Eliminator” is my favorite ZZ TOP record of all time.. 🎸 this was cutting edge for the guys.. cause they started experimenting with Synthsizers…on it and drum machines… a little… so they raved Into the 80’s! After being a hard driving blues band in the late 60’s and 1970s… “Afterburner” record magnified it even more with going more mainstream synth-rock.. They are Legends
The entire Afterburner LP is brilliant. Smooth blend of blues rock, new wave, AOR, soft rock, and pop. That synthesizer works wonders, it expands on their already brilliant formula.
I was 23 years old when 'Afterburner' came out in late August of 1985. I bought the album the day of it's release and when I heard this song I was bouncing off the walls. Awesome song, one of the best to come out of the 80s in my humble opinion. So here I am in the year 2020 and I still love this song as much as I did on that first listen in 1985. Thank you ZZ Top for all the awesome music you guys have made for us.
I was 18 years old. I remember falling asleep next to my girlfriend on her living room floor. Woke up at 3AM and this video was playing on MTV. It's cool how a song can take you back to an exact moment!
Amen brother . it happened to me in the 80s . different song but it took me back to that moment to this day . it was 1986 . i fell asleep on the couch with her . i will remember until i can't .
It was a sunny Sunday afternoon, and I was on my way to to get Baskin Robbins, wearing shades, with the sunroof open -- then suddenly, this came on. I was stunned that something so magical could have possibly ever been created at one time, in audio form (1985). I'd forgotten how amazing it was.
So smooth. One of those songs that just goes deep, beyond the ears to the cockles of the soul. For me, ZZ Top was a staple in my life growing up. As a guitar player, I went through several of their albums learning their songs and then playing them in my band's sets. Billy, never a flashy player, but oh so tasty, slow hand man with the touch. That boy can play. RIP Dusty.
My favorite ZZ TOP song. I saw them in Phoenix and they are awesome. My Mother went with me and she liked them too. My Mother sadly passed away in 2014 and I treasure that concert with her. Great memories.
With age of 12 a Biker from our Village gave Zztop Greatest Hits to me and for 36 years now I am a huge fan of the tres Hombres. Zztop is not just music, it's a lifestyle, I can't find the right words. Bless you three for the next 50 years. Greets from Northgermany
What a kick ass rock & roll song with awesome guitar riffs. What a great band. This band will go down in history as one the best bands from the 70's and 80's.
I just learned of Dusty Hill's passing away. I just thought to play this song in his honor. Rest in peace oh bearded one, you were truly one of the greatest. I couldn't help but shed a tear. This song takes back to 1986. What a great year it was.
The Afterburner album seems so underappreciated. When I was 11 in the mid 90s a neighbor gave me some old cassette tapes of his (that being one of them), and I always loved this song especially. It's like synth blues and AOR all at once!
+JPMcFly1985T It wan't under appreciated at the time. I was in my mid 20's this LP was HUGE. Radio play all the time. People who were not into ZZTOP were right away then.
+JPMcFly1985Two I suppose so, I don't really know what's on radio these days. No matter, there's TONS of great "album rock" out there from the period that may not get heard because of tight playlists. Afterburner is a one of a kind LP, We always love it.
What's sad too man, is that rock music PERIOD isn't very popular now! Since 2010 its been mostly pop, rap, and dance music, but I do listen to AOR rock radio loads
+JPMcFly1985Two Iagree completely and so do tens of millions of folks. Of course, it's primary to my era, I was in high school in the 70's, Still, the music lived (lives) on, but the absolute garbage being promoted is kind of vomit. The pop stuff, like Spears, Timberlake all of it really is crap writing . We listened to everything from Zeppelin to Joni Mitichell, and black music, all of it. But not rap, which isn't even music.
ZZ Top are the coolest guys on the planet (and in space, apparently). They've always been true to the music and they have their own sense of style. Gibbons really works on his tone and cares about what he does and the musicians who came before him.
Love Dusty. After Geddy Lee, my fav bass player. Geddy only has a soul patch, Dusty obvi the full beard. yet both sing in the upper keys. Amazing, RIP Dusty.
just love that distinctive ZZ guitar sound......know your ears are gonna be happy.......but really so sad Dusty is gone from us.....rest in peace man.....
RIP Dusty. Thanks for all the great music over the years With this song being the best you guys ever did. I was in 10th grade when this came out. It never slows down! thanks again
Been singing it wrong since 86. I always thought Billy was saying... Changes, skateboard changes. Changes, rearranging love. Today was the first time I heard Afterburner in maybe 2 decades. Still a great album. But this has always been my favorite song on it. The verses sound like angels singing.
My all-time favorite song. Saw them 4/24/1986 and 6/6/1986, probably the only band I saw twice on the same tour in the forty years of going to concerts. After all these years, I STILL have my ZZ-Top keychain that I got at Saratoga during the June show. RIP Dusty.
Oskar OH Rough Boy was a side we rarely hear from them and it's one of my top ZZ songs, but there are soooo many other great ones. And I ain't talkin' Legs or Sharp Dressed Man. More like Manic Mechanic, TV Dinners, La Grange, Cheap Sunglasses to name a few.
Oskar OH I like basically the entire Afterburner album. Best tunes to pop your cassette and speed down the road on. Planet of women, Can't stop rocking, rough boy, sleeping bag, and this one are among the best

