I was a big fan of Fantasy Warlord as it allowed for a lot more tactical decisions than Warhammer. It's interesting how many ideas from Fantasy Warlord found their way into Warmaster such as the command tests and brigades.
I home brewed a game nearly like this (without knowing about this game) with cards that you flip over so everyone can move. It works pretty good. I kept the Warhammer lots of dice rolling though because I like rolling lots of dice. Having everyone move, everyone shoot, and everyone melee is pretty fun.
Funnily enough, my wife asked me the other day if I knew if Orc's Nest were still going (we haven't lived in London for a long time). I said I didn't know, but it was pretty much a certainty that they weren't. Glad to hear I was wrong!
Lots of great Gary Chalk art throughout the game. I think I first encountered him as the main artist for Talisman 1e & 2e components - he also did the original 1e Talisman box art
There's an obscure gamebook called Gary Chalk's Gun Dogs, that for some reason is only available as print-on-demand. The original app game with the fully coloured art is sadly no longer available, for whatever reason.
Yeah, Fantasy Warriors was an amazing box set and rule set……. Really gives the feel of being a commander, not an army…. Would love to see you highlight this game (if you havent already).
I bought a copy of these rules back in the day but have never actually tried to play it. I do like the mechanic of hidden orders revealed simultaneously and have used that in homebrew rules before. However, I don't like the limited variance you get systems where you cause automatic damage and only roll for the remainder as a % (reminds me of D&D Swords and Spells from 1977, a stinker of a combat system but a nice try for its time I guess). Buckets of dice and the higher variance (with associated lower probabilities and Gaussian distributions) is a lot more fun IMO, like you get in Warmaster Revolution or the Rampant games. But this is a great piece of history for my collection, and it is SO funny Alternative Armies still carries the figures. I love their stuff and how you can pick up classic figures from them at a reasonable price. Thanks for the video. Never knew about the magazines!
You dont know how happy i was when i walked into the newsagents and saw this badbouy REd Giant mag, how i was ecstatic that someone had the balls to take on GW to try and bring back some diversity and choice in figures, games and manufacturers in this mag, how i hoped the would give the compo needed to takedown the monopolistic evil empire that GW was slowly transforming into. All we need now is a new stab at it, I herby take dibs on GREEN AVERAGE, Lets see how long my new mag lasts. Anyway rant over, i am proud owner of the 2 x red giant mags, and the fantasy warlord magazine, keep them under my pillow!❤
The editorial comments in the second issue of Red Giant probably didn't endear the staff or publication to readers. They were pretty hostile to people pointing out the claim of impartiality when the mag was run by a company promoting their own game. That same issue ran a review of Fantasy Warlord which rated it a 10/10 and the feedback from that would have been interesting. They also were pretty snarky without having earned any right to be so. I believe the majority of the articles were WD leftovers that were brought over. Lots of the art was also recycled from the Lone Wolf books.
All three fantasy books sound interesting to me, I will have to raid any boot sales because people often have no idea what they're selling off. Plus, it'll be cheaper than eBay.

I saw an advert for the Orc's Nest shop in there. They have existed for years and are still there near Covent Garden.

I visited them last year when I was in London. Fantastic shop and I even picked up a t-shirt with that iconic artwork!
I was going to mention that. Not mere years - decades.

Seems worth it for all the cool Gary Chalk artwork. I loved his art in the Lone Wolf chose your own adventure books.

i feel like Oathmark is the final step on all british fantasy wargames. It basically uses the best of all this old school games and makes it right.
The artwork is KILLER!
Gary Chalk art is peak “Oldhammer”. I bought the Cadwallon rulebook from Rackham only for that.
Wild, I just got a copy of Fantasy Warlord in the mail last week. The rules were a bit bewildering at first glance but the artwork was great!
that's one i hadn't heard of before. Fascinating. I actually find the combat resolution kinda intriguing. :D

Yeah it is in my oppinion the best tabletop wargame ever made, and units wasn’t just cannon fodder, and characters wasn’t super heroes.
You should post a playthrough.. in sure many would be interested

I would like to see a game of this!
I loved Battlecars and the expansion Battlebikes so hooray for Gary Chalk a known but underrated illustrator and game designer
That was a nice look at the wargaming past. Sounds like a pretty interesting game, might try giving it a go sometime.
You have a pleasant voice and good even cadence.
Mmmm oldschool. My morning needed that.

I still own the Fantasy Warlord book! We never played it. All my mates only wanted to play Warhammer.
I remember reading a comment by someone at the time that 'Vortimax' sounded like a breakfast cereal.
Amazing

The terrible things that "disgruntled ex employees" do these days. But back in 1990, they published a magazine and a fantasy wargame instead!

I noticed you changed back to old hammered.. But where have alot of the newer videos gone? Like the marauder mini video?
They'll be reposted in the near future. We wanted to have consistent labeling on everything.
