I believe George Hearn was actually a lay minute replacement for this performance. He jumped in decades later to turn out such an incredible performance. What a pro.
If you have any doubt about this, seek ye out the 1982 video of the original production of Sweeney Todd that was shown a lot on PBS in the 1980s and early 1990s.
This performance and the original performance show why he is the best Sweeney Todd . George Hearn makes me believe that he’s Sweeney Todd . Just the madness I feel and the tenderness nobody does it better
Something about this sequence is just. I dunno. Oddly wholesome. The context makes it pretty morbid and horrifying but the lyrics and melody out of context being two sweet old men singing and reminiscing about cute girls is just strangely heartwarming.

I still say that George Hearn gives the singular best performance of "Epiphany" ever here.
Agreed!
Imo Timothy Nolen is the best. But George was great here
Totally agree
There is no better Sweeney than George Hearn!! When he does "Epiphany", he is PURE FURY!!

George is by far the best Sweeney Todd in my book. I love his theatrical performance from the early 80’s. That voice. The man. ❤👌🏼
George's whistling is perfection at his finest a true legendary talent a true Broadway bird
I agree. I'd love to play Sweeney one day, but I can't whistle, so that's a definite knock against my prospects, lol
Pretty Women has the perfect melancholic setup to the cracked anguish of Epiphany. What a play, what a performance
These two not only sing beautifully--they also have perfect enunciation. I've seen several renditions of this and they are the best by far.
The harmony they have together is like gold really gives you Goosebumps when they hit those notes together.
Both actors have played Sweeney. George played The Judge with Michael Cerveris at the concert for Sondheim's 80th Birthday!!
5:36 "[...] for you'll have none! of mine!" the judges delivery was metal.
George Hearn my not have an originated the role, but he definitely THE Sweeney in my mind.
RIP to Timothy Nolen, there should have been more news about his death.
The cutting edge of musical theatre. Thank you for this gem.
I really enjoyed this concert. The singing was over the top!
"The cutting edge" what such a nice joke, especially in a Sweeney Todd video :D
@@cartuchonovo2470 I'm glad someone saw the joke. Thanks for your sharp observation.
@@richardgornalle4536 of course my good friend. I like to cut straight into the references
The cutting edge lol
George is and always will be one of the greatest Broadway legends of all time
So very true
I believe George is the greatest Broadway legend--tied with Patti LuPone.
7:57 The AGRESSION from one line is done magnificently, I love the power you feel from it it’s done beautifully
This performance and the original performance show why he is the best Sweeney Todd . George Hearn makes me believe that he’s Sweeney Todd . Just the madness I feel and the tenderness nobody does it better
everything in this performance is perfect. the vocals, the face expression, the moves, the orchestra, the costumes.
The harmony on Pretty Women is astounding!
Anthony looks so terribly scared when Sweeney tells him to get out…
My favourite rendition of Pretty Women, and perhaps my favourite of all productions of Sweeney Todd.

I always loved his epiphany in the 1982 recording but dang he corrected that final F# that he was a little pitchy on then perfectly here
I prefer Timothy Nolen (Turpin) as Sweeney. IMO he’s the greatest Sweeney Todd
This is magnificent
Amazing ❤
SO. SO GOOD! Amazing performance!
6:09 true mom and dad moment right there.
Love the inside out navy uniform.
NPH as Tobias, wore an inside-out sport coat.

Daaaaaamn.
Listening to George hearn really shows how not cool it was to cast Johnny Depp when Mr Todd's voice should be this beautiful
Really... It was a crime. Ha!
2024 alguém?
Con razón me persigue la policía, ha de ser ilegal no haber visto la obra completa xd
Wow what a powerful musical I LOVE Eminem 😍😍❤️🥰😍
What?
Eminem is the best!♡♡
Not sure what the second half of the comment has to do with anything, but yes, this musical is powerful.
I know Johnny was watching this over and over swooning knowing he’d nail it
Lupone was a miscast tho
I would love to hear your thoughts as to why Patti was miscast here.
@@SomeDaysYoureBarbra I hope @Aanddunno has been typing an essay of a reply for the past few months, because I too would like to know reasoning.
Timpanist/tom-tom player apparently has never listened to the Original cast album...
