This is my reaction, breakdown and analysis of Always be my baby by Mariah Carey live at the Tokyo dome. This is from her 1995 album Daydream which features other great hits like Fantasy, Underneath the Stars and forever, and has become one of my favorite albums of hers. In mariah’s singing we here a much brighter, more forward sound, placed in the nasal passageways, with more of a mix in it. This is very characteristic of this era of Mariah. By this time she was using less of her original chesty, a little more backwards placement and really bringing her sound forward. This tends to be a lot healthier even though I do miss the rich color we got in her earlier albums.
Mariah is such a genius when it comes to songwriting and pushing the limits in terms of what vocalists can do. She went on to influence many pop singers including Ariana Grande and Christina Aguilera, and she is an influence of mine as well. Her agility is astounding, as is her mixing range and her whistle register. Not too many people can do that lol.

That concert is from 1996 Daydream World Tour. She sold out the Tokyo Domethat has 200k seats in 2 hours (a record she holds 'till today) ❤️

Actually, this concert had 150k tickets and she outdid her own record with Butterfly Tour with 200k tickets sold in less than an hour, if i'm not mistaken.

I like that you are not biased and objectively point out any possible issues (eg. crack), and at the same hype the positives in the performance. Your Master's degree helps point things that my casual listening ear would never identify, especially Mariah's excellent vocal techniques.

Mariah has the most fragile voice in Pop Music and her not so durable voice created some of the most vocally demanding songs.

Your referring to was an intentional vocal break which she is the master of it and does it all the time.
that wasn't one of her better intentional vocal breaks, though. She did it a lot during that part of the song but it didn't come out as well during this performance

@@Jo-qf1gd Babe, listen to the other Daydream Tour versions of ABMB (1996 Tokyo, London, Paris, Rotterdam). She did that intentional break each time. This one (Tokyo) just didn't work as well.

I’m sure so many request & these might have been bought up already but if anything they’re great performances & during a point in 00s when her voice was really impressive.
Her resonance, clarity & control with range & fluidity through registers is beautiful but her voice has definitely matured or maybe placed differently to post 98. Would be great to hear your thoughts on them

Lmao the Japanese people are so polite that they don't want to sing out loud. There's a moment in that concert that I can sense Mariah's a bit frustrated because the people are so polite and she said that it's okay for them to be rude and scream and she loves that haha. She also performed this song in New York, same era, and you can definitely see the difference in the audience behavior lol
9:51 your note on that is so spot on! Mariah demonstrated this too when she explained to Brandy recently when she did the Masterclass series where they tried to redo the “baa..ack in time” phrase in her song The Roof. She definitely loves to play with her bass.

2:28 I believe the background singers did the same thing as the record: “doo doo doo”. Only Mariah does the “dum” on the record on that first bit but she didn’t here.
And as for the “crack”, it’s an intentional vocal break. I’m not even saying this as a defensive lamb lol, she has cracked on occasion even in her prime but those sound different from this. Consider that she always placed that “crack” on that specific part in all the tour dates. Which means she intended to have that texture and it’s the rule rather than the exception.
That was crack was not intentional and I am saying this as a hardcore lamb who has seen every live performance by Mariah ever.
It went off key for a start, she was trying to do an F5 (like the G5 in the remix version with DaBrat). It sounds nothing like an intentional vocal break.

OMG LUV..YOU!!! But ya, as polished and strong as this was, her 'Hero' from Tokyo Dome is WIDELY considered the BEST performance of it EVER..and that's saying a lot cuz Lambs have strong (and usually differing) opinions but most agree with the aforementioned claim. Also,Anytime You Need A Friend is one of her best (probably THE best) performances of that particular one. You should just do a 5 part (hour per) breakdown of the FULL concert!

Don't know if you've reacted to or analyzed any international artists, but I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest one Morissette Amon, who I believe is a desciple of Mariah. I would begin with her cover of "Never Enough". She blows Loren Allred out of the water. If I'm wrong, I'll go back to hiding under my rock. Love all of your analyses. And by all means keep putting out your own music.

Yep, it's not about high and low note only, but the capability of her to combine two or more timbre in one prhase. That's why her songs are difficult to sing 🤣🤣🤣

For me this wasn't an intentional crack as it sounds nothing like Mariah's other intentional breaks. It went off key slightly. In my opinion, she was clearly trying to hit an F5 (similar to how she does the G5 in the remix).
@@SilentAssassin01234 she still kept it in the dubbed version tho and she looked relaxed and in control. Usually when singers crack they look a little awkward and try to cover it up
@Mike Ehrmantraut I don't know why she left it in the dubbed. But she also left the off key YEAH in Make It Happen so maybe she did it to make it not seemed dubbed idk. She probably didn't crack in the actual live performance she could have just cracked when dubbing and it got left in.
It’s not that they didn’t wanna sing. Japanese people are very respectful. That’s the only place where you can really enjoy listening to singers when they are on stage. No screaming no yelling and they would only clap when you finish singing the song.

The crack on the 'ohOOho baby believe me...' was not intentional. It went off key and she has never cracked there before. It wasn't horrinle but her voice broke. It happens to every singer so it isn't an issue at all, I am just surprised she left it in on the dubbing.
@Robertmeyer7291 it is impossible for sound to come from the diaphragm given the vocal cords are in the throat.
Singing from the diaphragm is a myth. What people actually mean by that is you need to use your core muscles to support and control your air flow when singing.

this era mariah''s voice get tired easily, who can hear it, maybe because of the concert tour, and started of the making her Butterfly Album, DAydream Era ended 1996, and butterfly Era started 1997, then the Album #1's in 1998, Rainbow era in 1999, glitter was in 2001, so can u imagine how hectic her schedule? wondering how often her vocal rest she's getting during these Eras?

Mariah like Whitney has problem when it comes to endurance , she needed to talk to the audience more often when performing live over an extended period of time. That is why she tend to miss some notes during full concert performances as a result of vocal fatigue. That even reduces the vocal intensity and quality compared to her studio recording. Had he been born in Europe we could have seen a better version of her to what we are familiar of her right now.

I don’t know the last time I’ve listened to one of her songs besides your videos.
