    There's no way Shohei makes those definitive statements unless his lawyers were fully on board that there's no fault with Shohei. Way too much at stake, so him making those statements is pretty telling. IMO, he was fooled and duped by Ippei but I also see how that can happen to someone with that much money.

    • @jonathaningersoll6213

      I don't know if I have the timeline accurate in my head, but I'm thinking there's no way Ippei OR Shohei give any statements without either their lawyers or the Dodgers PR having a full-blown meeting telling them, "okay guys this is what you say". The thing is, (where the timeline thing is important) there seems to be some walking back of statements. But yeah, there's no way someone's lawyers or PR doesn't immediately swoop in and give them a script.

    I think Trevor failed to mention something else regarding Ohtani's situation. He is absolutely right that in order to get to and succeed in MLB many, MANY players entrust people to handle literally almost everything else in their lives. This leaves them vulnerable to be taken advantage of by unscrupulous people. However, those players all are only trying to succeed at the highest level as a position player OR a pitcher. Ohtani is doing both, therefore he is even more reliant on someone to handle everything else.

    • @bigpictureguys8415
      @bigpictureguys8415 2 месяца назад

      Well to counterpoint that most players have a legitimate fear they won’t be able to make a career out of baseball.
      Ohtani has known he’d at least be a success rich big leaguer from day 1. It’s always just been a matter of how good can he be.
      Not having anyone ever check your accounts is beyond moronic. It’s not realistic

      @@bigpictureguys8415 Superstar players have been scammed by their advisors before. What happens when a player of any stature hires a person they trust to check their accounts, then that person turns around and scams them? Add into it that you don't understand the language your accounts are in. Put yourself in his shoes but reversed. You are a superstar player making tons of money in Japan. In order to live in Japan, you will need Japanese credit cards and bank accounts. Those statements are all in Japanese. Who is going to be telling you what the documents say? Your translator. I so appreciate Jimmy's well informed take. Notice how he actually "read stuff" online and followed up about the nuances of using an interpreter and a handler, and thought about it. Meanwhile you have guys like Rich Eisen and Ken Rosenthal raising their eyebrows and snarkily going "I don't know you guys, how does this happen without Ohtani knowing???" Uhh, why don't you do some actual research before just talking.

    • @MMuraseofSandvich

      Talking heads like Eisen have a vested interest in stirring up drama and controversy. That's how they attract viewership and clicks, i.e., ad revenue. We really should stick to the evidence (such as it is) that the Times and AP have reported thus far.

    • @charlesbalter3470
      @charlesbalter3470 2 месяца назад

      I listened to Rich Eisen's show, and it went much further into the facts of the case. Since ESPN was aware of these five $500,000 wire transfers from Ohtani's account in January - the wires took place in September and October of 2023 - it does raise questions about how Ohtani could be completely unaware of any of this until last week.
      Tisha Thompson also reports that it's AT LEAST $4.5 million, and it's possibly more.

    I just remembered a story kinda like what happened to Shohei, but not really. Definitely like what happened to Mike Tyson and Don King.
    Manny Pacquiao prior to signing with both Golden Boy and Top Rank was signed to a man named Murad Muhammad. This dude, with help from Manny’s own manager was stealing money from him. Dude died before the case was settled so I don’t know what happened afterward.
    Edit: What I’m trying to get to is, cases like these happens all the time in the sporting world, especially with guys who don’t speak English as a primary language. They get taken advantage of. Especially now with new revelations that Ippei has a lot of inconsistencies to his story with regards to his work history, where he graduated and such.

    if you pay attention, Otani didn’t find out until after the game and he had to go to another interpreter to clarify what Ippie said. furthermore, the Dodgers have found out that Shohei is more accessible now that his interpreter is gone so obviously, the interpreter was keeping Shohei in the dark about everything.

    You guys were spot on except the part about the bookie. The bookie knew it was the interpreter who was gambling and gave that line of credit to the interpreter. They are on record with the feds stating they never dealt with Ohtani or had Ohtani as a client. They knew money was coming from Ohtani based off the checks. So it’s 2 outcomes Ohtani knew and provided funds for whatever reason or the interpreter was saying my buddy can cover my losses and that’s how he got that credit. It’s all easily provable with forensic accounting.

    C'mon! Ohtani is not going to use his OWN account, with his OWN name on it, to pay off an illegal bookie. He knows everyone watches him, wants to know what he does, etc. His interpreter was more than just his interperter. He had an seperate account, with Ohtani's name and permission to use, for conducting personal purchase, payment of bills, etc. Money went into this account every month, for the course of several years, and Ippei made the debt transactions 9 times, without Ohtani's knowledge. Ohtani's biggest crime was trusting this guy and now he is paying for it with this "guilty until proven innocent" bannana.

