    Bykski now has an Active Backplate cooler as well. Meaning a nickel plate block that goes on the back of a 3080/3090 as well as the front. Good looking and good for cards with back side memory chips: amzn.to/2R8wYmi

      VERY interesting, thanks for the heads up! I have a GIGABYTE 3090 and I just got my bykski set, but I wasn't ware of the active backplate. Since I game AND mine (to make back what I spent on the GPU - I got it at MSRP, and that was still obscenely expensive!) VRAM back side temps is a major issue.
      I'll have to see whether I can get the backplate on its own from aliexpress. ALSO: I wonder whether I have to get a gigabyte compatibile backplate.

    • @MandicReally
      @MandicReally  3 года назад

      @@rather-reverend I don't think you will have to get a gigabyte specific backplate. That is just a guess but the majority of my 3080 anyway is pretty similar to reference design. It is just those power connectors that are not. And while the backplate I have has a cut out for those power connectors, it actually doesn't need to since the connectors are on the front side of the card.

    That "better machining" on the VRM blocks are fly cutter marks - big broad-area cutter. That would've been the top of the machined piece, and it's one consistent cut over the whole part that buzzes the whole surface at once. The rougher marks in the lower areas is inconsistent speeds with an endmill. So it's not "better" in that it was done to a higher quality or anything, just a far simpler cut to do.

    I looked up RUclips what the experience is with water-cooling a 3080 just out of curiosity and your video was surprisingly well put together and answered all my questions. Good content! I already thought coming into this that watercooling a 3080 likely not worth it, and I see that's confirmed, it's more of a cool factor or just to see if you can type of thing and if you got the extra money to throw away. You can shunt mod the high hash rate 3080 8+8 pin and use a custom BIOS to unlock it's power limits quite a bit. I forget what the 2 accomplish. But it went from 320 watts up to 360 watts (if I recall). I believe at 1440p and 4K benchmarks the guy was gaining 10-14 fps in games. (Not sure in production). He was running it on air too. So imagine your waterblock.
    You could see an uplift of 20 fps in gaming and much better performance in production software. However..... The time, effort, money for parts etc, you may as well sell your 3080 and buy a 7900XT(X) or a 4080 16GB.

    • @MandicReally

      I went to a 3090ti a bit ago. Reliable performance is more important as this is primarily a work computer. The only real reason I even moved to the 3090ti isn’t the performance gain but rather the memory. This 3080 10g was running out of VRAM and crashing while decoding H.265 5.8k video. The 3090ti doesn’t even break a sweat while using over 16GB of VRAM.

    Really good video. 1 little detail: the big issue on the 3080/90 is the vram temp, not so much gpu. On my 3080 i was all comfy with 60ish °C, then I found out that on some games my vram was hitting 98°C. Wouldve been nice to tell difference there aswell with this particular block.

      There are two problems with the VRAMs - bad thermal pads and no thermal pads on the backplate side. The best test was actually mining ETH. Before - 110°C and thermal throttling, after replacing old thermal pads and putting new between backplate - 96°C (+750 MHz on MEM) at 27-ish °C ambient. While gaming they don't go above 90°C anymore.

    I posted an earlier comment but I think the included link to a diagram about my question, so it might have been automodded. If you intentionally removed my comment, I apologize!
    In any case, I purchased a 3090 with an AIO already attached. The waterblock is identical to the one you have shown here. However, there are some discrepancies. The person I purchased the block off of had thermal pads installed in the grooves of the water block (above the voltage regulators). I noticed the stock cooler in your teardown also had thermal pads on these voltage regulators, but did not install them on the waterblock. Are they truly not required with this water block?
    The previous owner also installed thermal pads along a bunch of the grooves on the backplate. Were any present in your install? I realize I will have to use 2mm pads for the additional memory chips on the back of the 3090, but were there any pads on the backplate of yours?
    Cheers and thanks in advance

      This block didn’t come with any pads for the backplate or for those chokes you are referencing. This was about as early of a block release as there was. I’ve been wanting to disassemble it and reinstall with thermal
      Pads in those locations to see how much of a difference it makes. My 3080 doesn’t have backside RAM chips so that will likely be marginal, but your 3090 you should absolutely use them. Or consider the active backplate even.

