This is how family "dysfunction" (I hate that word but it fits) gets passed on generation after generation. It's not just the bad behavior but the burying and normalizing of family secrets like 'we don't talk about Josh's aberrant behavior.' It takes the Jill's of the world to break the cycle. I hate how the Duggars' educational neglect have cast aspersions on all other homeschooling families. Many families with disabled children have no choice but to homeschool because our kids are never going to be properly accommodated in the public school system, no matter how much we advocate or even sue. The will to educate disabled children is lacking in America (see how quickly disabled kids' education was thrown out the window during the pandemic) and so we do what we must to ensure our kids are properly educated. But not only do we have to put up with an ableist society, we have to put up with people like the Duggars making us look bad.

I homeschool my daughter for the reason you mentioned. I felt like I was fighting for her basic right for an education. I didn’t have the time or money to fight the system so I created a curriculum for her along with her behavioral therapist, doctor, and speech therapist help. She was in public and private school neither were a good fit. Our first year, I worked my but off so I could learn how to teach her. She has ADHD. She’s in gymnastics, swim team with a public school, and we take field trips. The school was suggesting I put her on medication. I told them NO! She was 4 at the time! Her problem was fidgeting and getting distracted during class. She is a completely different child now because I change her diet, home routine, and use natural meds for her. She’s tested well above grade level every year. In the beginning people would question us a lot when we were out during school hours lol 😂. They always asked if we were homeschooling for religious reasons. My answer was always no. She is a happy well rounded child now.

My experience with IBLP families was that the daughters, in particular, often never went beyond algebra I. It wasn't uncommon for the boys to get more math education, because they were expected to get a job to support a family. So a boy might have the education to get his GED, but girls in the same family often did not. There were also plenty of families that felt that the requirements for math in high school were silly and even their boys would be better off getting "apprenticeships" and learning whatever skills they needed on the job. Jim Bob and Michelle are not particularly educated, but I witnessed parents with lots of education, and good jobs to show for it, make these same decisions. My dad used to mention that it didn't make sense to him why these families were not giving their kids a chance at the same education and standard of living that their bachelors and master's degrees afforded them. But my dad grew up in poverty and the idea of setting his kids up to go backwards was insane to him.

His books influenced way more than People than just IBLP churches. I was in an independent nondenominational church which had so many of those same rules. We definitely had some child predators that were exposed later after I left. To this day I am still trying to get rid of things taught to me and I have never joined another church. There are times I wanted to but it makes me nervous. I kind of lost faith in so called leadership. I have said so many times that I believe in God and what Jesus did for us. I just have a problem with his kids…. I got in trouble for wearing pants in church and the leadership pulled my husband at the time aside to have a talk about getting his wife under control.
Now I’m learning and embracing Gods grace. I hate that I am so distrusting about churches. I know that was not Gods design . I know it’s wrong to lump them all together but I do and that’s my protective wall up. Then I feel bad for being judgmental and that I’m not being a good Christian. It’s a mind game in full circle. I am still trying to rid of things in my mind of legalism and embrace Gods grace.

The duggars are trying to keep their kids so sheltered they don’t stray from the iblp. Uneducated people tend to stay with what they know because it’s hard to learn new things and leave what you know when you already struggle with the basics in life. Then if they aren’t educated they are stuck because branching out is harder. It’s kinda like the Amish and why most of the kids stay Amish rather then leave. @@WithoutACrystalBall the boys can’t be any better either then, since the four older girls, (mostly Jessa if I remember right from 19 kids back in the day) were the boys, from the at least Jed and jer down’s teachers, at least until they paid Ben to take over but I don’t think he had a great education either. I hope this documentary helps pass some legislations in the USA about homeschooling regulation. I’m from Australia, education has fell under the national government instead of state since I was in year 6 in 2007, and even long before that when it was state run, homeschooling has and is highly regulated. It’s basically like paying private school money to go to state/public school. You pay the distance education gov organisation and they send out I think monthly units of work for the kids that must be completed and sent back for teachers working for distance Ed to look over, mark and send back feedback with the next unit. These units are based on the same mandatory guides of what all teachers must teach their students in that term and year level. Teachers in class rooms get to pick their theme of the term and mostly how it’s structured, but there is a set expectation of what must be taught each term of each year level. This way no matter how a student is educated, they all know the same things by the same point, even private schools have to follow set guidelines and standards. For big tests homeschoolers even have to go to their nearest state school and take the test with the kids there to make sure proper testing conditions are upheld. Also all kids are guaranteed to have the same knowledge for the same schooling qualifications, like all year 10 certificate holders were taught the exact same stuff, all high school graduates were taught the same knowledge and all high school graduates that sat exams to qualify for uni were taught the same prep work and know the same thing es every other person who earns the same score on the test as them (you need different scores for different uni courses, like to be a doctor you need to get the top score possible, but businesses studies you would only need a very average score). It’s Australia’s way to ensure all children have had the same basic educational opportunities before they choose to enter the work force. I hope the USA can do something similar so that parents who try to do things like the diggers did will end up being charged for not providing education to their children as well as having truant kids, like they would be here.
