      cutting disk on sheet metal probably wears faster because the sheet moves more pinching the disk edge as it flexes. thanks for the videos

    To all potential safety apparel companies that would like a sponsorship opportunity. Ants Pants is a great opportunity. Growing channel, outstanding content, and Andris needs some serious help in the area of safety apparel. Using this video as the perfect example…using a welder and plasma cutter only protected by t-shirt, shorts, and crocs.

      As Mike Rowe says: “Safety Third”. Which is about being TOO dependent on safety equipment. Example…I’m a soap maker, it is recommended that you wear eye protection, gloves, long sleeves, long pants and shoes. I forgo everything but the glasses and thus am very conscience about spills and cleanup.

    A plasma cutter uses electric current to melt metal, and then the air-pressure blows the molten metal away, creating a clean-cut. If done right, the metal cut should be blown free of metal and not need to be hammered or otherwise broken free. Try playing with your air pressure settings if it is not cutting cleaning and all the way through. Your travel speed can be too fast or too slow. It just takes practice like welding. To fast travel and the metal does not have enough heat to completely melt and/or time to be blown from the cut. Going to slow can allow metal to blow back into where you already cut. Tip: ALWAYS grind and clean the edges of plasma cuts before trying to weld to remove the impurities introduced by the plasma into the metal. You will be making great cuts all the time now.

    I'll give you an idea with heating. You could place firewood stove in other room or even make a little room outside. You just need a special stove for that, which I've seen on a market, or it could be a good video idea to make. We made one ourselves, just from a big diameter pipe (maybe 600-700mm). Ends welded with a plate, made a spiral from a steel strip around a pipe, about 50mm height and welded a sheet around. Put a fan which sucks air from the room, sends it through the spiral several times around a pipe, which heats air, and then via air duct you send it where you want. We're heating around 130 square meters of pre-soviet era shop, which leaks air everythere and it works perfect. Pipe is around 1,5m long, but your space is smaller and insulated, so pipe could be way shorter. Best of luck from LT!

    Such a wonderful welding area in the workshop! I Like it. When welding, I always put a spray bottle of water next to the working area. For small burns (e.g. on wood table) I can cool it down / avoid fire. I also have a fire extinguisher in my workshop. In the plasma table, just put some sand in there. And always wear good shoes while doing plasma cutting ;) Plasma is 16000 °C hot. Some days ago, sparks go through my safety shoes... but nothing more happens, it only hurts.

    Nice cutting table! And congratulations on getting your plasma cutter!
    I just picked up a plasma cutter last week for doing some major repairs to a trailer. It's an unused Chicago Electric 40Amp 240V non-touch pilot-arc start model. A fellow posted it on Craigslist, and I picked it up for $200 US. I then spent another $135 on getting a selection of plasma "consumables" (cutting tips, electrodes, swirl ring, and insulated retaining cup) for it, including gouging tips for cutting welds from components while keeping the base metal.
    The benefit of a non-touch pilot-arc plasma cutting version is that the electrodes will last longer if the tip isn't shorted against the material being cut. It also can supposedly do cleaner cuts, and can start cuts on painted or rusted metal. These are also preferred for use with a CNC table. A DIY CNC plasma cutting table is a project I plan to make in the not-to-distant future.
    Unfortunately, the model Vevor sent you is the slightly less expensive contact version. But heck, as they saying goes; "beggars can't be choosers".... You'll just have to replace the electrodes more often. You might be able to use a standoff to minimize electrode wear and only "touch" to get the arc started....
    One thing I learned that might be helpful to you -- you can buy different width tips to cut at different amperages -- useful for cutting thinner materials so you can cut them with a smaller kerf and also reduce the cutting slag on them. I got 20, 30 and 40amp tips for mine. I also got an insulated retaining cup and tips so I can make cuts while touching the material without damaging the electrodes or having to use standoffs. It'll also be easier do plasma gouging using the insulated cup and tips.
    One other thing I learned is that to be careful of where you buy your "consumables" as a lot of the really cheap ones made in China won't last. There are some Chinese suppliers that make higher quality consumables that don't cost much more -- you just have to find a reputable manufacturer and supplier and buy from them.... One such manufacturer seems to sell consumables under the name "Theia Plasma", called Shanghai Theia Technical Co,.Ltd. I am sure there are others.
    You might also consider getting an inexpensive in-line desiccant "air dryer", as moisture is also very damaging to the electrodes in plasma cutters. These desiccant "air dryers" use the blue silica gel dessicant beads that turn pink when they need to be re-activated. Re-activating them is as simple as putting them on a shallow tray in the oven and baking the moisture out of them at around 250F or 120C. Packets of these dessicant beads are available from many places and don't cost much. Just make sure you get the blue "indicating" ones that turn color when they need to be re-activated.
    Here's a link to one that sells for $8 in the US -- I am sure there are similar ones available for around the same price in the EU:
    www.harborfreight.com/inline-desiccant-dryerfilter-64637.html

