What I love about this movie isn't that the movie is too ''Hollywood clean'' and feels more authentic.
I don't really like the 2011 version and the casting of Daniel Craig was odd for Mikale and Naomi just put the bar on Lisbeth and Mara didn't quite capture the many sides of the character in the book.
I think the US remakes this and ''Låt den rätte komma in'' were rushed projects since I have to say the US public are a bit too lazy to read subtitles thus they remade these two project very fast.
I have a very soft spot for this trilogy not only because I am Swedish myself but also this felt more real not too flashy!

I actually love and prefer Rooney Mara in the Fincher version (although Noomi and all the cast was really great), and think the direction and casting in the US version was really great. However, I didn't like the casting in either version of Lisbeth's guardian because they both came across super creepy right away. Ultimately, you're right that the rush to get a US remake done failed in that they didn't seem to factor in how many people actually went to see the Swedish originals since the books were such a phenomenon, and they weren't interested in seeing a new version so soon. I hope Kelsea reacts to the next two films since we never got those as remakes, and also because I've basically forgotten everything that happened in the books.

I think Lisbeth felt a huge lack of agency in her life. He had been abused by man after man in various ways. She sees Mikael as a diamond in the rough, and chooses to invoke her own agency to initiate some sincere intimacy, though she doesn't completely understand her own reasons. Likewise, Mikael allows it for good and bad reasons. All very conflicted, complicated, and human.

Ya, but to be fair to him in that situation, I feel like he was as kind and compassionate as he could have been. I can understand why she behaved that way from a trauma perspective but she was still the one in the wrong. I think if he had a deep understanding of what was going on, maybe he would have been like "you know you don't have to do this right?" But we'll never know. Cause she was pretty much a stranger to him. He had no way of knowing she was coming from that place. He didn't seem to ask for that in any way and he didn't seem to ever approach his relationship with her with anything but care and respect. So I think he was almost as good of a guy as he could have been in that situation. Like ya I really do wish he put a stop to it immediately, but I don't necessarily FAULT HIM for not doing so? I've read the entire trilogy multiple times, and even the new books by a new author that try to continue the story, and the original Swedish trilogy definitely is the most faithful and best adaptation of the books. The new movie with Daniel Craig isn't bad, but it just doesn't fully capture the story like the longer ones do, and I think making them in Swedish helps bring the Swedish authors intentions out a little more.

The American version has powerful performances by Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. I enjoy their performances and while there are some scene differences (especially the ending discovery of the 'lost girl'), the tale is unchanged. My only regret is that the 2nd and 3rd films of the trilogy weren't filmed. Too bad. I especially enjoy the breakfast table scene with Daniel asking Salander to help him catch a "killer of women". Very very powerful. I may prefer these American characters over the Swedish actors (and not forgetting Christopher Plummer), all of these films are rich enough for me to enjoy rewatching them. Finally, you should definitely check out the original Swedish TV miniseries, MILLENIUM. But see it after all others - it has more supporting characters, and more fleshed-out as well. I would not have known these good additional scenes if I hadn't seen the trimmed-down movies first.

Excellent movie, though some parts are a very difficult watch. Something I tend to skip on rewatching the original trilogy. And I would certainly recommend the other two Swedish films (and books at some point, if you have the time or desire to). If nothing else to see the conclusion of the trilogy. The actress who plays adult Lisbeth is Noomi Rapace. This series is probably what she's best known for, initially anyway. She was also in Prometheus (yes the Alien franchise one), and though I tend to forget, one of the Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes films. Last I watched her in though was Close.
I was never big on the idea of Lisbeth being romantically involved with Mikael Blomkvist. I do think it works better as a friendship or found family, and not entirely sure why it happened in the story. It's been a while, but I think the book made it clearer she had dug into his life and all, so maybe more obvious she knows the kind of person he is. Not that he knows her well. Here it can feel a bit jarring.
As for the 2011 English version, it's ok, and a shorter less difficult and raw watch. Banger intro cover of a certain well known song too. And yes, Rooney Mara goodness (almost time for my yearly Carol rewatch). But the rest of the trilogy didn't get adapted in English last I looked. They skipped Girl Who Played With Fire and Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest, and instead released a movie based on a follow up book, The Girl in the Spider's Web. This time with Claire Foy as Lisbeth. That one is based on the first book not by the original author.

It's hard to say if Lisbeth was romantically involved with Blomqvist. Yes, she had sex with him, but in a "using the man to get off" fashion. Maybe the ending of the movie showed the beginning of a desire for love, which fizzled when she saw him with another woman. Kelsea MUST watch the last two Swedish films with Noomi Rapace. Her life story is horrific, and the movies only capture part of it . . .

Wow, I’m a year behind the times here in commenting, but I just noticed something I never did on previous watches. When Mikael is looking at the negatives of Harriet at the parade & it advances frame by frame as though it was a movie, still cameras couldn’t do that back then. You snapped the shutter, then advanced the film before you could take another. You wouldn’t get every inch as she turned her head. Unless it was a movie film, but the negatives do look like regular film. Anyway, great reaction. Not too many folks choose either movie so kudos to you for venturing outside the box!

