Hi Gary. I recently picked up blacksmithing as a hobby and have basically binge watched all your videos for inspiration and guidance! I can see why you do what you do, I'm totally hooked. Making a set of tongs like these is my next goal as pliers just dont cut it! Gary, this is absolutely brilliant, I have seen quite a few videos on tong making and most of them are somewhat complicated. You have made the process simple and easy to follow and I will immediately attempt to copy you and make myself a couple of pair with longer blades as I am not a farrier and don't really need the small round nosed ones.

Yes, in some ways it is easier..Not sure where I got that hammer from but it certainly won't have been bought new!
It is a nice looking light hammer . .I see a lot of people on RUclips using these huge rounding hammers to do even light work. I guess to each his own.

Had to comment on the gabapentin - I've known several people who were wrongly given this for general pain. Doctors "want" this to be a non-addictive pain killer, but it isn't. It's for epilepsy and shingles pain. Do yourself a favour and stop taking it unless you enjoy all the side effects. I love your videos.
Now I have been on it for some considerable time I don't seem to have the spaced out feeling anymore. It certainly seems to be doing the trick!

This is way out of date ...... hoping they managed to get your hand sorted in the end. I've been on gabapentin and its predecessor for 17 years now for nerve pain from pancreatitis. Spaced out stage don't last very long and it has been a godsend to me, along with low dose amitriptyline and with morphine for really bad days. Take no notice and carry on ! I'm 72 and far from ready to give up. Got a good old forge set up and off to collect a 200+ kg anvil next weekend. Going to be fun - previous experience....striking for the local smith in the mid 60s

Good schooling lesson, Gary. Like a previous comment, forging flat stock to shape tong looks far easier than using ~3/4" round. Did you butt weld the reins, scarf or taper to weld?
Creamhorses just a butt weld, plenty good enough!
I've always been taught to position the horn on the same side as your hammering arm. Why is it that farriers do the opposite?
wayne russell, I don't know a blacksmith or Farrier who uses an anvil with the horn under their hammer hand! It's just not right! If you have it under your tong hand you can use the whole anvil stood basically in front of it. If it's the other way round you have to keep moving from left to right. I guess what ever suits but no good for me...
hey, where do you get the coal, I'm from the uk to, but I'm confused between coal or propane... Hmmmmm, newbie, help woould be appreciated, thank you.

I don't use coal but I get my Coke from my local fuel supplier. It's the cheapest place. You could probably get it from your local Farriery supplies as well but would be more expensive. If you have a propane forge and can get propane easily it's much cleaner than Coke or coal. I have difficulty getting propane here, I fill the truck up from a garage miles away.

giv the Gab a little time the space cadet effect will pass iv been on it for 4 months it works they may need to in crease your dose or # of times per day me 4oo mg x3 per day with neproxin 375 x 2 per day neither works at all alone together im mostly pain free and the space cadet passed after 1 month apx.
Might have to give it up as my blood pressure has hit the roof. I'm on 900mg three times a day with 1000 mg of paracetamol.. Not really working but don't want to up the dose any more..
thats why to much gab iv been diagnosed with bad Nuropathy in both legs ont top of R.A. the pain is to the moon now the gab 400 and the naproxin 375 work well and am mostly pain free most of they time but it taks the combo neither works a dam alone !!!!!!!!!!

Well spotted! Not sure yet, it's a flywheel with a brake disc bolted to it. I'm going to use it as a base for something, not sure if it will be a small table or a lamp..
