There is a lot of encounters that force the game to have no portals. It does add a lot of variety.

Is that within the context of patient study?
His augment giving xp, plus exalted giving xp. With the increased player health and accelerated xp gain Mort was in a position where he doesn’t need to roll for power at earlier levels, and thus can fast 9

Yeah the only thing that prevents leveling is player health. It forces you to roll or you lose. Tons of health allows you to be weaker for longer.

Emblems aren’t rare this sett though? You can almost guarantee one every game
Firstly, you can mostly guarantee one, but not necessarily the one you are looking for / the one that wins you the game.
Secondly, one is almost never enough to guarantee a win. You need 2+ of the same trait for emblems to be a game changer.

Pivoting too much can be an issue too. Playing your strongest board even with 1 stars helps you live long enough to roll more.
