Hey it's Andy with ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com, today we're visiting the kingdom of the Katzenkönig, from our friends at Catalinbread. The Katzenkönig is a distortion/fuzz hybrid that takes the guts from two beloved dirt boxes-the Tone Bender MkII and the RAT-and scrambles them together in the most pleasing ways. The pedal begins with an Input sensitivity knob which decides how much signal is fed into the gears of the Tone Bender, so it acts as a second guitar volume knob to help cleanup the signal or tighten up humbuckers. The gain (2nd stage) controls the negative feedback which gives you usable setting across the whole range, even all the way down. The Filter knob that everyone knows from the RAT circuit received a serious facelift, and is now useful throughout the full range of motion. You'll find the Gain and Input to be highly interactive and able to dial up sparkling medium-gain overdrive, wooly distortion or ultra-saturated, amp dissolving fuzz when cranked. The Katzenkönig is outfitted with royal components like all Catalinbread pedals, and is hand-built with loving care in Portland, Oregon.
Playing the Rover with this basically sells it to me.
Right ?
Same
Would go nicely with the RAH
Also the Stooges. Thats an amazing song
Same here!
ooohh, nice! always nice to hear Zeppelin played so well, once again Andy kills it
This guy produces the best, concise demo vids. I really like his formulaic approach.
Andy, you freaking nailed that guitar solo. You rule, brother!
I love how everyone plays Search and Destroy differently
Ahhh,.. The Rover!
he makes it look so easy
+Neal Mayborn The song isn't really that hard to play. The solo is the challenging part.
You got me rocking when I ought to be a-rolling
Darling, tell me, darling, which way to go
You keep me rocking, baby, then you keep me stolen
Won't you tell me, darling, which way to go, that's right
I'm just sitting here listening to the Stooges at the end over and over. That tone is my holy grail.
What song is that, I need to know.
Search and Destroy
Seeing this for the first time in the last days of 2019, dang... How did I miss this gem? Great demo as always, I need this in my life
*SEARCH & DESTROY* yesss one of my all time favorite songs! I love the Stooges, Raw Power's one of the greatest rock albums ever
Agreed. Of course, I’ve likely been saying this since before you were even born.
Rover one of my all fav zep tunes, awesome playing cool pedal
+Edad Martin I'd like to see him tackle "For Your Life."
1:00 first guitar face I've ever seen from Andy
This is a great pedal, once you have spent a bit of time with it you will love it more and more!
That little smirk at the 1:00 mark, Andy even amazes himself!'
What was supposedly amazing?
RP225 that Zep riff
What’s not amazing I’ve never seen him play without total feel and in the pocket which he manages to do without a backing track or a pick. Id choose a guitar lesson from him over any pedal any day. its at the point now where i actually watch other channels because good players can make a shitbox sound great.
You know Andy has one kick ass cover band back home!
5:21 that smile. He's enjoing it ! :D
Sounds amazing, all hail the Katzenkönig.
There can be no denying.......Andy channeling his inner Jimmy. I save a lot of these and learn different(right) ways of playing these songs. The pedals are cool too. Thanks again Andy.
The Iggy and the Stooges was spot on. Great pedal. Love Les Pauls.
Love the Madras shirt... I grew up there right where they made these kinda shirts... now called Chennai.
great midrange bite!
Andys been playin the rover since he was 10 !!!
This is one of the ballsiest pedals I've ever owned, it's really punchy too. If you are unsure about getting it, get it. One slight word of warning is that it's pretty noise when on due to the vintage style circuit so if you don't dig extemporaneous noise may it isn't for you. Catalinbread always does it right.
How much noise are we talking here? that's what's keeping me from getting the pedal.
With a silicon front end, does it play nicely with a buffered pedal in front of it? How about with a wah?
@@Beizeiten78 i use it with Dunlop Cry Baby, everything sounds amazing!
The Cat King killed the Rat. The artwork tells its tone.
Nice to hear 'The Rover' by Led Zeppelin. No there's a song that doesn't get enough attention
Damn, the tone he gets out the Tele. Grail.
crazy early page tone ---killed it , pedal rocks
Holy shit some serious tones coming out of that
As soon as he started playing Search and Destroy, I knew I must have it.
Awesome playin here
The Rover just sold this pedal...
While I also believe Andy could sell used sweat socks with his playing, this pedal really sounds killer. :D
Go Andy, Go! You do great playing Zeppelin. The Cat King sounds so good, too. I hope I can score one of these pedals soon.
