My iron was spitting lime deposits (or something white) from the hard water in our area. (I should have been diligent in using filtered or distilled water instead of tap water!) It took a few cycles but I finally got the iron fully clean. During cleaning, the iron began spitting brown deposits and then black deposits on the towel I used to check the progress. Thanks! I opened the window over my sink and put a fan behind the sink to waft the fumes out. Vinegar (5%) is still an acid (acetic), and breathing it made me cough. I use the 40% vinegar to kill poison ivy, and you need some safety equipment when handling it. Rubber gloves, goggles, etc since it can burn. It does go away in the soil after while. So, this is not as dangerous, but still need caution in breathing it. Worked great! Only two rounds till the iron was clean. I only use distilled water, but one of my kids used regular, so not too bad. The soleplate had some black corrosion, so I used cream of tartar (also a mild acid used in baking) to clean it. I use it shine my stainless pots and pans. I would never have thought to use a rack in the sink. Genius, and made it much easier.
I've tried most of the methods on the web to clean the inside on an iron. Equal parts vinegar and water and straight vinegar etc. After doing this several times the iron was still spitting out black stuff (probably iron). Thought I was going to have to buy a new one. Then I had a brainstorm - try using a water pik, which many people already have. I let the iron cool after doing the straight vinegar, then I filled the reservoir of the water pik with distilled water, turned it on the strongest setting and placed the pik in each one of the holes on the bottom. I held the iron over the sink and went down one side and then did the other. Couldn't believe how much more gunk I got out. I did it twice to be sure. I couldn't find anyone else on the web that's tried this. Hope it works for you as well as it did for me.

Very good advice and technique, and I used a combo of old toothbrush and fingernail brush to speed things up and lessen the "vinegar time". Not a springtime romp in the park! Thanks for the video. Love the braids and brilliant eyes. Definitely somebody home in there!
I suggest diluting the vinegar with distilled water. I think "some" of the brown that I got out of my iron was maybe burnt vinegar when I tried it full strength. After I flushed it completely, I used 50/50 vinegar & distilled water & then followed up with all distilled water. Cleaning the residue off of the iron ports with a paste of baking soda/water worked great! This is at least a 45 minute project. And yes, a fan & open window is a MUST! LOL

Just been cleaning my wife's steam iron. It's one with a big water container. Excuse my English, Flemish guy here. Did the same process a couple of times. I saw a couple of nozzles that were blocked so I took a plastic bag, one of those flimsy see through ones, and filled it with vinegar. So when I place the iron inside the bag I could place it on flat surface horizontally like you would iron. The vinegar should be just be approx 1 cm high meaning inside the iron portion but not the electronics. This way you don't waste vinegar and keep it left standing longer to do its thing. After 2 hours the water was completely brown. I also poured some vinegar in the big container and started steaming the neigbourhood. A serious amount of damp comes out of that thing. I think it's good as new now.

Wife was surprised tonight. No more stains, pressure was steady, even (before some holes were blocked I guess) and it felt like new (her words). If you fill the plastic bag do it little by little so it hits the line even with the white plastic in the case of this video. So no overfill.
Rollis Karvellis I agree. I think I have permanently killed my clothes steamer by using tap water over the years. I have tried using vinegar to clean it but due to the way the water travels, the vinegar doesn't seem to get in there. I haven't quite given up on it but am searching for a solution. 😀
Something interesting you said caught my attention. You said distilled water should be used in steam irons. So if tap water isn't acceptable, then people should purchase distilled water just to use in their irons?
That was my theory for the tap water that I have; it is "hard" water that causes problems in sinks, faucets, and toilets. So for me, I was told distilled or treated water would be better for the iron to avoid mineral build-up. A city near me has "soft" water so my friends there don't have the mineral build-up. However, another viewer made a good point about minerals in the Dasani water that I use.
I got a second hand iron at the thrift store with the same problems. Your video demo really helped, but I went one step further to quicken the process and I took of 1/2 water & 1/2 vinegar and flipped the iron over the sink and poured it onto the iron slowly. The brown rusty crude came bubbling out of the holes and now I haven't seen it. I just repeated until it stopped surfacing the crude. I finished with q tips dipped in the solution.
I'm thinking a soak and dump out of the top a few times would have given the "stuff" an option to come out the top . It's possible you are forcing a lot of pieces of "stuff" out of the tiny wholes . Helped me out with ideas either way , thanks bunches 👍
Can I ask you this? I used also a vinegar to clean the iron and came out from the holes something like a liquid which was sticking, something like brown glue.

Oh I would be so nervous doing this over my sink. Vinegar is acidic & would would be scared it would mess with the rubber gaskets in the sink. I might give a go in the yard.

One of my very first video shows how I quickly make my house smell better. I take some kind of spray cologne and spray it over the air filter for the return air. It works super fast.
Try this might help too let the iron rest flat put the iron turn off keep 50 50 ratio of distilled water and vinegar mix only fill to max fill line use only button setting to steam turned in upright to on not sprayer and lay iron flat untill all fluid has drained out of all steam holes keep repeat untill all air holes has drained out hope this might help keep iron unplugged though
I tried vinegar in my steam cleaner but I think I waited too long to try and descale it. The steamer was simply too corroded with mineral deposits. If I obtain another steamer, I will clean with vinegar earlier and regularly.
@@TheKhwailed MY girlfriend uses vinegar every time she runs her dishwasher in the cleaning mode with dishes in it. Nothing has ever happened to her seals on the dishwasher so I would think this is extremely safe. Vinegar is used for so many different projects that need to be cleaned especially kitchen appliances small or large 😊

But it still needs a few more rounds with water/viniger mixture and a few rinsing with distilled water. After I finished, my two daughters at the end came to me asking for Pringles!! If you used unsure water, sediment may be burnt near the heating elements. If the iron was used on too high of a heat for a material, it may result in a lingering burnt odor.

When I clean my coffee maker at the first of the month, I do leave the vinegar in the water container for about ten minutes before running it though the brew cycle. I use distilled water in my iron and my steam mop. It’s actually recommend in your manual.

To cancel the smell you can use squeezed lemon juice, I would calculate it will also assist with dissolving the limescale build up

You can use citric acid instead of vinegar. It doesn’t smell like vinegar.
I tried this and my iron box is dead....😢😢😢😢😢 its not working anymore, the plate doesn't get hot

I really want to do this, but I'm worried about any rubber material or sealings inside the iron!
Bleach would deteriorate seals but I don't think an annual cleansing of vinegar would hurt the seals in the iron.
I know that acid destroys rubber. That's why I was worried about using viniger (which is a type of acid) to clean the iron from inside.

Richard Gardner Excellent suggestion. I made this video several months ago and honestly do not remember if I did so or not. When I clean my coffee maker at the first of the month, I do leave the vinegar in the water container for about ten minutes before running it though the brew cycle. (Then I put the violet vinegar in the bottom of of my dishwasher.) Thank you for watching and contributing! 😁😁😁
That’s a cheap iron. Why are you scrubbing the plate? If it smells. Throw it away.
I tried to use distilled water in my Rowenta and it was a mess! Water kept leaking out. Didn't know what the problem was until I checked user manual!

@@KimTownsel Very first time I used it, I used distilled water and water just came out the holes. I looked at the manual and it said not to use this. I used tap water and everything was fine, but now I have mineral deposits.
@@alittlebitofeverything6731 I have a super expensive Rowenta and the manual said the same thing and I have always had hard water. Now it's leaking and getting white deposits all over my clothes. I'm going to try filtered water from my sink and see if that works. 😊
