    remember… REJECTING a theist’s CLAIMS is an ATTACK on their beliefs.

    • @Wolf-ln1ml
      @Wolf-ln1ml Год назад +27

      ...and for far too many who have incorporated those beliefs into their personality, into the "core" of who they are, it's also an attack on their personality. For some, it's apparently even worse than if you called them an idiot or a**hole...

      This is why I don't bother arguing whether god is real or not anymore.

    Personal experiences with faith are interesting because many people have found that their life experiences have deepened their faith in different religions. As a former Nichiren Buddhist, I used to see the ups and downs as proof that my Buddhist practice was working. The problems I faced were obstacles that came because my practice was expanding my life condition. By continuing to chant and study I was able to overcome the problems. In the end, I came to the conclusion that I was trained by my faith community to see bad things as challenges and good things as benefits. I quit chanting almost 4 years ago, because faith isn't really something I'm good at, my life has remained pretty much the same. I suspect that most religions teach their followers to see the world in a way that makes their personal life experiences seem to be evidence that their religion is true.

Draper had seven wives and is the man after whom Draper, Utah, is named. But when, in the spring of 79', I saw a confrontation between my Mormonism and science, I prayed and prayed and PRAYED for some kind of guidance from on high. NONE EVER CAME!!! God never even tried to help or "keep me in the fold". For 37 years I was agnostic, now I am atheist. Dear ol' Godfrey has never made any magical appearance in my life, though He has had thousands of chances to do so. • @byMidnyt
      @byMidnyt Год назад

      Religion (particularly Christianity) has used "adult funtime" as a way to exert control over people since...oh I don't know, forever. So it has a strong interest in promoting the idea that everyone wants to engage in that activity. People like yourself are not going to be able to be controlled as easily if you don't share the interest in that activity.
      Some people, particularly those who have been controlled, are going to get pissed at you because you've just proven that maybe what they were told wasn't true, and they are just realizing that they've been letting others control them. Once they open themselves up to the fact that they've been lied to and controlled, then they start to wonder about what else they were lied to about, and pretty soon, the whole house comes crashing down.
      It also opens up the possibility that maybe they too are "other" in some way and that treating you the way they have isn't very nice, and that people could find out about their otherness and start treating them the way they've been treating you. Nobody wants to admit that they aren't the person they think they were, and that they might have done better.
      In addition, if they have a place of power within the status quo, it means the possibility that they could lose that power, and that frightens them more than anything else.

    8:50 "Written by men" - those research papers don't also claim to be infallible. And if further evidence should come along that invalidates their conclusions the authors will readily alter their views. This is how knowledge increases. This is why we have all the modern conveniences, clean water, a reliable food supply, an ability to predict the weather far superior than just 30 years ago, etc.
    And the corrections will keep coming in. And our knowledge and related power will continue to grow.
    14:19 No. First of all you don't _start out_ with a hypothesis. You start out with observations of natural phenomenon for which you don't understand the cause. A few steps later you form a hypothesis. Then you don't go out and search for evidence to prove your hypothesis. That is a straight line to confirmation bias. No, you consider all the ways your hypothesis could be _disproved._ And then you go on from there. No need to get into the details in this comment. But at the root of it all is observations of natural phenomena. This is why "the god of the gaps" so consistently fails. Every time we've succeeded in determining the cause of a natural phenomenon no god has been required. This has been the case for literally thousands of years.
    15:10 We have archeological evidence, which tells us a whole lot about the past without resorting to written witness accounts. In fact, on the whole it is more reliable than those accounts. Things remarkable enough to be recorded by witnesses also often end up being exaggerated in witness accounts, for example the sizes of armies, the scale of monumental buildings, etc.
    20:50 I was raised without religion, not as an "atheist", but simply in an environment where there was no particular importance given to any religions, a secular household. Throughout my life I've never seen any compelling evidence that leads me to belief in the existence of any gods or goddesses. That's all. It's as simple as that.
    21:33 It's one thing to say, "I firmly believe God is real" and it's another to say, "God is real." Say the latter and you can expect some challenges, and that's the way it should be.
    22:35 "Which I don't even want in the first place" - Fine. Then don't. If you don't want it then you don't need a supernatural being to keep you from doing it. Just do what you want and don't sleep around. - Peyton's thought processes are so confused. Life really isn't this complicated. But then, he is young. I'll admit I was a bit more confused at his age than I am now.

    SkepTick, "corn" is RUclips slang for a different 4-letter word that rhymes, but starts with "P".
    Saying "corn" instead of the real word keeps them from getting demonetized, I guess.

      Btw, I was reading YT Community Guidelines a few days ago and it turns out they can indeed demonetize or even terminate your channel if you swear too much. This is the most fucking ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Is this YT Kids or something?

    "The atheists don't want to accept my proof!" I guess he doesn't understand that subjective experiences he can't even demonstrate happened aren't proof of God. At best, just proof he had some sort of experience.
    "I can't use the Bible because it was written by men." I never used that silly argument. The Bible isn't proof or reliable evidence because it hasn't been shown to be true, itself. None of the miracle God stories have been supported as true. In fact, we know many of the stories, as written, never even happened. So the Bible lacks credibility.
    Ya can't whine if your sucky evidence isn't convincing to other people.

    As a former believer myself, I know that sometimes when someone has doubts about their faith, they try to compensate (atone?) via public outbursts against atheists. I don't know whether that's relevant in this particular case--but I am pretty sure that "corn" is a euphemism for "porn."