ZZ Top (and most other bands in 1985) adding tons of keyboards to their music. And as they should!!! Thats how bands evolve. I love this album and song especially!! Eliminator will always be THE ONE tho
Loved ZZ Top the first time I heard them on the radio. I always stop what I am doing and move to this song as the beat is so hot. My wife tells me I am crazy for playing all the music I love am my silly moves, but I just tell her I LOVE MUSIC like this, this is not just music, this is ( FANTASTIC ) music.
I have very diversified tastes in music. I have been to many, many concerts.....lots and lots of bands. These performers are the very best overall at delivering the full enchilada. I'm really not even able to define favorite this or those type decisions on a lot of topics. But, ZZ has always delivered the very best concert experience for me!
#1 Most Underrated song AND video of all mf'n time! "I couldn't even get you on the phone" How much has changed... The world has lost so much of it's cool...........
On a flight to China, I found this song on the airline playlist, must have repeated it a hundred times. Much respect to the talents who could create such a gem
I remember saving up my allowance and buying the cassette as soon as I first saw this video when it debuted on MTV. I would still have the cassette today, but I wore it out by playing it so much 😎
My dad had a jazz band after WWII. He always the drummer was the most important member. A great drummer doesn't follow the music but pushes the band. Frank is one of the best!
The coolest band and the most respect. Caught them in Arizona recently, and they played Tush with a recorded Dusty singing the song, while the band played in the background. Classic and full of respect. Thank you for that. I've seen them twice in concert and they are classic...
Saw ZZ Top live on the Afterburner Tour 1986 Worcester, Ma.. The stage was setup to look exactly like the dashboard of their Eliminator Hot Rod. When concert started, the fuel gauge was full. They were the biggest band at that time w/the Eliminator and Afterburner albums and tours.

YEP BEST SONG THEY EVER MADE ANYWAYS ARE YOU SAVED LINDA STURM ? HAVE YOU ACCEPT JESUS AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR AND RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE I COULDN'T IMAGINE HEAVEN WITHOUT YOU
Billy Gibbons once told me that the tone he achieves on his lead guitar licks is meant to be the musical equivalent of a finely tuned engine of a badass hot rod as it sleeks down the highway, wide open.... BRAVO!!!
So diverse. That’s why I loved them
They met Depeche Mode and were inspired by their use of drum machines and other electronic thingies!
Drum machines a little lol you mean a lot dude
The entire Afterburner LP is brilliant. Smooth blend of blues rock, new wave, AOR, soft rock, and pop. That synthesizer works wonders, it expands on their already brilliant formula.
Hector Martinon. yep. quite the disc indeed!!!!
I think afterburner is their best album
Well said!👍
They understood rhythm, tempo, and the genius of simplicity from the beginning.
No matter how bad circumstsnces I find myself in , this track always lifts me up ❤
same here, found my one :D
Im 52 this is true music! Actual skills with guitar, drums, and vocals! Please bring it back!
I'm 59 and agree 😁

Fact.

This is just a ROCKIN song! From the guitar work to the drums, non- stop music all the way! 👍
The coolest band and the most respect. Caught them in Arizona recently, and they played Tush with a recorded Dusty singing the song, while the band played in the background. Classic and full of respect. Thank you for that. I've seen them twice in concert and they are classic...

What an under appreciated song (and album)
Saw ZZ Top live on the Afterburner Tour 1986 Worcester, Ma.. The stage was setup to look exactly like the dashboard of their Eliminator Hot Rod. When concert started, the fuel gauge was full. Half way thru concert, fuel gauge showed half a tank. When they were finishing the concert, gas gauge was moving to empty. Some say this was the end of the old ZZTop but I think it’s when their vocals harmonized perfectly.
