Make a second MDF wheel the same way you made this one, then on your band saw, using the finest blade you have, make 1/2 inch deep cuts every 2 inches. These relief cuts will help keep your blade cool, this will make more sense as I continue. Mount your new wheel to the opposite side of the grinder as your original sharpening disk. After you go through the finishing stage as you did with the first wheel, apply a light coat of jewelers rouge to your new wheel. This second wheel will be your finishing wheel, used to remove any fine burrs, or wire left on the blade, leaving you with an absolutely perfect edge. If you're concerned about tying up your bench grinder with 2 sharpening disks, pick up a cheap bench grinder from Harbor Freight, Craigslist or even a garage sale, and make it your dedicated sharpening station, completely freeing up your better quality grinder for other operations. This sharpening station is now perfect for sharpening everything from a pocket knife, to a kitchen knife, and even an axe head. You can also unbolt the grinder from it's base, turn it 180 degrees, and reattach it to the base. Now, the switch will be on the front of the grinder, and the top of the wheels will turn away from you.
Good video I’d like to add that to make using this method safer I plan to use a speed control to slow the wheel down it may take me a little longer but that’s okay. Regards, Tom
Help! Made one of these today. Double thick 1/2" MDF glued together. Used a chisel and sandpaper on a block to get it smooth and round. Charged it with white compound. And all I could do is blunt my knives, which were sharp before. I use stones and a strop to get hair shaving sharp easily. I thought MDF would be an upgrade. I have a variable speed bench grinder and I definitely have some side to side wobble on the wheel. Is this why I am finding blunt knives after doing this?
The wobble is definitely not good. That means it out of balance or not flat and round. To sharpen the knives, it all about the angle. It should be approximately 20 degree angle.
