Something to note about flying backwards, when you first learn this and try to fly normally, you may find that you can't or it feels hard for some reason, this is natural, your brain for some reason is trying to use the backward controls for normal flying, so just spend some time flying back and fourth between the goals like normal to correct this.
As a Diamond 2 trying to reach champ, the exercises involving flying backwards and/or without air roll around the edges really showed to me what I was lacking in the air, as I had little to no use for those mechanics in a competitive game. Usually, the mechanics I already had covered up what I needed to actually learn. Thank you so much Thanovic!

@@dc_maru Nobody’s trying to refute that fact, op was just saying that it’s nice to see someone make an aerial control video that’s all inclusive (for example, this video is really helpful for me, who plays console)
A big tip people don’t take seriously is the fact your boost is what moves almost 75% of your car the input from the analog stick is what twists the car than the timing of boost is what makes you move that direction, practice focusing on your boost when your flying goal to goal it will help you better control your cars angle and better your aerial control to eventually get better with the ball
This is probably one of the best videos on the topic. I’ve been playing for maybe 4-5 months, made it to diamond 2 in under 300 hours and could hit basic aerials, dribbles, flicks, and stuff like that, but struggled with anything in the air that wasn’t a basic aerial. It was starting to impact my games a lot, even with pretty good positioning and game sense, so In the last few weeks I’ve been using these same drills and my air control is SOO much better. I went from not being able to air dribble, to being able to air dribble with air roll and without, very consistently.
Flying around the Pillars map in freeplay is also a great way to practice. Just fly in a figure-8 pattern forward, backward, or with a spin. It's actually quite difficult and helped me a lot.
I’ve been playing for about two years. Made it to platinum without ever learning how to do any of this. Looks like a great way to really hone your game and get that much better. Nothing worse than having to sit on the ground while a dude is having his way with aerials. Thanks for this video!

Thank you! Really cool, just before 8 minutes you say it might be boring. That describes my third visit to SkyVenture, an indoor wind tunnel. I see a lot of players in ranked that could be really good but end up playing bad because they are spinning the second they leave the ground. In most cases this serves no purpose and you can almost always get to the ball faster and get a more accurate touch just flying straight to the ball.

How could I arrange the controls if I want to push into champ but I can’t get over changing boost to r1? I have had game since launch and sit around diamond 2. I have always played with air roll left /right on l1/r1. I have never used free air roll in game rly ever. I can hit ceiling shots, wall shots and such, but have never had that freestyle movement. Everything else is default (circle boost,) I recent rebinded power slide to r1 and like the change. After I watched a couple vids to see what the best controls are I moved my air roll right to L2 per zen video, and it’s fine but makes the half flip more complicated. The main air roll directional on square would be fine, but not using boost on circle and on r1 Is a way crazy change than the power slide one. Should I just fight trough?
A very nicely put together guide, although I have some questions. I play keyboard (no mouse!) and as such find car control really hard to master. I found that I can comfortably do most of the drills mentioned in this video, however, car control still seems beyond me. I find most tutorials useless to me since they all revolve around controller players, and those that are keyboard and mouse just do a poor job of explaining. I guess my question is how do I get good car control with static inputs. I will mention that I know in the long run practice makes prefect, and that I barely do any training. I spend maybe 5 minutes warmup from first opening rocket league and then between matches or waiting for friends, etc. I am currently sitting at the bottom of diamond 3, however my peak is champ 1 division 3, and have consistently been champ before.
ok so i've spent 1800 hours playing on kbm and i do have some opinions. Firstly i do not personally believe that analog input makes a difference in rocket league as compared to static input EXCEPT in one very specific case which is flipping, more specifically speed flipping because you'll start pretty much only speed flipping later on and i would really like to flip only slightly diagonally on kickoff. anyway long story short its mostly the same and you can apply any guide shown in controller to kbm (i assume kbm should be the same for you besides boost and jump so thats only two other keybinds) if you know your keybinds. idrk your rank or your current level of aerials so i cant help you with specific mechanics but yea those are my 2 cents on it.
