COMMENT: Have you visited any of The Great Gatsby’s mansions? Which one is your favorite from the list?

      F. Scott Fitzgerald spent alot of time in Bayside, Queens NY partying with silent movie actor's who lived there during the roaring 20s. It was close enough to the movie studios in Astoria but far enough away to have drinking parties during prohibition without prying eyes. The gold Coast estates where built by and for the gilded age robber barons to entertain high society. I doubt Fitzgerald ever got invited but heard stories about the parties they held there.

These videos are an exercise in heartbreak, because many of these majestic buildings have been torn down and lost to time.

I always loved The Breakers in the movie with Redford. That is my dream house.

At 1:48 that's not Alva Vanderbilt's mansion. That was built by George Washington Vanderbilt in 1895 in Asheville, NC., known as the Biltmore House.

Actually much of what is written about in the 'The Great Gatsby' took place in Northeast Queens, in the towns of 😮Bayside and Little Neck. Bayside was west egg, Little Neck was east egg. They are both opposite each other when looking across the long island sound with the Bayside marina in the middle. Many silent movie stars lived in Bayside. Rudy Valentinos house is still there and has been turned into a restaurant.

Yes I have visited Oheka and Lands End. It was a shame about Lands End. I see the plot has been subdivided, where the house once stood the pool and pool house still remain, and there is another residence being built. I believe there are five residences either already built or in the construction process, where the mansion once stood.

Only one house inspired Gatsbys actual house in the novel and that was Beacon Towers. Just read the description and view the photos from the sound. Other individuals, living in houses nearby giving parties in those mansions inspired the character of Gatsby and his parties.

Back when the book was written the Bayside Marina had a long dock and was situated off of Northern Blvd jutting out into the long island sound between the towns of Bayside and Little Neck. That's where many famous silent movie stars lived and played. Fitzgerald spent alot of time hanging out there.
The gold Coast was built by and for high society. I doubt he ever got invited to those parties but heard lots about it and used it in his book.

A marble swimming pool? How gaudy and cheap. Mine is made out of solid gold 😮‍💨

Unfortunately I've neither visited any of the magnificent homes herewith nor, I regret to say, read The Great Gatsby. Having never liked Mia Farrow I never watched the earlier film version. Same applies to De Caprio but with my fascination for architecture and The Golden Age and, thanks to your wonderful videos on the topic, I have just ordered both versions of the films. I may be too old now to visit any of the inspirational buildings that have avoided the wrecking ball but I'm enjoying the old photographs and more recently your stunning and educational videos so it's not all bad. Thank you for making this one. Having watched the films I will again watch this video so I get my bearings correctly.

That first estate described as Alva Vanderbilt Belmont's 5th ave digs, is the Biltmore Estate in Asheville NC. This estate belonged to George Vanderbilt. I've been many times and I love it.

I noticed the same having also visited the Biltmore Estate and seeing several videos about both the 5th Ave "petite chateau" and The Biltmore.

Land's End: It could have been designed by White, but just never built until after his death. Sort of like all the post-1809 Matthew Bolton (died Aug. 17, 1809) silver that exists. At least Captain De Lamar's NYC mansion is still standing. I've always felt that there should have been a sign somewhere in front of Beacon Towers that read "Union Station." As you can guess, I never liked this mansion; it seems to me to be both over-done and yet too plain at the same time just like an urban railroad station.

And now they build many homes twice the size as Lands End, including hundreds of vacation homes.
