From a Mixer to a Lamp: Reverse Engineering
I was bored. While I was skipping around the house, I saw the box in which we put the things we don't use anymore. I curiously opened the box and looked at the things inside. I saw that our mixer was in it. Is it broken? I was thinking out loud when my sister arrived. "Yes, it cannot be repaired because there are no spare parts" she said. It made me sad. We used to bake cakes and pastries using that mixer.
I used to stare at it and always wondered how it worked. The idea of opening and looking inside of it made me very excited. Then I had an idea. I turned back and "Can I take it? I would like to look inside of it," I asked my sister.
"Of course! But be careful," she said. At that point, Little Star was digging the box and the things in it grabbed my attention. My eyes sparkled. "Can I take these too?" I asked. "Of course you can," my sister replied.
“Thank youuuuuu!” I screamed and dragged the box to my room.
I looked the mixer up and down. Then I took the screwdriver. Which screw should I unscrew first? I considered. I started with the big one. Then I removed each piece one by one. I drew what they looked like in my notebook. It was so exciting!
Inside the mixer there was a motor with gears, plastic parts, tiny screws and thin wires. Oh, it looks like the motor of my toy car!
One of the wires of the motor was broken and the plastic parts seemed to have burned out. I guess that's why it was broken. I held the motor. I can use this! I contemplated. I remembered the things that I read in a book called “Machines and Inventions”.
I opened the book and looked at the images. Apparently, if a motor spins fast, it can produce electricity. I considered it, then I surfed the internet a bit. I encountered an experiment. A similar motor was used to light a bulb. I wanted to try it too!
I attached wires to the motor, and connected a bulb to the wires. I attached an arm to the motor and turned it fast. Yippee, LIGHT!
When I saw the light, I had the idea of making a lamp. I bent down and looked at the things inside box. I could disassemble parts from the materials here and use them. A light bulb, cables, a propeller to spin the motor and a body to connect all of these together… Then I drew my idea in my notebook to be able to think better.
For example… What if I ripped out my old teddy bear and turned it into a rabbit, and made it the body of my lamp. I could remove the bulbs of the broken lantern and insert them to my lamp. I could detach the keys of my melodica and make a propeller that spins the engine.
I was wrapped up in my work and many things had to be done. I started to attach and remove things!
I made a propeller from the keys and attached it to the motor. I attached the motor to the rabbit's hand and connected the wires to the bulbs.
    My lamp was ready.
I blew strongly to tried it out. HUFFF.... The propeller span and the bulb lighted up. Awesome!
    I was very happy.
I ran to show it to my family. They will love it!
This is Robi, the sculpture that I made using the remaining pieces!