    • @rschroev
      @rschroev 8 дней назад +1

There were motorized attachments for SLRs for advancing the film automatically and more rapidly. I don't know if those things existed already at that time, but if they did it's plausible for a fotojournalist to have one of them, and shoot pictures quite a lot faster than when advancing the film manually. Obviously not nearly as fast as a movie camera, but maybe enough to create the effect shown here.

14:39 No she is Martin's cousin, not his sister. Harriet was his sister.
16:55 Not all questions end up being answered. Plenty of mysteries remain unsolved. And obsession can be terrible. In the book there 's a marvelous exchange when the retired detective notes every career police office has a case like this, one that haunts them. Such can destroy someone. It is very human, this reaction.
17:29 Phone numbers are different in differnt countries. And over time, the pattern of the numbers change. Up until the 1950s all phone numbers in the US had a name then five numbers. Researched this for a play I'm writing.
21:21 Yes of course. Especially since he's not going to cross the street during a parade to get a view from teh other side, and for what?
21:57 Everything looked good. So he acted upon it. It was very cleverly done, this set-up.
48:10 Yes. That was her father, her mother's rapist and abuser.
48:53 No. We do NOT choose everything we are. We cannot. But what we can choose, we do. And either way, a serial killer and rapist must be stopped. She did not even kill him. She just let him die.
49:32 Yeah, he's going to prison. Did you forget that?
54:30 Prison. Teh reason he's in prison was explained at the very beginning. It was his sentence for slandering a businessman.
53:52 This is the first part of a trilogy. The relationship between these two has a long way to go.
58:18 LIsbeth is an AMAZING hacker. She simply created a new identity, donned some new clothes and a wig, then stole millions from the crook who framed Mikkel.

The three books actually written by Larson are excellent. The movies made from them are good as well. I did not read any of the later books because they were written posthumously without consent from Larson's estate.
Seeing Lisbeth shake watching the video made me shake as well. Horrible scene.
I also did not like the direction the relationship between Blomquest and Lisbeth took. But I did appreciate that she took the initiative and it signaled a level of trust she could not express otherwise. The author portrays her is as an autistic person who has gone through a lot of shit inflicted on her. And it is overall a pretty good job. But this one aspect doesn't work for me (as the father of an autistic child). It may be that a man trying to write a woman's view didn't work in this case. I did not think it was possible to stay so true to the story under three hours. The pacing felt better, while also giving much clearer information, the music, the dna 🧬 of the film, seeped from every pore of celluloid, to the editing. And Mara gave a captivating performance. In my opinion the 2011 remake is superior to this version. It fixes a lot of the things that confused you and the story threads are easier to follow, especially when it comes to the huge Vanger family. Also Rooney Mara is, to me, *the* definitive Lisbeth Salander. Noomi was very good here but I feel Rooney was able to capture more of the book's character in her performance. Also minor detail, here where I live phone numbers used to be much shorter in the past because there were less people who had landlines. I imagine it was the same in Sweden back in the 60s so it was kinda reasonable for them to think those numbers were phone numbers.

I feel this is one of the few instances where the remake was at least as good as the original, if not better. The main drawback of this 2009 version is that it perhaps follows the book a bit too closely, trying to include more threads of the plot at the expense of less clarity of what's going on. Don't feel bad about losing track of all the relatives; the book even starts off with a family tree to help keep track of the characters.

The book is excellent and I like both adaptations but I think the American is superior both with performances and the way it’s shot. The director David Fincher is a master when it comes to creating shots and establishing mood and the way he shoots and structures the film is excellent. You understand what’s going on much better. As someone who read the books multiple times, the way the 2011 version is structured is much better. Rooney Mara performs Lisbeth exactly as I imagined her in the book, and she also fits the exact physical description Larson provides in the novel. Daniel Craig is also a bit more believable as a playboy and they go more into detail about his and Lisbeth’s relationship which makes things much less confusing. Not to mention that craig is built a bit more like a former soldier. A lesser discussed contribution is the great performance the legendary actor Christopher Plummer gives as Vanger. He brings some characteristics which add a great deal to his character. In short you should definitely react to the 2011 version. I usually like foreign films more but I think fincher’s version is darker and just generally better

I also think the 2011 retelling works better and fixes the problems of the original. I think Mara better inhabits the role of lisbeth.
As for the sex scene between her and Mikael works better in the 2011 version, I mean Mikael was shocked too! 😂 This isn’t really a spoiler as the original is already done. But it’s explained more in the 2011 version.
Very intricate storytelling and you can get lost in it. But overall great movie, and definitely struck a nerve with audiences. We don’t see a female character portrayed like this very often, who doesn’t need a man to rescue her.
