Also, Federal HST has been shown to penetrate deeply, consistently and expand reliably even when fired from common 3 inch barrels.

Another upside to using the majority of the ammo you recommend is that it is used by law enforcement. They have tested it in the laboratory, on the range, in the field and most importantly in court. After a self defense use of force, one less thing to worry about is defending the ammo you used in the civil lawsuit that is sure to follow. As always great info Reid. Thanks.

What you said is true. Speer is a great load, but there r better in my opinion. Speed loads their 223 very low. Chrono any speer 223 gold dot and you will get significantly lower velocities than that if say Winchester m193. Which is just fmj. If my memory serves right, it’s about 2700 fps on speeds 55 g gold dot and m193 is 3100 fps.
Edit: just checked, out of a 16 inch gold dot goes ~2880 and m193 goes ~3160. Chronographs vary of course. Not saying m193 is the best load, I’m just using it to compare bc it’s very common.

Not to correct you Reid, but just to point it out, speer makes short-barreled loads for most defensive pistol calibers. That would be the route to go for micro-carry guns.

    Excellent video!
I've used Speer Gold Dot 9mm 124 grain out of my duty S&W 646 on a 210 lb black bear.
Fifty feet away, first shot stunned him. You could see his fur raise up all over his body in an instant.
Second shot broke him down and he slid downhill five feet from me with one if our dogs in his mouth!
Won't bother with other details but Speer Gold Dot works!
Both bullets were recovered, good penetration, good mushrooms, and if course results.
Looking forward to seeing you on The Ridge!

Great stuff Reid! ShootingTheBull410 has a whole series on tests out of a 3" barrel for 9mm. Agreed on your +P comment, but he has tested a few that performed very well at normal pressure, the HST you mentioned being one of them in 124 and 147. Winchester's Ranger T and Defend also did excellent at normal pressure.

    300blAKout. If your still around.
The 6.8 is grate. I taken hogs and deer. Using the90 gr bonded gold dot fed. Load. Its made its way through most of the deer one it went through both shoulder bones stopped in the hide. On the bigger hogs it did about like the deer above.
Taken one shot at 300 yd put it right in the ear of the hog. Soft shooting accurate.
Now I do have a buddy that hand loads he uses a 150 gr roundnose for his ss can loads he has taken hogs with it but the bullet does not expand much.

Reid, I chronographed Speer's 124 +P grain Gold Dot in my SIG 938. Velocity for this round was around 1100 ft/sec. so I checked the regular 124 grain Gold Dot in the same P938, velocity was the same 1100 ft/sec. It may be different in other pistols but that's what I got out of my P938 checking two different loadings on the same day and was very happy getting what I got out of the 3" barrel. My CZ75 clocked in closer to 1200 ft/sec just for "what will a longer barrel do" that was really good for this ammo.

I know this is an old video but if anyone is looking for these Speer gold dot rounds federal power shock is about 10$ a box and they load them with 64grain gold dot bullet. That’s what I use along with the actual Speer load. I use it for deer/coyote hunting and defense and it does a number on a deer out to 150yds and probably a bit farther. The hornady black sbr 75grain interlok and Remington 62gn corelokt are also really good for all of the above but they cost a little more.

Usually, with all testing I've seen by RUclipsr's like shootingthebull410 and tnoutdoors9, when it comes to 9mm standard pressure tends to penetrate a little more. Plus p gives up penetration for a little more expansion.
Reid, have you checked out L-Tech's new FullStop lead free copper hollow point? It is pretty cool. It also uses Shell Shock Technologies NAS3 case. Haven't seen the big channels test it yet. DocTacDad here on RUclips tested it out of a 9mm Shield, Glock 19 and CZ Scorpion w/7.5" barrell. Bullet is blind to barrel length, penetration was exactly the same and wound channels were almost identical. The higher velocity rounds expanded more as compared to the short barrels.
After seeing that video, I called L-Tech to see where I can order their FullStop. I spoke with Larry at L-Tech, and he explained that their website was down. They had the ammo ready to go but no way to take orders online. He said they had FullStop for rifle calibers too. This hollow point precut seems like an HST going down the sides of the bullet to promote expansion. It opens up into 3 thick nasty boat propeller like petals and fucks shit up. Not sure for how long, but the 9mm is sold in box of 20 and 50 rounds. I bought the 50 round boxes and before shipping it was around the same price as the HST/Gold Dot 50 round boxes. I'd like to get your opinion on it.

MatteoSixSeventyFour yes! maybe because it's still relatively new reputation wise, but that 135 grain +p (even std pressure did well) really impressed me in my own range testing! Departments like the military like to stick with what they know. Adequate is the enemy of perfection. Like the military, supply lines have already been contracted for specific brands of equipment that the department uses and you would have to have a significant amount of pull or pursuasion to get anyone to disrupt that system, especially since most departments don't even have enough money to really funciton to their full potential to begin with, rarely will anyone let you potentially waste money on an unknown variable. In my area winchester is the king, not that it is the best, but it is what we have been using the past decades.

