  • My thoughts on the Pathfinder School's Intermediate Pioneer Scout Class. This was a 4 day, 3 night survival course designed to prepare someone for a 72-hour survival situation that goes longer than expected.
    The class was instructed by Corporal Sean Kelly from Corporal's Corner ( / recall5811 ) and Joshua Enyart, the Gray Bearded Green Beret (www.youtube.co....
    It was fantastic experience all around and I learned a ton. It was fun, challenging and absolutely relevant to a survival situation.
    I also talk about the gear I will be taking to the Pathfinder School's Advanced Class, the importance of minimizing your kit and a few more strategies for success at the school.

      They have a correspondence course on dvd that is really good. I think its like $50. Well worth it. I made a land nav/map making video last year that might be helpful. I just signed up for the Intermediate Class next April. I completed Basic already. Can you answer a couple of gear questions I have about the Intermediate class gear list: 1. I am reading the cutting tools to include both a carbon steel knife AND an axe, correct? Was your hatchet approved? I notice a saw is on the Basic and Advanced class gear list, but not the Intermediate. Is that correct? Seems odd. 2. For cover, it says, “1 queen wool blanket, and 1 twin wool blanket, or 3 twin size and a 6-8’ natural material tarp. Should it read, “A 6-8’ tarp; in addition, either 1 queen plus 1 twin wool blanket, or 3 twin blankets? Was your queen blanket alone sufficient? And was your poly tarp approved/allowed? Lastly, What did you use for your rope/tubular webbing? Thanks!

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  4 года назад

      DannyH Sure thing. Make sure to sign up to the Pathfinder Learning Center on FB. They do last minute updates there including gear. They try and mix it up each class. We had the option of either a queen or 2 military wool blankets. I used a queen for intermediate and for the advanced class I used a military blanket with a plash palatka. You want a good knife and skills to carve with it. A small light sharp hatchet (not an axe). I think we used a 21” Bahco dry wood blade for intermediate and a 24” for advanced. Get good at making a bucksaw. I made something too large and heavy. Make it small and light, but solid. Dan Wowak has a really good design. The strapping was used for shelter building. They show a bunch of different stuff. Make sure you have what they ask gear wise, a good poncho, wool socks, good boots, and keep it as light as you can. Big packs hurt a lot of guys. Get used to rucking, you have to do a lot of it and it gets heavier each day. Mindset is key.

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  4 года назад +2

      DannyH The poly tarp was ok for the advanced class. Most used a 6x8 canvas tarp from tractor supply or some place similar. Those have a nasty water proofing on them, gets on your skin and gear. You could make something nicer out of canvas drop cloth and water proof with boiled linseed oil

    • @dannyh9010
      @dannyh9010 4 года назад

      @@EnduranceRoom Thanks for the speedy reply! I carve all the time, so I think I’ll be ok there. I’ll have to get a queen blanket. All of mine are twin military type. Good advice on the buck saw practice. During my Basic, it literally rained the whole time. One of my notes was taller boots! Definitely going to keep the pack light. Ounces=pounds and pounds=pain. I think I will make my own tarp. The canvas ones I see for sale are super heavy and smelly.

      @@EnduranceRoom Tonight I made my first ever buck saw using the Coalcracker design. I got a dead standing stick that came down off of one of my maples. To make it, I only used the saw blade, my knife and #36 bankline. It turned out great! It is a sturdy and easy to build design. Thanks for the help!

    • @dannyh9010
      @dannyh9010 4 года назад +1

      @@EnduranceRoom Yeah, the canvas one at our Menards store weighs 4 pounds, 12.8 ounces. I made a 6’x9’ sil poly tarp for a minimalist hammock camping tarp that only weighs 12.4 ounces and would love to take that instead. I know the gear list says “natural material 6x8 tarp”, but is there skills deliverable reason not to take my tarp instead and save the 4 pounds?

    Have you seen the channel Justin Barbour: 68 day trip across Newfoundland. Fantastic series to compare what you need in a pack for advanced class. If you look at what he took, and subtracted what he had for a raft and set-up, stuff for the dog, camera gear, what is left is very minimal.

    Going to the intermediate class in April. I'm pretty excited, but definitely need to work on bowdrill before I go. How well did you have bowdrill down before you went? Thanks man!

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  2 года назад +1

      Nice! Thats awesome man. I didn’t have my bowdrill together and struggled with it. They walk you through it pretty thoroughly. You got plenty of time to practice though. Get good at natural materials for a bird’s nest. Tulip poplar is the stuff. The bow only needs to be about thumb size in diameter and about as long as your elbow to finger tips. The fire board needs to be dry and of reasonably soft wood (tulip poplar). The bearing block can be made out of green wood, fat wood or the same wood as the fire board. Smooth and steady using the whole length of the bow. Corp has some good videos going over it. Any questions, happy to help. Cheers

    Jess, Thanks for your videos. I'm headed to the intermediate class in August 2022. I plan on using the medium alice pack. I am adding weight for ruck training. I am considering not using the frame for the actual class. The blanket and tarp in the pack, almost everything else in a haversack. What are your thoughts...frame or no frame? Thanks, Dan

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  2 года назад

      Thats awesome Dan! The Medium should be great with or without the frame. I would suggest a dump pouch on your belt for collecting tinder. They will probably let you take it. The haversack kind of gets in the way and you definitely want to stream line and minimize as much as possible. They had us make pack frames pretty early on, so you may or may not be using the pack too long. Personally, I would do the frame, stock straps and belt with tarp rolled up on the bottom, inside of the pack blanket, clothes, bushpot with food (i used pemican (fat and protein)), water bottle and cup on outside pocket, other Cs in the other pockets. I wrapped my bucksaw blade up in my cotton cloth. Saw was one of the first projects, so be solid there, and work on the bowdrill. Its a great class. Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions leading up. Cheers

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  Год назад +1

      I think they changed the policy after I went. They want everyone on the same page. It is honestly a good thing. They cover a lot of good stuff in all their classes and basic is the foundation of it all. I would say it is 80% of what we do in the woods. Intermediate introduces a bit more complex material, and then advanced takes it all and shifts most of the focus onto practical application, where they aren’t showing you as much as you are out doing. It is a great experience to have, as they will press you harder than you would on yourself. It really teaches you how much more you are capable of.

      It was pretty slim. We were told to pack food for 4 days, and then it got stripped down to half rations. It wasn’t bad. The advanced class was no food except whatever we could forage. They kept us pretty busy though, to really even worry about eating. They used a lot of psychological pressure to stress people over the course to simulate the effects of real world stressors. It was an interesting experience. Lot of fun, but at the time, it had some intensity to it.