Sounds fantastic, Catalinbread has really been offering up some killer pedals as of late. But the graphics/art work sure don't match how killer they are on the inside. Sabbra Caddara, RAH and a couple of others are cool and thankfully the custom painted ones they were doing are history. I guess at the end of the day it could be just a plain steel box , it's what it sounds like and does that matters...but i sure hope they keep trying to address the art work like Keeley has started to do....
+Edward Rudy From the feedback I've heard, you seem to be in the minority with that opinion. Personally I think they all look cool, with the Echorec, Zero Point, and now this one being favourites.
Fair enough, it wouldn't be the first time i was in the minority speaking. I love Catalinbread pedals, i'm just not much for the art work on most of them...it hasn't stop me from buying them...
+Edward Rudy actually I agree with you. I generally dislike pedals with over done, busy graphics... it's too much going on for such a small space. But yeah, "it's whats on the inside that counts."
The video sound is pretty good, beyond my imagination
has a cat on it,
i'll buy it.
Perfect rover pedal
Great job. Pagey couldn't even play it the same way twice.
great pedal and playing as always
Andy's Strat looks like it's played 15,000 shows in the last month! Maybe it's just me, but I don't remember it being anywhere near that relic'd.
This may be the ultimate drive pedal.
Nice to see how "search & destroy" can be brutal and refined at the same time : it sounds like a good definition of what "hard rock" should mean...
Well done mate!!
I really don't like Strats. I want that black Redtail Strat. That thing is gorgeous. Between that, THE Les Paul, the Redtail Tele, his Reverends, and the black Hagstrom, Andy has the best guitars on the Internet. He wins.
I'd take Dan's (That Pedal Show) tele over any of Andy's guitars.
Power amp distortion! Input sensitivity! driving the gainstage! maybe worth a video on it Andy?
Sounds to die for. By the truckload. I am in awe. Plus, just like wgb01001, I too don't like Strats very much but that sound from 1:41 onwards is... I don't know ... godly?! I think I will have to save up for another pedal... Katzenkönig, here I come!
BTW: What amp/cabinet is Andy using? Does anyone know? Need to know! Really! Please!
Andy, love your playing, man. Is there a song you DON'T know?
Ah ... the "Katzenkönig" can be "Kratzenkönig" too when pushed ... very nice!
Good demo, thanks.
It's called the "Cat King" because it's a Rat killer.
OFMG.. this playing.
I know it's a few bucks but mannn, that is one great sounding dirt box!
Mighty fine playing pedal sounds pretty good do I need it probably not do I want it your damn right I do
It's good enough for Bill Frisell!
I wonder if the image of the dead rat is supposed to symbolize that this pedal has rendered the Rat pedal obsolete
I think I might need to have this....
Noisy! But I definitely recommend it, getting amazing tones out of this baby.
This thing sounds so freaking Frusciante for some reason. I love it.
Yeah I'm buying it lol
Great pedal Can't decide on this or the Karma Suture
When will Rebecca Dirks be returning for the daily video news?
Iggy!!! Loves me some stooges
Wow Search
And Destroy sounds awesome. Want the pedal but guy playing it wasn't doing bad either.
Hey, I love your demos. Two questions :
You think this might be worth a shot for a zztop gibbons kinda sound ?
How does it react to a buffer ? can I place it behind a buffered Fulltone wah ?
Now its 3 questions :D
Man I see you everywhere. I don't have to tell you how good you are, I think you already know. Are you self taught or did you take lessons???
Sorry, I can't figure out what the song is around 2:50 Any ideas, YT?
+SolidSmashies Andy original?
outstanding
Killer tone! What IS that song at 2:50? I gotta know!!
He responded in some other comment that he made that riff up himself-
are any of you owners also owners of RATs (1980s) and tone benders? would love to hear a second opinion. i hear andy say its a blending of the two, but i'm not hearing that 'fizzle' in the mids that those pedals give. love the low end on this thing though.
awesome
I love my rat, but find that I can't turn the gain past 1 o clock or I'll get nasty compression. I've always wanted a fuzz pedal, so this may be the one I've been dreaming of.
This pedal is great, try the E.harmonix Triangle one off the best
What amp are you playing through? This pedal is my dream woman.
Lo quieroooo!!!!!
Andy is literally god
What's that riff around 2:55?
did you find an answer? I'm starting to think it's his own stuff
Hi guys of PGSD I am a beginner and wonder if you can help on this: I was running a catalinbread dirty little secret with a 9v adapter 0.5Amps. With the negative outside and positive inside. Is this correct? Or this can damage something in the circuit? The Dirty little secret is ok but have a smell of something reheated. All knobs functions well. The sound ok too. I changed to a boss psa120 adapter and still ok with the unit.
cool
I wonder how this would sound with an 8-string, and some complex jazz chords...?