    I have the same card. Just ordered a custom loop for gpu only. 280mm x 45mm thich rad and good pump/reservoir. My card gets about 70-72 on air with fanspeed at 62%.
    -It really is possible to undervolt this card with latest msi afterburner. I did it with 1950mhz and 500mhz on mem@ 975mv. It is an overclock and undervolt at the same time. But results vary by card and bios.
    I am really interested to get this card in the 50s celcius range but with lowest possible fanspeed for good silent noise as the gpu is the only thing now making noticeable noise at full load.
    Tested a game like marvels avengers which pushes the card at 99/100% most of the time. On air I get 72c with 62%fan speed. So my goal is to reduce the temps down to 50's something. My rad is alphacool xt45. Which is 45mm thick. But now I see that the wateblock from bykski is not that good. But I still have some hopes to reduce temps down with lower or similar noise. I really cannot say long term how it is / will be. However my card has been running smoothly and happily since install. I recently installed a 5950X and brought the cooling system load up overall and the GPU still sits happily and stable at the temps I quoted here. I have been meaning to flash a higher wattage bios on the card, and wonder if that won't show some weak points, but I haven't had time to do that properly / test it so I have held off. The lack of cooling for all the components cooled by factory is mildly concerning to me, so I may eventually switch blocks, but for the moment I'm satisfied.

    Even going from 12 cores to 8 cores, the (much) faster clocks on the 5800X made up the difference when compiling large programs. At full throttle the 3900X would cap out at 3.99Ghz all cores, while the 5800X is at 4.6-4.8Ghz all cores depending on the temps in the room.
    Running this on air cooler (Noctua NHD15).
    I think it helps that my 5800X is apparently a golden sample according to Ryzen clock tuner.

    I really closer to pulling the trigger for my 3080 Eva edition, but I really want the one with the active backplate...
    Looking back now how's this system block performing?

    • @MandicReally
      @MandicReally  2 года назад +1

      I never ran into any cooling issues in anyway. I just took this card & block out last week for a 3090Ti, but never had any issues. I didn't watch memory temps like a hawk, but never saw any throttling in any of my testing.
      If you are not running a 3090 (non-Ti) an active backplate is overkill I think. The 3080 & 3090Ti don't have back memory chips that need cooling. To add a little cooling you could always put some thermal pads behind the memory chips on the passive backplate. I had intended to do that but am just going to sell my Card with the block most likely now.

      @@MandicReally thanks so much for the reply.
      My thought process as well, but I'm also going for a bit for enthusiasm as well, I may do two EKWB flt120 with different coloured loops rather than 1 flt360. Or invest in a double sided waterblock.
      So I'm thinking of either going EKWB one sided or Bykski Double sided.... Only because they are the same price here in Canada.... 369$ for EKWB Velocity and 349$ for the Bykski Sandwiched.

      Hour of Unigine looping they hit 80C. I’m going to be applying thermal pads to the back of the card to see if the backplate helps any. Then flashing the BIOS to a higher wattage one (I’ve discovered this card is a 330W bios) and see what happens. Look for a video soon.

    Warranty void?

    • @MandicReally
      @MandicReally  3 года назад

      Not for me no. We are allowed to work on and repair our electronics, if it causes a failure then it voids the warranty. So a water leak would, sure. Otherwise, no they cannot void my warranty just for swapping the cooler. Doesn't mean they won't or find some other way to deny it, but legally just doing this doesn't void the warranty, no.

      What combination do you run? Ryzen 5000 series were very difficult to get when I put this setup together so I didn't upgrade from the CPU I've had for years. Would you pass up the oppurtunity to buy a 3080 for $800 becuase "The CPU combo would be stupid"? Or just get it and upgrade CPU later? The GPU isn't bottlenecked by the CPU. Sure a better CPU would pick up more perofmrance of course but the GPU isn't being throttled by the CPU. If you think it is you need to learn a lot more about what Bottlenecking really is.

      Currently I’ve decided on waiting for the Zen 3 Threadripper CPUs to launch. So again, spending $4-800 to upgrade now doesn’t make sense if I know my setup works well enough for now and a new upgrade is out there on the horizon.
