Karipap is our way of saying “curry puff”..there’s another name for it which is “epok epok”..so what you eating is basically pastry filled with potato curry. We also have other fillings like sambal paste sardines. Whether it’s nice or not, depends on where you buy it. Some stalls fry their curry puffs early in the morning so by noon it will become cold and lose its crispiness. A good curry puff is the ones that are hot from the stove. It should be as crispy as lumpia
as a fellow singaporean, your reviews and your genuine reaction to the food made my day. hope Judy enjoys them as much as you did! have a great time here!
Maxwell has everything! Happy you got to experience our local hawker & I'm so happy I got to meet Judy and you @ the meet and greet. Hopefully, the girls can visit Singapore one day too! X
That thick black sauce for the chicken is not oyster sauce nor hoisin sauce. It’s straight up THiCC Dark Soy Sauce. The “ garlic “ sauce is actually ginger sauce. You could add green onion / shallots / garlic to kick it up a notch. 😊
Carrot cake is named as such because it has radish in it (radish is called 'white carrot' in Mandarin). Also the curry puff you had has a mix of chicken, potato, onions in curry paste. If you loved the iced milo, next time you've got to try the milo dinosaur, or godzilla!
Benji, soo happy to see you in Singapore! My mom is from there and we just got back from a trip the end of this summer. More MUST try dishes that SG is known for, Chili Crab (the other national dish next to Chicken Rice), Laksa & Satay! That fried dough thing you got was actually a curry puff (which didnt look as good as it was not stuffed, definitely try a different stall, Maxwells has one that is very popular but unfortunately I cant remember the name.) And while youre in the airport on the way back, you MUST get some Bak Kwa, its like an asian jerkey! they have a few stores in Changi Airport. Nothing like it in the states.
The chicken is actually poached, not steamed. After it is cooked, its is then dunk into ice water to stop the cooking process. That is why it is serve cold.
We use fork & spoon to eat rice... that is ginger sauce for the chicken rice, not garlic 😅... the dark soya sauce is usually drizzled over the rice That black coffee is kopi-o, will be kopi-o kosong if no sugar 😊 You do not have to keep going back to Maxwell Food Centre as there is the largest food centre, Chinatown Complex Food Centre nearby. Radish in chinese translates to carrot, thus the name 'carrot cake'.
I loved trying food at the Maxwell food center as well! Next time i visit I’ll definitely try the “carrot cake” haha. Also I think the guy was trying to tell you it’s a curry puff, not “corry pop” lol. That’s very popular in south Asian culture!
If you are keen on trying malay cuisine in singapore, you can try dishes like long tong, mee siam, mee rebus, mee soto! It has interesting flavour profile. :)
Hope you enjoyed your time in Singapore and so glad you’re open to try all the different variety of food our tiny city offers! the truly local experience! 😊
I love Singapore! One if my favorite Country and I keep coming back there. You should come back and try other hawker centers. There’s so much good food to explore. Missing Singapore already
The yellow stuff with the Chicken rice is ginger... minced ginger... And its called locally as sugar cane... not cane suger... Try it with added Lemon juice or Plum juice... It better. Curry puff is considered as a pastry. Its can be filled with potatoes+carrots cooked in curry... Or sardine... Or whatever the owner can think of... And you can have beer day or night from 7am till 10:30pm in public. No one would judge you if you have a beer instead of coffee in the morning.
Try the Tian Tian Chicken Rice that is the popular Chicken Rice in maxwell. Then try the Oyster cake in Maxwell as well. Beancurd from Lao Ban all in maxwell.
Loved this video Benji.... We get to learn a lot seeing your videos....Can't wait to try your recommendations the next time I visit Singapore... Hopefully you filmed a lot more food vlogs in Singapore :).
Karepap is their version of the karepan. I love that in SG. Also, Iced Milo is available in 7-Eleven here. Should have tried Milo Dinosaur. The “garlic” thingee is actually Ginger.
Good Job Benji on going to Maxwell food centre! Appreciate your bravery and willingness to explore and try new things🫶🏼Hope you had a great experience!
8:30 funny that you mentioned starbucks. because starbucks coffee is nothing compared to real coffee. also if you go to vietnam, they have a really big coffee culture. if you try their coffee you might not want anymore starbucks. you'll find a lot of singaporean and malaysian dishes are the same or similar because of their history together. singapore was part of malaysia until the 1960s, so same food, culture, racial composition. many similar food & desserts can be found in indonesia as well, because of the cultural exchange and assimilation. like the karipap you had.
The sauce with the chicken rice is actually dark soy. Whilst regular soy adds flavour, dark soy is typically used to add colour to cooking. The other condiments are ground ginger, and a chili lime dip.
Benji you should try making Hainanese chicken at home! I use the chicken thighs with bones + skin from Costco and you use everything from the chicken. You also cook the rice with the broth.
Welcome to our sunny island Singapore! Hope you and your wife have a pleasant stay here. There are many good foods at Maxwell market! You should try the Tian Tian chicken rice , it’s always long queue! I would also like to recommend oyster puff ! It’s very nice and must eat it while it’s hot and crispy. Really love to watch your vlog on this . Thanks for coming to Singapore ❤
u look at ginger and u call it garlic, u taste ginger and u still called it garlic. how to trust your taste la aiyo. also grab a spoon for a rice dish in Asia... not chopsticks and ending up with just a fork
Lol, I went to a South Asian wedding and if there’s no assigned seating you need to tip your chair to reserve it otherwise someone will take it. It doesn’t matter if you have your phone, purse, jacket, or even a tissue paper, someone will take it because it’s not tipped over. I didn’t believe my friend and people took our seats except for my friend’s. So we had to eat on a small couch with a sofa table.
Chopsticks is when we eat noodles or when we have rice in rice bowls and dishes separately. For chicken rice on a plate we usually eat with fork and spoon. Push the fork onto your spoon with your rice. Westerners always use fork for rice (you hv grains slipping out between) when there is a spoon provided.😂 that's ginger paste not garlic
Mix sugarcane juice with coconut juice. Because sugarcane is pure sugar it’s not really going to help hydrate you. The coconut juice is supposed to help hydrate you.
Omg so that's where those tissue packs are from xD. I only got to stay in Singapore for a couple days but I had some of THE best food. The popiah at maxwell food centre was one of my highlights. Edit: there are other amazing food courts around chinatown too.
New to Asia? Some of the things you said killed ms but love how positive and open minded you were. Just a piece of advice…don’t put your straw or utensils on your food tray, it isn’t clean. If you were given a bowl of rice, yes you would use chopsticks but you had a plate so fork and spoon. We are rather cosmopolitan and have adopted accordingly.
Milo is an Australian invention BUT every country have their own formula. Australian is more milky. Singapore is more malty Malaysia is more chocolatey AND more sweet. Taiwan is more bland. Many more other countries I have not tried....
Benji, not all asian countries uses chopsticks. The only asian countries I know of uses chopsticks is China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Korea
You can’t go wrong with Maxwell’s Hawker Centre! 😋 It’s the heart of Singapore’s street food scene-delicious, affordable, and authentic!
erm... did u just rename Maxwell to Maxwell's?!
@@riptide101 could be auto correct
Are you the official site? Note that it should be Maxwell & not Maxwell's.
@@sentou2353 but that's the official visit Singapore account.... there shouldn't be 'auto' anything

