I used to actually work at the Trader Horn north of Butler. Not only was it “your favorite store,” but it was also “my favorite job.” It was a family feel when you worked there. Even the owners treated everyone with the utmost respect and care. They were amazing people
Just stumbled on your video. It was indeed a KMart. I actually was the Revieving Manager there and opened that store. We worked a long time taking down the fitting rooms that K Mart had in there. I was there about 5 years and then moved on to other opportunities. Video brought back alot of memories.
Me and my grandfather used to always go to this Trader Horn. He unfortunately passed last year. This was his favorite store. Also I love watching your videos. Huge fan!

When you said a Brewery Outlet closed I wanted to cry. Who doesn't need buy beer? Who doesn't need beer after a frustating day dealing with the world! Even more so how can you let beer go to waste. Alcohol abuse. I will use that praise when people leave half empty good beer out. A year ago and you already showed the gifts that make you an awesome You Tube dead retail documentarian.
Catman Mark Blanchard I hope he keeps doing what he does best cause within a few more years theres gonna be alot more stores gonna be abandoned due to high wages and insurance price going up in places and not to mention the taxes gees.you think our country could give owners breaks..
Yeah, what one guy said. Kmart moved. I am not from this area. But that signature round HVAC vent gives away the fact it was a Kmart. Sad that they are gone.. I'm a michigander and kmart is a michigan company. They are thriving in Australia and New Zeland though.
Ethan Cool Monkey I just got started a little over a month ago! I need to share my channel better. Lol thanks for the support and subscribing! I really appreciate it! If you feel like it, feel free to share my channel!
If you look at time 2:19 and look at the faded paint from an angle where the sign used to be, it almost looks like there was evidence of the very old Kmart logo of where that sign used to be at one time. The building also looks like an old Kmart building.
Being someone who has seen a scar of the italic Kmart logo in person (Sidney, NY), it's there clear as day. It's more faded than the one I've seen in person (probably in part because of the Trader Horn sign that came after), which was never repurposed, but it's definately there.
At one point there were 13 stores. I used work at the corporate store. The stores were actually suppose to go to their granddaughter but she is around the age of 14 right now. Not old enough to own a corporation.
Such a sad end to such a great place to shop. My family and I really enjoyed shopping at TH. Obviously, yeah, a 14 year old cant run a corporation as you mentioned. Just a shame nothing else could have happened to save the chain. We frequented the McCandless store all the time.
@@WallieB26 its super sad, the community loved all the stores. I even told the owners wife that she could easily leave the stores open. The managers(which I was one of them) could run the stores like we always did, just sign the checks.
@@kelseybeining7280 I can understand that she probably just didnt want to have to deal with the whole process. I know it's easier said than done. I know the stores would still be doing well as they always were. We were really sad when we saw the news article on KDKA and then went to our location for the last time. I miss the place.
Thomas. Adcock Yeah, that's one of the things I noticed too. I always account the oddest things to be from something else. I saw those vents and quickly thought Kmart as well.
Kmart had a couple rounds of closings in the 1990s, perhaps this one was one of those. We had one in Western Lights Plaza (Syracuse, NY) that looked exactly like this; now part of it is a state DMV office. It closed as a K-mart in the 1990s along with both Auburn locations and their Camillus location, although the latter left in part because the mall died.
This looks just like our old Kmart at the Park Plaza here in Ogdensburg New york! The customer service Booth even looks identical and in the same location as well as the checkout counters even the front of the store looks the same. Unfortunately that Kmart moved in 1990 and the entire shopping center was torn down in 2009.
Trader Horn was an excellent store. I used to shop at the one in Clarion PA and the one off of PA 28 North toward North Kittanning PA. last exit before it turns into a two lane. These were a great store I shopped there from 2008-2014 when I moved back home. Wal-Mart Brought this I heard.
