Totally agree with the video, just wanted to say that I've found an angle grinder with a thin cut off wheel works the best to cut the outside. The cutters squish in the metal spiral leaving a jagged edge that often rubs on the inner cable
These are the best. Thanks for doing what you do!
Love these quick tech tips. Love to see this as a regular segment.
ive been a mechanic for 15 years and done over a dozen engine conversions. Ive always purchased throttle cables. Thanks Guys.
Thanks. I need to make a new throttle cable very soon for my rare car that no one has heard of, so this is just what I needed.👍🏻
I have the feeling this video might be sponsored by Hughes Performance. I just dont know why. ;D
Good job as always, Al!
I thought Al wanted to colour coordinate with his drill and cutters. Definitely a parody of "Blue Peter" UK long running children's TV series.
Thank-you Alan for another QUICK TECH tip, I find the series very helpful so keep it up
Its like you knew I was coming to ask you to make a cable to fix my cruise control.
I suddenly need a new transmission from Hughes Performance!
awesome video as per usual, Al.
Awesome tech video and actually really helps me with an upcoming engine conversion
Hey there, I used this exact process to create a modified cable for my Austin Mini Cooper's k20a2 swap. Right on the money and I had the cable modified and on the car in about an hour. Thank you so much for the clear explanation!
Nice work guys. I used to work on the production line making cables (mainly hand brake) for the OEMs. One extra thing the OEM does is inject a small amount of what I'm assuming was lithium grease down the tube prior to installing the cable.
I'm really liking this channel. This format video is great. Good info, simple and very useful to the home DIY. Cheers.
Great Guide here! I replaced my Vespa px-150 cables with Teflon cable housings and coated cables. They are in fact slicker than greased lighting.
I was waiting for the e throttle comment lol nice one Yoda
Awesome, thanks very much, really helpful.
Thanks to The Skid Factory Team!
More great content, thanks Skid Factory!!!!
Just when you think the vid is over and there is that little bit at the end love it guys great tip I’ll have confidence putting a fawned facing plenum on my turbo 1fz and being able to make all new cables 👍
Quality quick tech. keep them coming
I need to do this on my project car. Thanks so much for this!
Perfect. Great tutorial. Thankyou
Keep it coming, good stuff, thanks!
Thank you, love these videos.
Some of the bicycle brake cables do have teflon liners. I had to put this out there because I just fixed my bicycle and bought that literal cable that Al has in his hands; Teflon liner with a metal cover wound over the teflon liner :)
anything decent these days has a Teflon liner at minimum. even under ten bucks
Weird.... Thanks for this info even though it's a bit late, funny how you guys are the reason I'm considering e-throttle and now I know how to make a custom length cable one 😆
You guys kick ass. Let's get after it.
Nice and simple! Good stuff.
Thanks for your video mate you have saved me heaps most appreciated 👍👍👍
Awesome vid! Always wanted to know how to make up custom accelerator calbles 👌🏻👌🏻
Excellent lesson.
Man, wicked video. Very informative and easy to understand :)
Awesome! Knew this was all fairly straight forward, but seeing your full process is great.
Also sweet, found the Teflon tubing as cheap as $1.30 a foot and a 2000mm cable for only $3.35!
Would love to know what its called
Great video, just what I needed to see thanks!
I like these how to do it videos. as well as all the skid factory subjects.
Nice work Al.
Thanks mr. Yoda always a pleasure
LOL That ending gave me a good laugh.
Super helpful. Can apply this to my mang mang powered chevy luv...
Cheers boys! Love your content👍🇦🇺
Good video, I've always run a little solder on the ends of the cable befor I cut it so it doesn't fray & spread out. Thredlock on the screw on nipples once I have the right position. (had one unscrew once.)
Awesome video and nice to know how to work on cars it a excellent idea and excellent video
Deadset I’ve been thinking for ages how to make a throttle cable for my 1jz swap thanks for the info
Great explanations on problems faced by cars builders
Bullseye. Perfect video for me as i faced the same issue and was unable to get the right cable. Thanx
Awesome vid....found you through MVDBR Enduro...
Insanly usefull information for people who wouldn't normally think you can pull oem throttle cables apart.
cheers al, very handy
Great tip
Great video.
You took the most mundane subject and made it interesting. That, my friend, is your super-power.
Great video guys. Is Hughes Performance on board now as an official sponsor?
Great content thanks 👍
Cheers guys, just mounted a motorbike engine to a off-road go kart and the clutch cable ended up 300mm short, super helpful!
Love it. Learnt most of what I do from you. The rest comes from being stuck on the side of the road LoL.
cheers Al and Woody
Good info as always boys, I need to redo mine after my turbo melted through my outer.
I might have missed it, but it looks like Al only taught us how to make a _shorter_ cable, not a longer one. How do you reattach the proprietary factory pedal bits to the end of a new, longer, cable?
Great explanation of a topic I've never had to think much about though! Handy info to have.
Get creative.
You wouldn't attach two cables. You can recreate the proprietary bits with solder or a like sized cable end. Look up soldering cable ends, there are a fair number of tutorials on RUclips.
You guys are stating the obvious answers, but I'm expecting Al to have a non-obvious, and likely much better, answer. Much appreciated all the same. Hopefully he does a bit of a follow-up on this topic in the future.