Thank you.

Carrot cake is called carrot because in Mandarin," bai luo bo" or "white carrot" means radish.
So cool I heard of Singapore noodles! All Asian countries are so similar! I love sugar cane juice try it with lemon and ginger!
The sauce with the chicken rice is actually dark soy. Whilst regular soy adds flavour, dark soy is typically used to add colour to cooking. The other condiments are ground ginger, and a chili lime dip.
if you are looking for dessert you can try out cendol, ice kacang & bo bo cha cha. Singapore food are mostly sweet.
u should do asia country food travel. its always more interesting
South indian filter coffee is so good! Taste like chocolate it's a dark brew too with chicory!
Benji you are eating you way through Singapore like you're Anthony Bourdain! ❤😂
Go to Old airport food center! Soooo much better!
Wow. You travel back and forth with no worry about long flights lol
Adding lemon to sugar cane juice will make it more refreshing and nice for the weather in Singapore here.
In Cantonese, radish is called "white carrot" which is why I assume they named it carrot cake, looks delish!
You should try making Hainan chicken with ginger scallion sauce and cup of chicken broth on the side. Super easy!
19:58, the Benji I love this food 👀
So delicious.
Come to indonesia we have much cane sugar here
Thank you for coming to SG and liking our hawker food
We call that Epok-Epok or Curry Puff here in Singapore.
So happy you’re showing maxwells that’s my favourite 😮

Welcome to Singapore, Judy and Benji. Our local chicken rice is a must try. The condiments are chilli, ginger and sweet black sauce. 😊

Hahaha Benji, the food name is already in english "Curry Puff" 😂😂
I think he thinks it’s “curry pop”😅
I love white carrot cake❤
Some older folks in sg here call them "Kali pok". Probably because they can't pronounce "curry puff" in English 😅
Go Benji Go Benji Go!
Love the travel vlogs!
Glad you like them!
Benji please get your shaking checked - it’s noticeable
I mentioned this some time ago. Now, ir's even more noticeable. Get it checked ASAP Benji.
Hi Benji, I think that’s ginger sauce/oil.
Welcome to singapore
You have to add lemon to your sugar cane juice. It’s next level!
Duck & Goose are more yummy than Chicken
It's more organic over there. ✅️
Mix sugarcane juice with coconut juice. Because sugarcane is pure sugar it’s not really going to help hydrate you. The coconut juice is supposed to help hydrate you.
coconut water is naturally sweet. adding sugarcane is just making it more sweet?
It’s curry puff
Carrot cake delicious !😋😋😋