+WallieB26 This was originally a Kmart store. Kmart moved to another store on November 18, 1991. Trader Horn moved into the former Kmart space in 1992 and closed in early 2015. Oddly enough the auto center was turned into a beverage place called Brew'ry Outlet (now closed too). There has been a dispute about whether or not to build a Walmart on this property for the last several years. Source: www.flickr.com/photos/fanofretail/27076678753
SCHOOLBUS Wisconsin channel Oh I know all too well about the dispute over the Wal-Mart. And thanks for letting me know this was a Kmart! I just had that feeling this was one.
SCHOOLBUS Wisconsin channel So many people who live in this area complained and cried about having a Wal-Mart here and the traffic and type of people that would be here if it opened. But I heard recently giant eagle bought the property so Wal-Mart cannot build a store here. Giant Eagle has a store across McKnight Road and owns that shopping center. I guess they're just going to let this land rot unless they plan to build a Market District here.
Hey wallie, In eastern pa we have quite a few giant supermarkets. Are other big chain is renders warehouse market. We also had bottom dollar. I know you guys had bottom dollars out in western pa. Its a shame they went under. They were a nice place to shop at and also work for. I worked for them for almost 3 and a half years and got out before the bottom fell out. Aldi bought all of the bottom dollar stores.
Scott Lillis Yeah, it sucked that Bottom Dollar closed. I liked them a lot because I'm so used to Food Lion down south. And since Bottom Dollar was Food Lion's discount store, it made me partially feel like I was at Food Lion. Their prices were great too.
Interesting . . . . me being in Maryland, I've never been to a Trader Horn (good to hear about other chains). As for Giant Eagle . . . well, there's one in Frederick and two of their GetGo gas stations/convenience stores also in Frederick.
DukeofColumbia Wow. I'm surprised to learn Giant Eagle and Get Go stretch out that far. I mean I know they are as far as Cleveland, Oh. It's just surprising since Giant Eagle and Get Go are Pittsburgh based. I thought Frederick is Food Lion territory. Lol
I always found it weird there were Giant Eagles in Frederick. For anyone reading this familiar with abandoned malls, there is a Giant Eagle practically next door to the Frederick Towne Mall. I telecommute now, but I used to drive from Gettysburg to Frederick for work everyday.
the same think happened to my first job. I was a cleaner person at Kirby's restaurant in Liverpool new York. we were one of 3 locations I think. the owner was getting old in his 70s and did not want to keep my location open. it needed a lot of restoration done to it and was not worth keeping open. advanced auto parts took it over and it is now a auto part store. the rude part was they did not tell the Monday workers we were going out of business. so we close down for good leaving a note on the door. sorry we have closed down. if you have a gift card one of are other locations would be happy to help you. tell them you got the gift card at Liverpool and they will let you use it there. then all the Monday people show up to a note on the door and no one around or in the building. so sad. they did how ever tell me they were letting me go and not to come in on Monday morning.
That's still a lousy way of getting laid off. They should have at least told you a couple of weeks in advance so you could look for a new job. I know Trader Horn employees had a month's notice before all the stores closed down. It sucked. I loved that store.
When I was growing up here in Florida we only had a few retail places lights Zehrs Kmart stuff like that . They're out of business here now the way you talk there's a bunch of different kind of story up north.
Everyone opposed the walmart because it was going to cause problems for the local elementary schools and local businesses. The people defending these were not stuck up or snobby, just trying to preserve their community, a community i grew up in.
That makes me sad. At least I have Wallie's videos to be able to compare and contrast a Kmart from before the Big K format that has seen some maintainance to the one I have been inside of (and will be revisiting this weekend) in Sidney, NY. Both this store and the one I've filmed in Sidney closed in the early 90s when Kmart moved to a nearby larger building (1992 is the date on the power breakers in Sidney, the location they moved to closed in late February 2020). The Sidney location was never repurposed, you can walk right in through either the garden centre or a shot out window, however as a result of that window, the Sidney location has become a bird habitat and is very much hurting from the effects of the bird droppings. These videos show me what it would look like without the bird droppings and the effects they bring.
Old Timer honestly I'm surprised no body did either. However, this is in a nicer part of town and this store is hidden from the roads so in a way, I guess people tend to forget it's there. The first time I tried to film here, there was a fire department doing training out front. I'm sure that's another reason no one messes with that place.
