  • Learn fantastic insights from Rob Longiaru’s many years on the beach doing research as a #conservation biologist with the Town of Hempstead. Rob’s research has created an annual cycle understanding of New York’s Black Skimmer population by studying the largest black skimmer colony in #newyork at the Nickerson Beach #shorebirds nesting site at #lidobeach which attracts 75% of the skimmers that breed on #longisland . Although they nest on the ocean beach, parents travel to bay waters to catch fish to feed their chicks.
Rob’s modern research tools include groundbreaking GPS telemetry. It not only monitors skimmers 24/7 while they’re nesting in New York in the summer. GPS telemetry also monitors their movements year-round as Skimmers make migratory stopovers to forage along the entire Atlantic Flyway and overwinter in beach colonies as far away as Georgia, Florida, even Cuba.