So Reid, how did you choose between the 147gr and the 124? I have been carrying the hst 147gr standard pressure for almost 2 years and I love it. Have not shot the 124gr though am always thinking about it. Is the lighter bullet going to penetrate slightly more but have a little less impact as far as stretch cavities and damage is concerned over the slower but heavier 147? Im always curious of these things and its hard to find quality info which is 1 reason I love your channel. Short and to the point. No bs, and straight truth and care. Im glad you broke off and did your own thing. Heading to Bondy's Rifleman 1 alpha nextmonth and soon hope to visit you guys up there. This will be my 1st class so Im pretty psyched!

Ordered a passel of M855A1 bullets from American Reloading yesterday. Those seem to be nice general use bullets. It sure looks like one could say that those have been well tested. Now I just need to build or buy a 5.56 rifle to shoot them from and work up a nice load for them and a practice load analog to practice with. I wasn't going to get a 5.56 but the availability of these bullets changed my mind.

    • @vicnighthorse

It kinda looks like rifle plates are getting more popular, so armor penetration has become one of my considerations. Longer barrels are also looking better to me because of this. It'll be nice finally having round that I can get BDC reticles for too. Oh, I kinda wish the plug beneath the penetrator was lead rather than copper. Ammunition just doesn't seem to be the best place to go "green" to me.

thanks Reid for the confirmation...I had been using golden sabre 147 grain in my CZ PCR. Ran great but accuracy just OK.... I recently purchased a Glock 19 and the golden sabor 147 Grange just does not perform as well in this particular gun. I saw all of the ballistics tests that I could find on RUclips regarding the federal HST, and that seems definitely to be the round to go with. I'm going to go to the range today as a matter of fact to put a few hundred rounds truth o'clock. If it runs well and shoots as good as the sabor at least, that's going to be my round of choice. the Liberty ammo that is hollow and very light with a very high muzzle velocity seems to be all the rage. "Bone Frog" sells 500rds for about $450. Burns hot and clean, avg 3100fps (with a 16in bbl), avg 0.73 moa @ 100yds. Back when I bought my 9mm Federal HST, I could only find 147gr in normal pressure at my LGS, so I bought the entire case. Is the 147gr good or should I sell them and get 124's? I carry a G17 and 92FS. All responses will be appreciated. Thanks.

reid, what would you suggest for a 20.5" vepr in 54r. being the round it is, 400 yards shouldnt be an issue. i also built my own ar from a poly lower and a 16"ss psa kit and a 30 round magpull.
the funny thing is. the government paid me the funds to purchase these fine firearms. being I've been deemed disabled. i shoot pistol right handed left eye. till i modify a scope mount. i have to sholder left. i lost the eye sight in my right eye. but corse of nature being ingrained, sholdering right to not find a gun sight. when i can get a left eye mount for a right sholdered riffle. that ingrained natural sholder wont be an issue for me.

Have you tested Hornady Critical Duty 135gr flex tips ? Clearly didn't make your list, is it an overenetration issue with this round ? They cycle very well in...well all my 9's. I'm a bit concerned about overenetration though.
Hey I really enjoy your channel and hope to come out and train with your group.

HST and ranger T have been good to me in 45s, course my CZ don't care about 9mm, It chews it all up, so it's pretty much dealers choice unless we start talking long range accuracy. I've had limited success with keltec pf9 though, they seem to do best with hornedy with that plastic like tip

Reid, since home defense is usually a matter of feet not yards, isn't all ammo going to be accurate enough to dispose of a home invader? I have shot thousands of Red Army rounds out of my SKS (fmj) and never had one failure. I have shot other more expensive manufacturer's rounds out of the same rifle and have had failures (soft point mainly, but some fmj rounds too). As with all mechanical things and manufactured things, there is always a statistical probability of failure. More expensive does not always mean better success. Is my SKS my home defense weapon? No, my pump shotgun is my main home defense weapon so all of these rounds discussed did not help in that department. Thanks for the information, you do a great service to all in your videos and I "choose you" over all others! Peace brother (US Army 1973 - 83, yes old, but I still practice).

Love God Love your channel Thank you Brother. I use Speer gold dot 9mm 124gr + p short barrel ammunition in my G26. Is there a difference between the short barrel and regular ammo. They are both 124 + p. The short barrel version is hard to find. I don't think their is a difference. (is there? )

    • @dansmasonry1
      @dansmasonry1 7 лет назад +1

KK Prepper yes there is a difference. The short barrel ammo is designed for exactly what it says. The non short barrel ammo will still work fine but it may not provide the proper penetration.

It's all shot placement. Won't matter if you don't hit the vitals. I hunt quite a bit and can tell you if you don't hit heart, lung, or spinal cord, they will not die for several minutes or even days. If your a confident shot a fmj will work, killed a deer with m855 and completely destroyed the lungs of a whitetail.

Hey Reid, what do you think of the eastern bloc 8m3 hollowpoint loading in 7.62x39mm, the bullet has weak points in the jacket so it fragments and dumps its energy in the target and has the impressive gel tests and is also used by the Russian interior ministry troops and various Russian SF units to good effect in urban and counter-terrorist operations
