Coming from a railroad family of 3 generations, this is an interesting creation. For a first-time build, it covers most of the bases.
For version 2.0, I have a few suggestions:
    1. Upgrade the wheels with a thicker inner flange. You'd be surprise how quickly they grind-down, and your flanges look rather thin to start with, on the front wheels. Buying a used set of hi rail wheels, would be a considerable improvement. In addition, add a heavy leather or rubber deflection shield, just ahead of each of the wheels in-front. It will brush-off most small debris, like rocks & small twigs, to help avoid any unnecessary derailments.
    2. I would change those seats out with something with more of a cushion or air ride. Train tracks are not smooth, especially the abandoned variety. Joint rail, flat spots, etc.… can make for a very rough ride.
    3. I would also consider upgrading the engine to a 4-cycle type, with a muffler. They’re smoother running and offer a little more ‘tractive’ power.
    4. Adding a small generator or alternator, which runs off the engine, would also provide options in-terms of electrical accessories.
    5. 12-volt light-weight pump & hydraulic piston, attached to a flat 2’x2’piece of ¼” steel will work as a great lift, when turning the unit around.
    6. Down the road, perhaps a fold-down canopy or a large umbrella, like those used on road construction equipment, would provide a shield from the sun. Maybe even a fold-down plexiglass windshield, to deflect small brush & bugs.
    7. As for lighting, I would opt for two head lights, mounted higher, with ditch lights below. It offers considerably more lighting, for nighttime runs. Two taillights would also be preferred, for greater visibility.
    8. A lot of railfans like to have a 2-way radio as well, for safety sake. C.B., Amateur, MURS, FRS or GMRS - there are a lot of options out there.
    9. Add a First Aid Kit & Fire Extinguisher
As with all railfanning adventures, stay away from active train tracks, even those with infrequent use. In addition to the dangers, there’s also the legal ramifications. In the U.S., railfans caught on railroad property, have not met with open mindedness, by Law Enforcement, Rail Cops, or Homeland Security. Other than that, have fun!

  • @CurtisDrew1
    @CurtisDrew1 2 года назад +1

DId you build it with just a friction clutch or does it have a CV transmission? CV transmissions would make that thing pretty efficient and easy to get moving from a dead start. Was really impressed with the roundhouse post.
I built my grand kids a go kart that is a 5/8 scale copy of my yard truck side by side )A Brister) and it would be perfect to make into a rail cart, but it easn't so small in the seat area. It can seat adults, but the roll cage makes it a head bumper for tall adults. It's top speed was 40 mph before I geared it down.
    Nice Job Little Brother!
Just had a wild though of adding some drop down trolly rail wheels to my yard truck. It would be perfect with the wide tires, gearing and rear dump bed. But all the tracks near me are still active. Coal Trains keep the rails polished... Just what I =need, another porject to build!!!!!

now to make a really cool video would be to hoock a long rope on a passing train and let it tow a trail bike but five times the speed is it too much to handle , speed wobble, could it be designed for it , maybe rubber in rope for easy start , risk of stepping into rope loop , helmet , armour , ejection seat, parachute , airbags for falling to side, paddings or air filled , even a safety cage or shell, but detachable from bike. how about a giant ball rolling o the tracks , pulled by train. ball of branches or plastic or rods pipes. and guy inside. or like could use an old car pulled behind w normal wheels on side of trracks or no rubber and iron wheels on track , but rubber coating inside them. or rope and parachute fly benind train. any of those ideas can be very dangerous but some might be rather safe maybe if well designed and done. some choose some danger risk for fun, its popular on youtube like skydiving . er

GX 160 is a Lawn Mower Engine from a self-propelled Honda. The Mower travels at 3 MPH. The embarassment here, is that the Home Made Buggy travels at 3MPH. That's why there is no images of this in motion. Also missing from this build, is the Case of Beer to drink whilst you are seeing the Countryside and Nature. Oh! and no toilet on board.

Not all tracks with rust on it are completely deserted. There might incidently go a diesel loc over it in special cases. Better have a proper information source that it is deserted.