    Regarding the cut off disc mystery: I saw a video some time ago, where this exact question was answered. But for the life of me I just can`t remember where I saw it.
    Anyway, you need to score the metal as long as possible and the discs will last as long as they do when cutting thicker material. When you stick the disc through, you basically cut away the cutting disc on the thin edge of metal.

    Also, look into a outdoor wood boiler. Its an outside firebox setup that circulates hot water and then you can have a radiator in the shop. This way, you can save floor space for a fireplace and also won't need to bring the wood inside the shop to burn it.

Next time you see a piece somewhere, grab some floor grate for when the table slats are worn out. I use an inverted piece on my hand cut table as the top. I use a water pan under it but sand or wet sand is a good idea.

    I think it should be water, but you would have to waterproof your box. Standing water however brings mosquitoes, so a continuous drip of water into the trough by circulation would resolve that issue when not in use for extended periods of time. Very slow drip is sufficient. Using a magnet to collect up the slag will make cleanup simpler. Good video. Nice addition for your workshop..

      While adding water sounds like a good idea it is actually useless, unless the water is touching the metal you are cutting and it will splash everywhere because of the pressurised air. Leaving it empty is a much better choice

    the quick grinddisch useage can be that you use to big disc if cut thinnsheets use 1mm and only go 1direction away from you...if want to see a disc really disappear very quick pluge the disc and pull it against you ^^
    and on the heater... try look into Diesel infraheaters they dont put out that mutch offgas as you would think have hade one for 2years in a house for added baseheating and its very effective.

    Cutting discs - don't put them through the sheet metal any further than necessary. They last loads longer.
    Any pinch from the sheet metal on the sides of the disc wears it away, so the effective width of the cutting edge is tiny and wears in seconds.
    It took me years to realise this.
    Top work ss ever Mr Pants

    Good luck, it’s nice because you can cut any metal like aluminum, brass, stainless or cast iron and copper! But the thickness depends on the size of your machine! Moving too slow brother, they’re meant to cut fast! It’s going to take practice Andris, you got this my friend!

    sheet metal cut flex and also produce high frequency vibration which eat up the wheels.

    • @jeromedumalin9954
      @jeromedumalin9954 11 месяцев назад +1

      Also as the sheet metal is so thin you tend to cut it with the cut off disc plunged deep in the material. Some RUclips channel (I forgot who), did find out, that by cutting just with the disc on the metal surface (disc is tangential to the surface) the discs lasted waaaaay longer

  • @chrisoakey9841
    @chrisoakey9841 11 месяцев назад +1

    Put some water in the bottom of that table. As for the cutting disc on thin metal, i think it is twisting as it goes through. Try cutting with the metal on a sacrificial piece of wood.
    And weld some round bar on the bottom of your hood. It makes it stronger, and gets rid of sharp edges.

  • @davidnaudi2601
    @davidnaudi2601 11 месяцев назад +1

    Cut some round pipe in different sizes and add handles. This will give you perfect templates for round cutting.

  • @kirk467
    @kirk467 11 месяцев назад +1

    I used a plasma torch that would cut 4” plate! Just take care of the tungstens, you’ll know when it’s time to change them because it will start cutting a wider cut in the metal, it’s called the kerf!kerf is the gap the machine cuts! The little plasma torches we have are on roll around carts and they are 175 amp torches! They cut so much smoother and with less slag to grind!

    You might want to put a drawer in the plasma cutting box, for easy cleaning and when something falls inside. I am not sure about the wooden box underneath, sparks will fly once in a while. I try to stay away from wood when cutting.

    I’d recommend building a grid of the vertical slats on your plasma table so it’s removable. To clean and service beneath it. Also maybe look into building a used oil heater. Seen a number of people in the northern states build them. They work sort of like a diesel heater but burn used oil. It’s an idea. Plus a use for all that oil that comes out of Joseph.