The greater difference I believe comes from having more than the eight directions that you can get on keyboard while you can go e.g. slightly right on controller which can make for more precise adjustments not only for flipping but also while aerialing in general. However, the fact there's kbm pros out there shows it's not too big of a deal. Grifflicious' take on air rolling which I found very helpful for kbm specifically (although his guide is addressing any input as well) is to learn air rolling with only one other directional input at a time. For example I started with only air roll left + directional left, worked up until I got somewhat comfortable with it and now starting to do air roll left + directional right etc. And im doing like 10 minutes of rings (neon heights) when I start playing, it really pays off (of course you can also do freeplay that way, but do rings if you can). However, being comfortable in the mentioned drills and diamond 3 sounds like car control isn't the bottleneck, if you ask me 🤔
@@WolfmannGames Try out the one directional input at a time method. It works really well for me and I've been struggling with learning air roll for years before trying it that way. I'm also KB only :D
Damn man, you have developed some serious skill. Thank you for this. Haven't played in a while and this is a good video for me to jump right back into the cool maneuvers
Before i watchdd this video i was unranked and dont know anything about air dribble now am kinda cotrolling my air shoots but i was wondering how do u guys rotate the car like that cuz evertime i hit a double tap i hit it but the the. Ball goes up cuz i ddint rotate car right so got any tips abt that?
So, I’m a plat II, and I’m wondering why air-rolling is important? Can’t you just not air-roll until you need it? So why do so many pros use it when not with the ball?
Also, in case anyone’s interested in the air roll on L2 situation. I have my air roll left set as square and since the zen situation I’ve put air roll right on R2 and in my opinion it feels a bit less restricted when I play. Try it out if you’re curious but it does take about a week to get back all the control you previously had
Hi, I'm a C3-GC, wanted to share my experience switching my air roll to LT after watching that video. In a few words, I found it incredibly easy and intuitive compared to most mechs I try to learn. I can actually do rings quicker now than I could before. The only issue is I had to practice trigger discipline on my half flips and recoveries. It was annoying at first, but in the end, I feel like it tightened up my timing in regard to those 2 skills. It forced me to actively work on old skills I had written off. The reason our experiences differed is that I'm learning directional air roll for the first time. My friend who already knows directional air roll tried this and gave up in a day. I could still play my normal game and only had to change a couple habits. I could still air roll with a normal air roll. He, on the other hand, was trying to reteach himself how to aerial each game.
Air roll right on RT doesn't make any sense, you're holding down throttle practically the whole time you're playing, compared to a much lower usage of the brakes on LT
@@omster_ I could see some advantages to having better trigger discipline on RT. Flip resets and jumping off walls/the ceiling for example. Holding acceleration on these surfaces messes with your timings. Another positive is if you're trying to use air roll right after a jump, such as trying to hit balls straight above you, it would save you time from having to let go of one button and hit another. If I learned anything from the LT air roll it's that small adjustments to your input timings make big differences in the consistency of mechs.
Last szn gc3 here, I changed my ARL to left trigger (had them on left bumper) and obviously found it very easy to get the hang of. You have a lot more control over your touches and makes your movement more fluid. Maybe in the lower ranks it doesn't matter as much but here I can tell u that its showing its advantages very quickly
I havent seen this button layout i use the same button map for rolling, i hold x on xbox and use lb and rb, I chose this not knowing why but it works for me.
I am a low gc player who pretty much mastered the basic aerial / basic car control in the air. The best advice I can give to any lower players is that it just takes time and practice.
I like the video. But while almost everything is explaining how to actually get to the next step, I find that the part where you start air rolling is a but short. Seems a little like „yeah, hold air roll and push the stick how ever you like, you’ll get it eventually“ and without even saying that. Would’ve loved more explaining on how to get there since that seems to be one of the hardest parts. All the other parts are clearly explained. You know precisely what to do, so you can focus on getting better at it. I still really do like all your videos ✌️
As a not so mechanical champ 2, I learned to air roll continuously without practicing slight air roll adjustments. DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE. I struggle to make backwards adjustments and there are massive holes in my air roll capabilities.
