I'd love to see a reaction video to last years anticipated reads 😁 It would be fun to see if you ended up liking them or not!
Yeeeees😍
That's a great idea!
I loooove you putting up a smaller book to help us know where we know the author of new book from. That is super helpful. 😊
I am Begging publishers to quit pushing the adobe illustrator vector art agenda for book covers, it looks so cheap and all the books look the same 😭
Like which books?
Yes! It's like part of the book deal is that the authors have to make their own book covers!
Couldn’t agree more… so off putting. They look like children books
Sameee but also the uglier the covers, the more I save money
@@Jacquelynrose94 Almost all romance novels, for starters
2:03 I personally love that you don’t read the plot - I like the sprinkles of synopsis and then explaining what is drawing you towards the book (and your thoughts about the cover of course!)
That's what reels me in and makes it more relatable because I often don't read the whole synopsis. I read the first couple sentences, open the book, read a third of a randomly chosen page to sample the writing style, and admire the cover.
I think a video where you look at old "Most Anticipated Reads of..." videos and see how many you read, and whether you liked them, would be fun. :)
I know you always look up pronunciations later for unfamiliar words and author names, which I so appreciate! ❤But yes, you were right to switch to the hard g for "Ganga" :) in Sanskrit, it sounds like gun-ga. The river is sometimes called "the Ganges" (said like gan-jees) but that's the anglicized version!
I was really hoping to see you mention Someone You Can Build a Nest In, please look into it! It looks like a weird horror/fantasy romance and I can't wait to read it.
I'd be curious for you to react to your 2023 anticipated books, whether you read them or are still interested.
I can’t wait for the EMILY WILDE sequel! My friend gifted me LORE OF THE WILDS for my Christmas Day birthday (early copy from a book box, I think). I’m excited to read it! Also, Lindy Ryan is a screenwriter, too! I knew her name looked familiar! 🥰
For your fairy era, I highly recommend War For the Oaks, by Emma Bull. It's got the soft vibes and tricky fae of Emily Wilde. It's a classic of the "fae in the real world" genre, and deservedly so. One of my favorite books of all time.
Had an arc of the Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice. It was so good. Very fast paced and funny. One of the best of the series.
The exact video I wanted to watch at the exact time I opened my RUclips app! How perfect!
OK, let’s face facts, we’re all going to read the Riley Sager, no matter what this year lol.
The Stuart Turton book sounds interesting! Pretty cover too.
Kayla! Ugh. I love that we have similar vibes. But, it's killing my TBR! 😅 I'll have to come back and add many of these to my growing pile. Not that I mind... ... ...
I love your videos!
I'm excited for A.J.Finn end of story comes out February 20, 2024
I've created a radar shelf because of you, and find that it helps so much to keep up with books I may get to someday!! Added so many good recs from this video ahhh I'm most excited for "The extinction of Irena Rey", I love weird fever dream books about mushrooms 🍄🤪
If you are looking for a Finlay Donovan comp, The Expectant Detectives by Kat Ailes just came out this month and is such fun. Great humor as well!
I really don't need to add to my TBR but here I am 😂.
Also, reaction videos going through past videos are some of my favs!!
Loved your input! Considered, inclusive and discerning. Great for all who books serve as a doorway to other worlds ❤
I’m very excited for Goddess of the River. Also I can’t wait for my preorder of the new Emily Itami book. 😊
There are so many good books coming out in 2024
I love this! I’m really excited to read once in a millennial and Beautyland in January!
Just added 9 books to my list for next year! Thanks!!😊
We need to talk about How to become the Dark Lord and Die Trying - because omg
But honestly, at this point the English Books I'm reading (I'm Swiss) are exclusively the ones I'm seeing on your channel because our taste matches so perfectly
I always add things to my wishlist when you do these videos but I love it💕
It's really old (from 2005), but I think you'd like The Givenchy Code by Julie Kenner. It fits the "wacky thriller" bill you're looking for.
