Hooray! Casey has learnt about Natural Toneh! Mimmicking the human eye is what looks most real. Indoors your iris is wide-open so you need F1.8 to get realistic toneh. Outdoors your eyes stop down (human auto-exposure is good), so the natural toneh look is at least F4, probably F5.6 on full frame. Learn to check what your eyes are showing you in each situation young Casey, and achieve Natural Toneh!
On the phone, the inside shots olympus won by a mile, pleasant face colours, sony had way too much contrast. Outside oly too yellow a bit, sony too red a bit. both nice, rich image q. autoexposure sometimes one would be better, sometimes the other.
Indoors with the superior Olympus you'd have to use a longer lens and set it back further in order to get soft Toneh (can't believe I wrote that). It might be worth it, since it's already superior outdoors. Too bad about the overexposure USER ERROR. Otherwise a great video.
I watch your vids on my 60 inch TV and both lenses have terrible wobbles in the corners when you’re walking. Maybe that’s inherent in super wide angle lenses in all brands for video. I use canon and haven’t purchased the 15-35 f2.8 for that exact reason. Inside, the Sony colors seem too red on your face while the Olympus looks more natural. That one shot you did with the bright backlight on both cameras shows just how good the Sony is for dynamic range, exposing your face correctly and catching the background without it being blown out, it’s amazing.
Still looks like you mixing REC2020 with REC709, that's why shirt colors are all over the place. Use Davinci's Color Space Transform when you mixing footage from different cameras or set the same standard in both cameras before recording.
I just love the super wide distortion effect. Just as you've done, putting your face in the middle so it looks normal, and the environment distorted around you looks really cool to me.
Before I even knew the cameras and lenses, I said to myself, "Whichever is on the right, the colors suck." Glad it was the expensive rig that sucks. Love M43...for the win, at least inside.
Ok I see it outside, the stretched out reality, it’s EXACTLY what I don’t like about the RF15-35 lens, the toneh itself is stretched, maybe it is too wide for outdoors where lots and lots of stretched toneh 🤔🤔🤔
Any lens that wide will stretch at the periphery. That's how 2D perspective works. A fisheye lens is actually optically more accurate to how your eye actually sees; but since human eyes only focus at the very center and our field of view isn't that wide, we can't perceive it.
Yes to your first question, even with your basic lighting and filming setup there is a huge difference, which can be further exacerbated with a more complex set :D Olympus looks like an action cam with a bit of toneh.
There certainly is a point where UWA lenses seem to distort just too much...you even see a slight difference between these 14mm and 15mm (equiv) lenses. Personally a fan of the Laowa 10mm f2...these are tiny gems on a small body 😏
A 1-inch or a m43 sensor size is probably the best compromise for a resonabla portable camera aimed at vlogging and video, with the added ability to get you decent photos. But it is still hard to beat the Sony x3000, DJI Osmo Pocket or GoPro for size, portability and video capability.
Great episode again. It feels like stopping the Olympus down to -0.33 or even -0.66 would have taken out the strong highlights in your face and keep some of the skys blue. Btw, just a thought: what about the Oly 8mm/f1.8 fisheye? Sure, needs defishing in post, but that shouldn't eat up too much processing power while enconding the whole show anyway. What do you think?
Nice comparison. There's definitely more stretching in the Sony 14mm lens. They should have gone with at 16mm instead. But the Sony lens has more Toneh inside your room and looks better during this video.
Here's where I'm at with Toneh now, as a viewer of vlogs: no Toneh at all is needed, provided that the image is soft and nice. As soon as sharpening is introduced, you need the Toneh to combat the harsh cheapness of the sharpened look. One of the best Vlogging images I've seen is this fun German photographer who attaches a GoPro Hero 7 on his camera so he can show and explain how he decides what to photograph. It's just in the "natural" colour profile, 5000 Kelvin (GoPro auto white balance reportedly takes processing power away from the video decoding), no sharpening and some nice colour grading in post. I'm telling you, that's the way to go. Save the Toneh for the cinematographers

the aspherical elements and tele centricity are the reason for that extreme stretching effect on sony. as it is full frame it is more difficult to make the lens telecentric.
Nice. The Olympus has weird yellow tones with the color “science”. (same thing on Panasonic) I’m a Pani boy. I suggest compensating on white balance. You can keep it auto white balance but go to the WB settings and click the color box adjuster thing over to B1 or B2 (this brings in slightly more blue and reduces the awful yellow tones.) This way it will look less like you're in 1970s cigarette-smoke-filled yellow crustiness.
