US ATACMS missiles are not a panacea, but they will put a strain on Russian air defences, the Telegraph says.
The article says that unlike a conventional cruise missile, ATACMS can travel three times as fast as the sound speed, making them more difficult for air defence systems to intercept. Their speed is the missile's main strength.
Once it is launched, Russia's network of radar and missile detection systems will be triggered almost instantly.
“Once the missile is launched, it takes time to accurately determine its trajectory and where it falls. Basically, all you can do is warn everyone to get down,” said Justin Crump, head of strategic intelligence company Sibylline.
This would put a significant strain on Russian air defence units.
The article said Ukraine's forces would only need ten ATACMS missiles to cover the entire front line and about 250 kilometres behind it.
The U.S. provided Ukraine with powerful long-range ballistic missiles for the first time earlier this month, and its military has already used them twice in the last week against Russian forces, according to three U.S. officials.
The first strike was about inside Crimea’s border on the morning of April 17, targeting a Russian military airfield, according to the officials. The Ukrainian military used the U.S.-provided Army Tactical Missile System, known as ATACMS, for the second time on April 23, targeting Russian forces east of the southeastern Ukrainian town of Berdyansk in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, officials said.
The powerful missiles have a range up to 300 kilometers and allow Ukraine to strike the Russian military throughout Crimea and in occupied parts of eastern Ukraine that had been difficult to reach. The U.S.-provided ATACMS included both warheads with cluster munitions and with unitary blast fragmentation.

They were a critical asset with no replacement. But now the stocks of ATACMS replacement PRSM with a 400+ mile range are sufficient the atacms are no longer critical to the U.S. military.

Those rockets come in many variants. It is not just a simple explosion. Being on the other end will blow the Russian troops mind.
I think a lot of commentators caught the mistake. But stil, it is not launchers, but systems I guess.

Question? Why Ukraine hasn't recieved the ATACMS sooner.
The reason is, The U.S. hasn't manufactured the ATACMS since the 90's.
They number in the hundreds. The facility and equipment used to manufacture them no longer exists.
Thus, because the U.S. doesn't have a lot of them, they couldn't provide them to Ukraine until it's new Precision replacement started production.
Low rate production(like a shake down phase) started a year ago.
Many Republicans have pressured Biden to supply the ATACMS to Ukraine since that low rate production began. The Biden administration refused to provide them until full rate production of it replacement started. That was in March 2024 to the best of my knowledge.
They've since provided Ukraine with around 100 of them so far. They will receive more as production of the replacement ramps up.
That said.
Once the ATACMS are gone, there will be no more.
And Ukraine will not receive the new precision missiles when the ATACMS are gone. Even current U.S. allies won't recieve any of them for a number of years. You never share your latest technology until you have something better to replace it with.
Note: These are impact weapons.
What Ukraine could really use is the German Taurus missiles.
They penetrate the target and detonate from within the target. That's what they really need to take down the Kerch bridge.