Okay, I'm LOVING the new besties emoji, AH! So many on this list I'm anticipating with you - mostly the ones that appeared at the end! Funny Story because I'm a children's librarian like the MC, Sheine Lende because I LOVED Elatsoe after you read it, Island Witch because South Asian folklore, A Tempest of Tea because of the Six of Crows comparisons, A Love Song for Ricki Wilde because of the Harlem Renaissance setting, and omg PRIVATE RITES!!! I'm hoping the final cover will be as amazing as the UK editions of Our Wives Under the Sea.
Wayward children 👍👍👍LOVED these, super excited about #9 being out
Ooh, no The Angel of Indian Lake, third book in SGJ's Indian Lake trilogy?
I generally don't pay a lot of attention to what is coming out when, but this year I do have a couple of titles on my radar! Some you already mentioned, and in addition:
- A Quantum Love Story, by Mike Chen - I am adamant on finding a romance novel I enjoy this year 😂 it's not that I think I HAVE to enjoy romance, but I like romcoms, so I feel like there should be a romance novel out there I'll enjoy
- Midnight on Beacon Street, Emily Ruth Verona - I've really been looking for horror novels with that '90's Fear Street feel, and this sounds like it would fit the bill
- Unbound, Christy Healy - I want to read more retellings of classic stories this year
- The Tusks of Extinction, Ray Nayler - I really enjoyed The Mountain in the Sea, so I'm interested in reading more by this author
- Supplication, Nour Abi-Nakhoul - I mean, have you seen the cover?!
Ahhhh! Jenny Kiefer runs a horror bookstore in Louisville. Hoping to go to her event for her book next month!
i always appreciate these videos bc i'm so out of the loop on new releases 😅
So many books to look into!
I just finished an audiobook ARC of Bless your Heart! I really enjoyed it, it wasn’t anything spectacular but I had such a fun time listening and the narrator was really good imo for those who like audiobooks!
Thanks for including the extras on your list. A new Julia Armfield! I will be looking into that one. ❤
this is like a quarterly newsletter and i absolutely love it
I love these videos so much, makes me so excited for everything to come! I have The Familiar, Tempest of Tea, One of you & faebound pre-ordered!Buzzing about a Django Wexler book making this list, he’s been self publishing books for years and he finally got picked up by a trad publisher which ya love to see!!
There is also Veronica Ruiz Breaks the Bank: A Short Story (The Finlay Donovan Series) by Elle Cosimano that came out this last November.
Such a helpful video! 😊 The previous book of Katy Brent - How to kill men and get away with it is phenomenal. I can't wait for more from her. 😍
I’m so excited for the familiar 😩
this is one of my fav videos every year ❤
I fell in love with Django Wexler this year so I trust Dark Lord is going to be good 🤞
Had to add some of these to my TBR! ESP Immortal Pleasures
I know you read the night tiger by yangsze choo. She has a new one coming out in February called The Fox wife it looks really good.
Hey Kayla, have you seen K. Ancrum is releasing a Frankenstein retelling called Adam, Mine!! No release date yet!
ohh i forgot finlay donovan in my antipcated releases!! love her writing!
I can’t wait to read botanical daughter 😩
Ooooh I have been looking to make a list of 2024 goals books, perfect timing for this video! :D
I have a non bookish related question. Can you tell me what hair dye you’re using? Mine got discontinued and I am trying to find a different alternative. Much appreciated!!! Thank you!!! ❤ also, great list of anticipated books! I’ve added a bunch from here too.
Looks like some good stories are afoot for the new year! Thanks for sharing.
You should make a video playing the Hidden Books Gamefrom National Book Tokens (inspired by a Jack Edward’s video) it looks so fun
I already have like 30 arcs for the first 3 months oops
Always look forward to this video!
sooo many of these are also on my list :P
I thought only ones left was the last Riley sager for a while - so glad that’s not true
JUst a heads up the author of Supplication, her name is pronounced nʊːr ( I am not really sure about the ipa symbols but this is the closest I could come up with) ou is pronounced like the u in nutella or the oo in cool. the r is rolled.