Search Andy Destroy
Great. Now I need one of these, too.
On a side note - does anyone know what Andy plays at 2:52? Sounds familiar, but I can't put my finger on it.
Thanks, I wasn't playing anything specific!
Andy
@@ProGuitarShopDemos thanks Andy! This SHOULD be incorporated into a song, though. Sounds killer!
One of the noisiest pedals I have ever purchased. No way there isn't a noise gate or RXing in post edit... If you want your tone to sound like a shop vac, this pedal is for you!
Hey Bob, this pedal is known to be a bit hissy but I've never ever used a noise gate in my demos. If you play loud enough and get a good strong signal to your recording gear, it rarely picks up on the microphone. Plus, that all disappears in a band mix.
Andy
@@ProGuitarShopDemos Hi Andy! Sorry to be so negative about this pedal. My test was clean tone on a Mesa 5:25, single coil Strat/bridge position. The Katz was 12 o'clock on all but the input (that was all the way down), stand-alone, straight into my amp. I compared against my KoT (gain maxed out on 2 channels even) and my Millie Fuzz, and the hiss/added noise was significantly louder than either. I wonder if I put this in an insulated amp cabinet, crank it and mic with my ribbon, if it would record better/cleaner. I really want to love this pedal. The tone (less the hiss) is outstanding. I get it that this is based on old circuits and noise is a byproduct. Any other input or tips you have for making this good to record with would be appreciated.
Thanks for your response and for all the great demos you guys do!!!
Bob
@@808owens No problem, I find that noise always sounds worse in person than on record. Brian May's live setup is extremely noisy if you've seen his rig rundown. I do think that playing fairly loud helps, my Deluxe is always about 3-4 on the vol. You're setting is close to the 2nd example and I even have the input hotter. Best of luck!
@@ProGuitarShopDemos Thanks again!!! I'm probably over scrutinizing this, when often (like you said) it just washes out in the mix. I should just shut up and lay down some tracks :)
But does it Doom?
Much better than the cat rat tail
Anyone noticed the invisible pick!
this? or the wren caprid ? or the squarewave generator ?
Hearing some Frustiante, which song?
I am the world's forgotten boy.
💙
Somebody buy that man a new shirt!
I just bought this and I am having a really hard time dialing in any of the sounds you got through this on my VOX AC15 on clean with stratocaster. Sounds way too shrill and fuzzy for me even with all the settings down and with the settings in the video, I don't get the same sound. Will a compressor help?
That is because u are playing an AC amp. They are the most sensitive amp when it comes to taking a dirt pedal. Good luck in finding one that sounds good, there are tons of forums on the web that talk about it,
Finniganmydog Agreed! If you're still looking, try the Pharaoh Supreme by Black Arts Toneworks. Plays very nicely in front of every AC I've been lucky enough to try, especially with single-coils. Never leaves my board...
I returned it, wasn't my style. I prefer my analog man ts9 maybe I'll get a prince of tone. Maybe I'll get the amp modified and put a new speaker in.
You should've taken advantage and run it at 18v to get more headroom
+Philip Taylor More headroom doesn't necessarily better tho.
who needs headroom when you want that nasty bacon maple syrup fuzz
does it work with bass?
5:19
If we could just join hands.
You can’t play live with this pedal… one of the best sounding boxes ever.. but you can’t play a note live with it.. sorry.. an excellent recording tool.
Why?
Noisy!!! They made a new version, the blood donnor.. less noise.
With a noise gate you can play it live.. but.. 🤷🏻♂️
LMAO I also demo'd this pedal by playing search and destroy
Search and Destroy, bitches!!!
Now the question on everyone's mind, and by everyone I mean just me, what does Katzenkönig mean in German? Is it just some made up word that doesn't actually mean anything? If it isn't actually German, but instead is a different language from that general area of Europe, then feel free to insult me in that language.
Cat King .......a RAT killer? ;-)
I thought I did
The weird thing is fuzzrocious just changed the name of their Rat King pedal to Cat King for copyright reasons or something. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Wow, cool story! Vielen dank, mein freund!
zeppelin
Is it me, or is this the first time Andy has repeated himself? I know he's played Search and Destroy before, but has he ever played another song twice?
Makes me want to hide my custom bigmuff in the closet.
why did they give it a german name?
Sounds cool
Andy quit playing zep with these pedals i only have so much $$$$$$$$$
hnnnng