I feel ya. I'm a not so mechanical c3. I can definitely do the basics. But that's it. When I started playing aka back in my day I was more concerned with game sense and positioning. Now being at c3 3 times now and not being able to push through I see it's my mechanics and ball/car control. I'm sure there's a diamond that can double flip reset musty, and honestly good for you, I can't. I can't even do a single flip reset ( not on purpose ) but yeah this video is going to help ALOT of people!
yeah flying upside down is a whole another thing. im gc1, little bit comfortable with ARL and i can hit cool stuff in freeplay, but bruh... i cant do it in game at all
One question : I consult an other guide who recommand to just use the bottom right part of the joystick to work on the control of the car, he say, it's just too hard to learn first with all the joystick and you can have a pretty good control of your car only use 1/4 of the joystick. He recommand after that to work on 2/4 etc.. What do you think about that? It feel like you can start practice DAR early with this method but you need to train on different part of your joystick and mix all together in long term.
Thanks for the great explanation, I play on PS4 4 and I am diamond 2 div 3 and my biggest weakness is aerial control. Seeing you explain and the drills I am sure will help me tremendously thanks Thanovic!

The main air roll directional on square would be fine, but not using boost on circle and on r1 Is a way crazy change than the power slide one. Should I just fight trough?
just the same as every other aerial guide on youtube - nuff new
yet still a good guide
Dayum dude this helped me how to do aerial thank you!
However, being comfortable in the mentioned drills and diamond 3 sounds like car control isn't the bottleneck, if you ask me 🤔
@@maiorskillsxd6912 im aware of my own limitations lol im just stating my experience with learning to air roll. Thanks tho :)
I actually already do like two of these, and they really work
Thank you as always Brother Than, hope all is well
when i look at the controller overlay i’m like bro what. but the vid is fire and i got it
Can’t wait to try this out thanks thanovic
love it love it love it! thank you Thanovic!
I used boost keybind in circle. Im on PS4
@ThePurpleJOfficialsurely it makes it harder?
that first training pack was the exact same one I used to learn
Same here bro, trigger discipline isn’t really something you think about in the moment and every game is like learning again
These vids are a lot to help. Thx Thano
I'm a gold 3 on my main, but GC on my alt. Trying to get my main acc up to plat this season, thanks for the video.
This is brilliant. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
I have everything down except getting up to speed with the ball can you make a video about that
I havent seen this button layout i use the same button map for rolling, i hold x on xbox and use lb and rb, I chose this not knowing why but it works for me.
Thank you. This week be very helpful. Now if I could just figure out how to speed flip.
This video has me speed flipping consistently ruclips.net/video/33OjnNa8JRY/видео.html
GOATED! This gave me reassurance too I’m not too late to this game :)) !!
How often should we do this and for how long like wouldn’t it take a month or so to fully get it down! Cheers for your great content
very good video im gonna start doing the tutorial starting from tmr
You’re a beast Brodie!
Thanks for video. Very helpful sir. Take care
I can't even do a single flip reset ( not on purpose ) but yeah this video is going to help ALOT of people!
yeah flying upside down is a whole another thing. im gc1, little bit comfortable with ARL and i can hit cool stuff in freeplay, but bruh... i cant do it in game at all
thanovic is a legend
Great video as always. Casual Thano W
Do yall use scufs or similar controllers to play rocket league or no? Just curious and starting out
Thanks for the great explanation, I play on PS4 4 and I am diamond 2 div 3 and my biggest weakness is aerial control. Seeing you explain and the drills I am sure will help me tremendously thanks Thanovic!
how did the drills work for u
did u get any better?
@@remtubem8912 much better, I am hitting more aerials and Champ 2