@@TheBrokenLife todd hit the nail on the head. If you're looking for step by step you'll have to find someone who's done it for your application, documented it, and published it.
If you have a stick/mig welder you can earth the lug you screwed on and touch the end with the stick to melt the lot together. Neat and contained - won't ever fray.
The original inner cable ends can be reused in some cases if you have a little blow torch/mapp gas and some solder. Motorbike shops will also sell solder on cable ends.
Always enjoy the vids lads would just add I always solder my end fittings once I know there set right ......probably me just being an old Arse !!
So good we have a Factory for Skids
Dont knw where you get your cable housing for your push bike. I buy buy them with the teflon liner and linear steel cable not spiral so the housing doesn't kink plus you can get it in bulk. The problem is the tube diameter inside
Bike cable, Shimano m-sys has the teflon inner (can get colours other than black) and can get is on 50m rolls :)
Great video on cabling. Always pick up bit of knowledge from The Skid Factory videos.
6BT in a Mini? is that next build project??? Ha ha
This unintentional Asmr
cheers Alan
Thanks man!
Can you guys can make a video on how to customize a throttle body(with the cable) to connect to a custom aluminium intake manifold? like from a factory top side tb to a horizonal sideways intake manifold.
Killin' it al!
Anyone agree al would make and awsome shop teacher?
He IS our shop teacher
Yeah but we have all seen the death glare he can give when prompted with a silly question or comment from the internet, could you imagine being on the wrong side of that?
some young guy “hey teach, how should I do this ridiculously simple task...?”
Professor Al, “google it!”
My dad learn me how to make new cables on my bike when I was 8-10 years old. When I got older and start working on cars I many times got use of that exerience.
I've been missing your uploads ie not getting your notifications
Don't forget that, if one is mixing and matching parts from different vehicles, the pedal travel (measure on the cable) needs to match the required throttle travel (measured on its end of the cable. You don't want to leave unaccessible throttle travel (e.g. max 85% throttle opening). And you don't want to have the pedal tearing the side off the throttle body either. They have to match fairly closely. For consideration.
Ya'll should do a track car build and race against Marty and Moog
Josh Wolff the Nugget Garage show down cant be far away. Skid Factory would be building most of the car for MCM so it wouldn’t really work....
Not that anybody is pushing for a RUclips war just mates enjoying a good track day with bragging rites over some Wishbone and a few lemon squashes at the end of the day. Say Royal Nasho for shits a giggles...?
Send him $40,000 and he can.
You act like they're rich...
@@alexcorona stupid comment haha I love the RUclips comment section.
@@slothcunt8353 they didn't build the focus RS or the Vw gold r
awesome!
This really helped me, the throttle cable busted on my shit box.
I love you guy I actually learn if I could apprentice there I would but hold up when did he get all that grey don't be shy he said
I like this, in the states it's not hard to get a high quality stainless inner cable for super cheap, it's carried at Home Depot.
Thanks very much! I didn't think it would be so hard to get the accelerator cable for my Nissan Frontier. They want well over $100 because no one else is selling it. Absolutely ridiculous!
Cable caveat: use whatever you can "including pushbike cables" especially if your throttle linkage has bust in a crocodile infested creak.
Also pretty good for one take.
Moments when your arsehole is twitching like a rabbits nose, yeah to hell with proper any thing works !
Wireless accelerator is also acceptable in a pinch if you have a mate with you (tested in a Kombi, YMMV - "Go" "Stop"....)
"You can mount this on anything." Great! I'm putting one on my toilet flusher. And the basin tap!
hey al you can also make a small mould, and create the lead stopper at the end of the cable, instead of buying the ends...
Wow I just clicked on this video to get some info on this and to my surprise its Turbo Yota!
thankyou
Woody aged 10 years with that beard. You guys are great, thanks for all you do.
Another great video. Could somebody please tell me why in my cars user manual it says there must be 8mm possible deflection between the anchor point and the throttle anchor point? What I mean is when the cable is set, you should be able to press down on the exposed inner cable between the two points and deviate it 8mm. It is in bold, italic in the user manual so I assume it's important.
Can you please explain charge coolers vs. intercoolers vs. Radiators
those end thingy's with the bolt in them for the throttle body, what are they called, i'm needing to do exactly this job, i know they can be got through a motorcycle shop, i just need to know what to ask for, thanks,,,, keep up the good work
Okay, that's great but what if you have to make one longer? What do you do at the throttle pedal end?
Quality bicycle cables are perfect for making throttle cables. They have a Teflon liner and Teflon coated inner cable which is far superior to a lot of factory throttle cables.
It should be the same process for lawnmower right?
An old 86 Nissan pulsar i was driving had the throttle cable fray and jam on. I guess they weren’t using Teflon back then haha.
Didn't go anywhere anyways
I had to buy a little screw bit from the bike shop when I did my 12 ht
Did my handbrake conversion the same way.
How'd you do the y on the v12
Great stuff
can you do a video on how to make up an adapter plate for gearbox fitted to engine that is not meant to be?
Do you have a link to the adjustable brass throttle cable ends?
I literally gave up, yesterday, trying to buy the parts I needed to fix a cable in an armchair! Gave up and found a shop to do it!
Quality linear bike cables don't have those issues but paying 50+ for a cable is obviously not gonna cut it.
