    It happened again in 4x100m relay final at Tokyo, when Filipo Tortu of Italy came from behind to beat GBR's anchor.

    Mennea nearly blew it by not dipping at the end......Would have been one of the all time classic Olympic bloopers if Wells beat him, and probably used by coaches all over the world to show why you need to dip on the line.

      @MaxBassanetti Год назад +1

      Mennea was nervous because he had to start from the 4th row and instead they put him in the eighth (together with the front row the most disadvantaged)

    • @Karen-yq2sh
      @Karen-yq2sh Год назад

      Dips are negligible in improving position, the advantage gained is only from the torso which is mere inches and it sacrifices form, hence top speed, it's also psychologically detrimental as an athlete who dips has pretty much conceited defeat as a confident runner never relies on such tactics

    Pietro Mennea greatest of all time. Sacrifice, backbreaking workouts in Formia. 178 cm tall, 69 kg. He achieved the world record in the 200 meters which lasted for 17 years (today it is still a European record after 42 years). Also bronze medal at the Olympics at 20, and finally with the most beautiful race of all time he won the gold medal.

      He admitted taking Human Growth Hormone, which wasn't illegal until 1989. It's possible that this led to his tragic early death at the age of 60 in 2013.

    What a race! I remember it so clearly from the time. As a Scot, Allan Wells was such a hero of mine...but I also really admired Pietro Mennea. I wasn't that disappointed Allan missed out here...maybe because his 100m gold was already in the bag. They has some ding dong tussles in their time...the muscle-bound beast v the skinny rocket...magic stuff.