    17:30 Let's not forget that Ippei also has the presumption of innocence until proven guilty (or free from liability unless proven otherwise in civil court). Homeboy needs to shut up, hire an attorney, do what the attorney says, and cooperate with the Feds. Odds are he's not going to make a statement again unless he's in court talking to a judge.
    It doesn't look very good for him, but that doesn't mean he goes straight to jail. If he can provide the Feds with valuable evidence (something other than testimony because his credibility is done-zo) in their case against Bowyer, he could get a plea deal and then disappear from the face of the earth. Probably won't work with the IRS.

      The illegal gambling is one thing, stealing from your employer is another. Ohtani and his family might be spiteful as Ippei basically ruined his image which is a very big deal in Japanese culture. I mean seriously, people have committed suicide because they brought shame to their family.

      According to Sho, Ippei would tell people that he was relaying information to him when he wasn’t. I expect that we will find out Ippei’s lies go way deeper than anyone could have imagined.

      @@legendsofthegame394 Yeah, that could be. And I'm no expert on what the federal attorney's standard operating procedure is. It just seems like they, upon seeing "Otani" come up attached to the transfers, should have asked him some questions. Shohei's lawyers should have been informed. The Dodgers should have known. But it seems they were caught off guard too. And of course -- Shohei should have known. It seems batshit crazy that Ippei was able to control access to Shohei to that extent, but that appears to be the story they're going with.

      @@nerdbot37 A good federal prosecutor keeps things tightly under wraps until the grand jury, and even then the good ones won't say a thing in public until the indictment is handed down. They do this to protect the independence of the Department of Justice from any influence other than the law and the evidence, and to prevent tipping off any defendants of incoming federal charges or witnesses that could be intimidated. AG Merrick Garland got a lot of flack from day one, but he's been running an incredibly tight and effective ship from what I've seen. (I'm not a lawyer, but I have learned from a bunch of really good ones). If they thought it was necessary to talk to Shohei to build their case, they would have done so, so it seems that they haven't seen the need to interview him so far. Plus Shohei's legal team is cooperating with the FBI.
      There have been a lot of examples (e.g. Elvis Presley) where access to a celebrity is strictly controlled through one guy, usually a lawyer, a manager, or otherwise a "fixer". If the allegation that Ippei did likewise and took advantage of his control proves to be true, he's hardly the first to do this, nor will he be the last. I don't think it's as crazy as it sounds, if you want to focus on your talents and skills and not deal with sponsorship deals or interview requests every hour, you put a trusted person (or better yet a well-managed team) there to handle all that.
      If Shohei's attorneys' allegations are true, Ippei gained the full and unwavering trust of arguably the greatest baseball player of our generation, someone that every MLB team would move heaven and earth to satisfy. If Shohei said "Ippei's my man, he's cool, I trust him," that apparently was good enough for the league, and if the allegations are true, Ippei betrayed that trust in some of the worst ways possible. I would imagine that MLB and other sports leagues will learn from this and implement policies to make sure "fixers" are worthy of this level of trust.

      @@nerdbot37 If the feds are doing it right, they don't say anything public until the grand jury, and even then some federal prosecutors won't say anything in public until the indictment or plea deal. This way they can legitimately say that they performed the investigation independent of any outside influence, and they can avoid tipping off defendants who could do Bad Stuff like intimidate witnesses.

      @@nerdbot37Ippei is quite literally Ohtani speaking English. The control is there because 1. Ippei seems to have manipulated everyone, from Shohei to the media, to the fans... That he is a harmless, innocent soul.
      2. Ohtani has never handled his own money since he became a pro. Ohtani trusted Ippei like he trusted his mother when he was in Japan

    Dudes, apparently Ippei’s Wife didn’t know about any of this. He said that to the reporter from ESPN during his 90 min interview which Ohtani didn’t know about. And this is coming from Japanese media but supposedly Ippei had something like check writing privileges or limited POA on an account Ohtani had set aside for charity related businesses.

      Depending on the outlet, I haven't found Japanese media other than NHK to be reliable, they can be very prone to reporting opinion and speculation in the same authoritative tone as facts. As far as I can tell their sources are the same as the sources for Western media, and no one's reporting about check-writing privileges (though to be fair, if Ippei did do what Shohei's attorneys allege, it would be very difficult for him to pull it off without that power). I don't think we'll see much more in the way of evidence unless a courtroom gets involved or unless MLB issues their findings.

      Ippei is either incredibly careless or incorrigibly dishonest. The latter is actually quite rare, of all the legislators in this country, only Santos is a known liar of that magnitude. I'm thinking someone told him re: his bio, "Just put whatever, no one's gonna read it." If this scandal hadn't happened, he would have been called out on it eventually, and it would have been edited into something more honest and humble. Now it's another brick in the wall that says, "Ippei is a liar".