Yaaaay!!!
Idk why but I thought for sure seasonal fears would be the last book in the alchemical journeys series. Nevertheless, I am cautiously excited.
I know her goal has always been 4 books, to complete the seasonal intent-but I thought maybe with the early reception of book 2 she might not get the chance. 😬 Happy to continue and hope we all love it!!
As if I’m not adding these to my already 200+ tbr😅❤
Ours by Phillip B Williams looks extremely intriguing.
“An enigmatic woman named Saint, a fearsome conjuror who, in the 1830s, annihilates plantations all over Arkansas to rescue the people enslaved there. She brings those she has freed to a haven of her own creation: a town just north of St. Louis, magically concealed from outsiders, named Ours.
Although Saint does her best to protect the inhabitants of Ours, over time, her conjuring and memories begin to betray her, leaving the town vulnerable to intrusions by newcomers with powers of their own. As the cracks in Saint’s creation are exposed, some begin to wonder whether the community’s safety might be yet another form of bondage.
Set over the course of four decades and steeped in a rich tradition of American literature informed by Black surrealism, mythology, and spirituality.”
Lore of the Wilds looks like it's adult! It's priced as an adult hardcover.
Awesome! Now all you need is to add my book on that list 😂😂😂 I'm kidding (or am i?)
Off topic: very pretty hair color!!
Ahhhh my fav video of the year!! Time to get out Goodreads (and my wallet) 👀
are you planning on reading the sequel to elatsoe? :)
yes yes SO EXCITED FOR WE ATE THE DARK
They all sound amazing!
That new book by the author of Kikeyi sounds like it’s about mother Ganges
I wasn't too enamoured by the 2024 releases at first (too much romance!). Until I realised I had thirty books marked 'most anticipated' 😂
Also on my list is Towards Eternity by Anton Hur (sci fi), who's translated a lot of works from korean, like Cursed Bunny for example.
Is it just me, or do two of the books on your most anticipated have covers eerily similar to The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager 👀
I don’t see it, feel like it’s always been common for horrors or thrillers to have covers with houses, so don’t think it’s anything new or inspired by Sager’s
Unrelated, but I'm so over all romance covers looking the same --'
I can't tell any of them apart
One I'm anticipating is The Stars Too Fondly by Emily Hamilton. Its an adult sapphic romcom in space!
❤
Finley Donovan-alike rec: The Patron Saint of Second Chances by Christine Simon. It was my favorite book of last year and I’m listening to it again now! It’s not at all thrillery and there’s no mystery, BUT it’s about a character who accidentally starts a con that keeps snowballing into crazier and crazier hijinks and he has to figure out a way out of it. It’s absolutely hilarious and so cozy and heartwarming!
I see a lot of the books at the end can apply to the buzzword challenge 🤓
I'm so excited for The Boyfriend Subscription!
There are some very weird books on this list and I’m loving it!
Idk why I expected “The Young of Other Animals” to be on this list, but you should def check it out! We have similar reading tastes and I found the novel gripping!!! Please let us know if you read it and what you think! It comes out Feb 1, but it’ll be on the January prime reading so you can get it for free
Happy new year!!
Next year looks absolutely STACKED. Two new full length SGJ books?? I am not worthy! A few of my most anticipated I didn't see here are the new Grady Hendrix, Rachel Hawkins, Sarah Langan, Simone ST. James, and C.J. Tudor. haha like literally ALL my fave authors have new releases next year 😅
would love a reaction to your most anticipated!!
Love this thumbnail
if you're looking for more cozy, fun books...Moon Soul is a cozy science fantasy about a girl living in a utopian society on a purple desert moon. She is only half human and she can read memories in the sand. When she burns out from this and decides to quit her job, she has to find her place in a world she doesn't quite fit into...and along the way she meets some interesting people and confronts someone from her past.
Some of these covers look exactly like something you’d design for a “guessing covers” video
FALALALALALALALAAAA
Oh No Kayla!! I hate fantasy!!🤮
