I've been watching cabin rides as my pastime, and this is by far the most scenic and serene! from the marshes to the hills to the forests and grasslands, this ride is perfect for the weather during that time!!
This is my first Hokkaido ride video. Is it me, or does this island seem different from the rest of Japan? Things seem strangely untidy compared to the rest of the country. Rusted and neglected. Does Hokkaido not receive the same level of investment from the government?
Not different from the rest of Japan, but surely different from Tokyo and Osaka! You've probably just been watching videos from dense urban areas. In all countries, rural areas get less investment because they have fewer people. It has nothing to do with government; Japan is a capitalist country and most things are privately owned just like the West.
I agree. I've watched many other cab videos of rural Japan, but compared to Hokaido, Hokaido seems to be the most rural part of Japan. Which I guess makes sense as it is the least densely populated island and is, except for Sapporo, mostly just farming. Even if you look at street views of the towns in Hokaido, many of them have this old fisher village type of vibe. It truly is the boonies of Japan. But I like it.
One thing to keep in mind is the amount of snow Hokkaido gets every winter. There are unused areas which can be used for mountains of snow removed from the streets. Somewhat comparable in style to some areas in Alaska or northern Scandinavia and Finland. For rural videos you can also find areas of Kyushu and west side of Honshu to compare with, where the landscape also is more dramatic. Apart from the proximity to the ocean, I didn't find this line to be among the scenic ones, but I think that is because I see flatlands with trees every day, I can see other commenters thinking otherwise... interesting video anyway, as always. Traffic seems sparse, over two hours without meeting another train, still a track in good condition. Japan must be one of the most railway friendly countries there are.
From time to time, we can see some small railway pieces that are constructed perpendicularly to the main railway. Does anyone knows why? What do that serve for?
I think you are referring to guard rails, you will find them on the inside of curves, over briges etc. It serves as track reinforcement and a safety thing. From wikipedia, Guard rail (rail): In rail transport, guard rails or check rails are rails used in the construction of the track, placed parallel to regular running rail to keep the wheels of rolling stock in alignment to prevent derailment. They are generally used along areas of restricted clearance, such as a bridge, trestle, tunnel, or level crossing. They also help to minimize damage to the structure and allow easier post-accident cleanup. On sharp curves, guard rails may be placed inside the inner rail, where they engage the back of the flange of the wheel on that side.
I didn't think of it in this video, but there are for side lines in my country where you have small lightweight vehicles for track inspection in a shed and a perpendicular track from the shed to the actual line, where you simply use your muscles to put the vehicle on the track. Could be like rail bikes or have a small engine.
Quite enjoyable ride along. Thank you for sharing
A wonderful scenic adventure ,how many trains a day do they get on this line cheers bob .😁🤠🦘🐨🍺🍾🚆

@@Xezlec Great answer. Thanks! Actually, my fave videos have been filmed on Shikoku. Just as rural, but more touristy? than Hokkaido?
I agree.
