I forgot about this beautiful and amazing song and it just popped into my head today and came here. I remember Styx being one of the best in the 80's. (Along with RUSH). Miss this decade..
I wouldn’t put it so crass, but I’m a 4 foot 10 meek girl and an opera singer that quit the bachelor’s degree because people scare me: however I 100% agree. Styx, Kansas, Boston, etc. are the brilliant opera vocalists of progressive rock. Off topic kinda… I know Kansas traded band members all the time… does anyone know why the Styx lead singer is a brunette with a mustache and then a blond guy? I’m too green so maybe it’s not it’s even the same band, it’s so silly, but I’d adore someone schooling me.
I saw Styx in the mid '70s at Shadowland Ballroom on Lake Michigan's Silver Beach. Great memories of them and that concert. Times were different and they put on a great concert.
@@bluesgirl65 It was about the American dream. We've stopped dreaming and are awakening (like a sleeping giant). We are realizing the blue Statue of Liberty is a dude and liberty is a military term for slaves of the birth certificates and contract legal equity fiction. We await the call of America 24/7, but if we're smart we'll let the Vatican/British United States, Inc. phone ring right off the hook.
Aw this song play'in in basement on the turn table as fam & friends play'in pool. That Styx album playing that song, my Gran Melrose won that album, on a music radio show. She was what ever #caller. 1975 "...so lift up your heart, and make a new start... and lead us away from here..." Red The color red represents hardiness and valor, as well as courage and readiness to sacrifice. It is also sometimes said to represent the blood shed by those who have fought to protect our freedom and our country. Blue The color blue signifies justice for all, as well as vigilance and perseverance. A reminder that we must remain watchful and strong. White The color white stands for purity and innocence. Pure, because we are independent from other countries and hold true to our ideals. So what DeYoung is expressing in the first verse appears to be his unwavering patriotism. But that noted, in the second verse he still lets it be known, to his dismay, that his country is not as globally influential as it once was. And again, it’s not as if Dennis DeYoung is advocating war or anything like that. But it’s more like to him America has “changed” - and not in a good way. In fact what he seems to be implying in the chorus is that her negative transformation is the result of having grown too powerful, i.e. ‘conquering the world and more’. And it also seems he’s poetically saying something like, concerning her glory days, that they are permanently behind her. So what he is desiring, as illustrated in the final passage, is that the country “make a new start”, as in readjust its vision and “lead” the people to a more glorious path than the one that it is currently on. So even though this song may be critical of America it isn’t anti-establishment, as with many other similarly-natured tracks that were coming out during the post-Vietnam era, even though to some degree it is anti-war. It’s pretty clear that the vocalist does in fact love his country, and nothing is going to stop him from doing so. Such sentiment is partially based on him looking back to the past, when her situation was more ideal than it is now. And that would also be one of the reasons why he uses the word “suite”, a homonym of sweet, to describe her. Nonetheless he is obviously concerned with America’s present standing and its current trajectory. So conclusively, he is calling for the nation to reset its vision.
Not to nitpick, but I believe the line is "Suppressed in your dues" (over-taxation), not "Dressed in your jewels". And if that's not the line it ought to be!
The song's message is more recognizable today. Though it was written about the bicentennial and the over commercialization the celebration was. Though the Boomer youth who saw this celebration as young adults would probably be appalled by how corrupt and Commercialized sweet madame blue has become. Hell we have a failed Reality TV star trying to get into the white house for a second term.. that wouldn't have flied in the 70s America. We went downhill quick with big brands seeping their roots into our democratic process that it benefits their desires than that of the people. Want to make America Great again? When Dennis Deyoung was with Styx this was my favorite band. Gowan is ok, but I honestly like Deyoung better.

yes, statistics can certainly lie also. Mark Twain said so. not sure what you mean by 'exceed expectations'

Quite a serious social and political comment, even more relevant nowadays, given that the country seems to have gone to hell in a handbasket.
