    That being said, I don't necessarily blame postal services for jumping on a trend to make a quick buck. If nothing else, the physical stamps will serve as an interesting record of this time in the years to come.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  2 года назад +2

      I think that is a key thing that needs to be stressed. There is a lot of money to be lost here, while we hear of the artists and NFT sellers becoming millionaires overnight, there are many more that will be 'losing their shirts' as you mentioned. Thank you for watching!

    Illuminating video, I agree with your sentiments.
    I don't mind digital collectibles as long as there's a physical item linked to it, like with the Austrian stamp you purchased. But do you think that QR code (and the vault) will still work in 50, 100, 150 years' time? I know a penny black will still 'work' and change hands long after I die.

    Perhaps I am a bit old fashion in that I want to collect something that is tangible, that I can hold and admire; something that has a unique beauty like art. Your black and white videos may be a bit sappy, but they remind us of why philately is so appealing. I want to appreciate a stamp's artistic beauty, it's history, or the stories behind the way it traveled on it's journey from sender to recipient. I made my living in IT and appreciate all the advances the digital world has brought to our lives, including this hobby; but, there is nothing about NFTs or digital postage that will stir the same romanticism associated with the beautiful art of a tangible stamp and all of the stories that make it's history. Thank you Graham for delving into this new world of NFTs and the way you explained how it works and where this new technology is headed. More importantly, thank you for reminding us of why we all fell in love with philately and why those elements are the real reason this hobby is so meaningful and popular.

I loved that “sappy” love letter to philately that you included, I’m not going to lie it actually moved me. I would consider purchasing an NFT stamp but only if it was about a topic I collect and only if I can add a matching physical stamp to my collection. If I don’t get a physical something that I can store in my stock book I feel like I would forget about it.

      I think collecting should always be fun and people should only buy stuff they want for the pleasure of having it. Speculation has spoiled other hobbies such as comic collecting and collectible cards. People are “slabbing” comics. Putting them in plastic blocks thar guarantee the condition. You can’t read the comic. Similarly, people pay lots of money for unopened toys. Toys are for playing with and displaying. Comics are for reading and appreciating the art. Stamps are for the joy of looking at them and learning about their history and the themes they depict. As long as collectors buy stuff that gives them pleasure they can’t lose- whether that is physical objects of digital. People who just want an investment should invest in the stock market and leave collectibles for people who will treasure them.

    It's the story and history of the physical stamp, the reason why those were issued, the joy of seeing the stamp "in the flesh" without any need of an application or a wallet. NFTs are here, just in the other side of the spectrum, a different hobby altogether in my opinion. But postage stamps transitioning into NFTs in a way can help in the preservation of such items. Great video Graham. I am not sure what to think of these issues. I mean, where there are physical stamps issued tied to the stamps (as in the Austria Rhino, or the new United Arab Emirates issue for their 50th Anniversary of Independence) I can see the items as having a clear connection to philately (and even moreso if you can find them used on commercial cover, though given the face values that is likely a daunting challenge,) The USPS Veve tie-in with the Day of the Dead though just seems very odd to me - why collect a digital version when you can have the hard copy would I think be the response of most "traditional" stamp collectors. Perhaps it might be better to say that this is the intersection between the world of stamp collecting and the world of digtial NFT collecting. Whether or not the NFT collecting "hobby" is a fad fuelled by money looking for a better rate of return, or actually can become the "next wave" of collecting as postal services move forward with digitalization of their services is another question. Gene from Colnect.

    • @ExploringStamps

      Oh totally Gene, that is a really good way to put it "Intersection between the world of stamp collecting and NFT collecting". What I didn't mention that you just brought up is the current economic situation in which the NFTs were born in, finding better rates of return. Basically this area could be highly sensitive to any changes in the economy. The concept is still young, lets see..Fad or future?

    I did a deep dive on NFTs and crypto a couple of months ago. It's a fascinating field, but a lot of the criticisms are fair. It still feels very Wild West-ish, and a lot of companies and people are just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. The environmental concerns are definitely valid, though there are some other blockchains like Tezos that use proof-of-stake instead of proof-of-work, so they use much less energy. All in all, I definitely think this is its own branch of philately, and will definitely grow if/when postage stamps get tied to the blockchain in a more real way than just novelty items.

    Philately is the collecting of stamps that at the time of their issue we’re fungible. They may, over time, have become non fungible. NFTs we’re never created to be used as postage therefore do not qualify as philatelic items. Rather they are a get rich quick scheme.

    Hi, i found myself here when searching for a slightly different approach. Wanted to look into Scanning & Uploading & NFT'ing & Selling stamps from a personal collection. Maybe best idea is to promise to send the physical stamp when the NFT is bought by someone. Just thinking out loud: this could probably be done on eBay without going through the NFT process. OK Maybe the NFT is to have a digital ownership contract, but if we let the buyer worry about that part if he wants that or not, and we just sell the physical stamp by actually mailing it to them... donno :)

    One question which has a profound effect on the value of anything is survival rate? It seems the NFT digital collectible has a long survival rate. If it thrives, to reduce operating costs, the amount of power will be reduced so there will be more of these "unique" collectible. I like the comaprison to owner a share in a franchise. Basically the more investors into a franchise the smaller the portion unless it is refinanced with more money to allow greater value of shares in the franchise. If the franchise fails then your shares are worthless. So the danger is NFTs are in a huge bubble and the supply of them is increasing.
    As for the UN Crypto stamps have 15 varieties based on which of the 15 program goals is connected with your souvenir stamp.

    Two things caught my attention. First concealing the color of the Austrian NFT until after purchase reminded me of the various little packets of cards/stickers that one would get at petrol stations (South Africa in the 70s and 80s). You would accumulate an increasing pile of, say, the Liverpool FC cards in the hope of getting the rare, say, Manchester City card. Then after a few months you forgot the whole business anyway.
    Second, there does not seem to be an equivalent of my collecting interests. For example, postally used recent stamps from African countries. The stamps are produced in the millions. They're not rare or worth much mint. With a little savings, I could purchase a complete mint collection over a weekend or two. But actually used? There are not many but they're not expensive either as few collectors are interested. But finding them is really hard and when I do get any I know that they likely performed a useful task for an ordinary person in a distant country.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  2 года назад +1

      I LOVE your comparison David. As with all your perfectly amazing videos, you are the first person who has coherently explained NFTs to me and I have heard quite a number of them. You have taken a complex topic and made it understandable. But most importantly, you discuss the implications of blockchain on philately from a large number of perspectives. You have given this deep thought. Superficially, it seems one major thing which differentiates NFTs from real objects is that the NFT "impulse" is really around the concept of ownership and bragging rights vs. all the more complex reasons collectors collect stamps as physical objects. Your "sappy speech" isn't sappy; it is a very elegant explanation for why we collect and provides a strong case for "old school" collecting. We shall see if NFTs end up as the Dutch tulips did - they lost their value but still remained pretty flowers. But sometimes you just need another rhino in the collection. There is no shame in that :-) Again, I can't tell you how much I enjoy your channel. You seem to put everything into producing this content. Keep it up!
