Thailand cave rescue: New Footage released - BBC News

  • Sources in the rescue operation, including divers who took part, told the BBC that the boys were heavily sedated ahead of the rescue to prevent them panicking in the dark, narrow, underwater passageways.
They were then strapped to one of two rescue divers tasked with shepherding each boy through the underwater parts of the system, and bundled into stretchers to be carried through the dry parts.
There were conflicting reports in the hours after the rescue about the extent to which the boys had been medicated before they were brought out. The Thai prime minister on Tuesday denied reports that they had been sedated, saying the boys were given only light anti-anxiety medication commonly provided to soldiers.
But several sources have since confirmed that the boys were only partially conscious as they were brought out.

The First two British divers who found the boys have balls of steel. Diving into the unknown is horrifying. To everyone who took part in this rescue, directly or indirectly, a big THANK YOU from Africa.

I totally agree. The murky unknown with strong currents. 5 Kms unknown!! Volunteers!!! Also, after finding them, they had to come back on their own. This is remarkable.

It's what they do for fun outside their jobs, plus they used a rope to ensure they found their way out. That's the right way to do cave diving etc and the right thing to do in the unknown. Still brave and great men who cared enough to push themselves beyond their own limits.

Lets also remember the Thai farmers, who's rice fields have been completely destroyed by all that water that was pumped from the cave onto them! Those people are going to starve if someone doesn't help them! They willingly agreed to have their crops destroyed to save these boys lives. They are heroes too! Lets not forget about them!

According to Thai Gov’t, a relief money will be paid in 2weeks. The farmers will get around 1,100-1,690 bath per Rai(thai measurement unit 1600 sq.m) depending on what type of crops they grown. And they will be giving seeds too.

Thanks everyone :) SO glad to hear they're being cared for! So often in situations like this a fortune is spent on rescues, but then once the media circus dies down, there's actually lots more casualties that are forgotten & left without even small amounts of life changing money they need for recovery

Imo, to give sedatives to the boys (i take it they also sedated the coach) was a brilliant idea by the anesthetist-diver Dr. Richard Harris. If I were undernourished from being trapped in a cave, I would easily panic in dark waters or even on that pulley system pulling the person across those steep gaps. Those cave divers were definitely elite experts to have swam underwater (zero visibility) carrying a person who isn't propelling with their feet. Those rescue divers deserve a medal. Their strategy, knowledge, incredible skill, and courage is commendable.

Can anyone here explain to me why you choose to turn a thoughtful, caring, well wishing statement into a hateful statement? Does not matter if they believe in God. The person making the statement does. And has prayed for these people. It is not harming anyone! Your negativity is the only hateful, rude, and inconsiderate statements found here. Learn to let people love the way they choose. You preach inclusiveness while excluding a majority of the human race. And maybe the divers are proud of their roots. And its good to give credit where credit is due!

I have no problem with this. None whatsoever. If there is an implication that somehow the rescue people were indifferent to the welfare of the boys. That's ridiculous. This whole operation was for their welfare. And if the experts determined that a chill pill was necessary to accomplish this? So be it. These men are heroes. This impossible Herculean task. And they did it. Gives me hope and optimism in mankind.

Such fantastic news, something we all need. Their parents and loved ones must be elated. The Thai and international rescue team were a dream team of courage, dynamic thinking and tenacity, lovely to see how well they worked together for a positive result 😊🙌. I think the coach did great to keep those, clearly special kids together in what must have been scary times. Let us not forget the Thai diver though that gave his life for theirs, may he rest in peace. All heroes 🤗

Make a great movie about it. It deserves a movie. Then donate everything minus the costs of production and distribution to the Mae Sai community and the stateless children of this region. It's time their voices got heard. Many are working illegally throughout Thailand, some are exploited due to their status. 4 of the Wild Boar team are stateless too. I want a better future for them - this is maybe the best way to help.

Natt, thanks for that comment, I didn't know any of that. I hope we get to hear more about them & their background now they're out/once they've had time to recover. I also hope some money starts flowing towards the community around the cave. Ironically it may through macabre tourism. Lets also hope the farmers that lost their fields to the water get enough food for their families too!

The Thailand government needs to be commended also for displaying humility ,humbleness and foresight in allowing foreign expertise to come to their assistance in a timely manner that precipitated the rescue of the boys for too often we hear of other nations finding themselves in similar predicament let self ego and pride get the better of them refuse outside expertise which resulted in the loss of lives. And instead of admitting their failures shrug their shoulders and continue well it's business as usual.Experts exist in this world why to let others know that they are good at what they do not because they found themselves there but because they are better than you.

Ben Reymenants and his team were part of finding the boys, not only the British divers. Ben and his team were crucial in finding the way to the boys and for laying down the guide rope.

Great effort by everyone. Sad for the diver who died few days back. Sedating the kids is good idea, they would have panic'd.
Mark my words: few years from now, everyone will forget how difficult it was to rescue them and question why they were sedated.

I would definately want to be sedated if facingthis ordeal. Its a no no for me of dark watery zero visibility tight spaces. I just qant to open my eyes outside the cave. Good plan indeed. Congratsto all rescuer and may all the boys abd coach in good health. Looking forward for their side of stories though.

remember the movie "It" when the kids are going through dark tunnels? ... but the differences are that this hole is much smaller, several miles long, and filled with water. How brave the boys have to be to get out through this hell hole without going insane...don't forget that certain parts of the journey required them to swim through a long stretch of water with zero visibility and knowing that there is a rock ceiling above them, no place to rest and no time to wait. I would have asked to be sedated myself.....

In the report. The boy still awake while taking them out. But some part it's to far to let them walk coz they are so weak.
So the rescue team need to wrapped them tight to prevent they fall off coz some part have to put them on sling. Bbc should be more careful when you report the news

Looking forward to the reporting on the Prime Minister's soiree once everyone is rested where all will be reunited to celebrate this miraculuous feat of human endeavor. It will be wondrous to see the children healthy and smiling as they greet each and everyone of the members of the rescue team while commemorating the fallen hero Thai Navy Seal, Mr. Saman Kunam. Deservedly so, huge kudos goes out to all of the members of the team, particularly to the two who found these boys alive deep in the cavern.
