I'm a stroke survivor of well over 30 years with left side foot drop and hemiplegia. I heard about these from a CIONIC users group. I've had these shoes a few months now and super happy with them. The big thing for me is that I am breaking that habit of circumduction (swing out to the side) so I feel a lot less fatigue when I walk and safer.
@user-co9xf4dq2k Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the shoes! Breaking out of hip circumduction can be really difficult but that's great to hear you're working on it. Keep me posted on your progress 😊
Ohhh, cute shoes! This is something I say to my stroke doctors and research studies all the time being it is needed for those of us that suffer from foot drop. I just bought a pair of shoes last January (Drew brand) after 7 years of wearing the same pair of shoes. This new pair fit my AFO but cost me $189.00!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think the Cadense look promising - however the tall base makes me leery. I have found I need less grippy (impossible to find in regular shoes) and flat. I just had a Brostrom procedure yesterday at University of Michigan Medical to repair torn ligaments and tendons in my stroke foot from an injury. I won't be walking for sometime, but I am going to bookmark these shoes. I always say, if I win the lottery I am starting a shoe business for stroke survivors that wear AFO's! thanks for sharing this!
It’s crazy how quickly the cost of adaptive equipment, orthotics, etc. adds up (and isn’t covered by insurance in the U.S.). These shoes definitely aren’t for everyone. As time gets closer to needing a new pair, you can always revisit them with your stroke doctors and work together to see if they’ll be a good fit for you. Thanks for taking the time to share!
I had a hemorrhagic stroke in May of 2023. I don’t have foot drop and very few deficits, other than imbalance when I walk. I am a very positive person. I got to the hospital rapidly, I never smoked, drank, abused drugs and stay out 100 degree weather (I live in FL), lost weight, read labels, take my bp regularly and I take my meds! Would I benefit from these shoes?
I’m sorry to hear about your stroke last year. Thank you for sharing a bit about your situation. From what you’ve described, these probably wont be helpful for you as they’re made for people who have trouble lifting the foot when they walk, however, I’d recommend asking your doctor or therapist who knows your situation more thoroughly!
My Mom has a pair of these shoes and she won’t wear anything else. She is post stroke with foot drop. These have made a world of difference! Thank you Dr Susko!
Elyse, Thank you for making these videos. I have watched all of them. I had a stroke on 4/1/2024. I did start walking in 2 months, but I guess my posture was wrong so fluid came out of both my knees and it’s been swollen for 3 months. Also I have a tear in my shoulder rotator cuff from when I couldn’t move my arm and my arm was a “deadweight.” Can you make a video on these side effects of stroke. My Orthe PT has been great in helping me get better. 2 doctors and my nuero PT suggested that me to get Ortho PT. I wanted to share this because I don’t know if other stroke patients are aware of the difference in PT and they can get help from different PT. Thanks again for all you do!
@pennyliu5331 Of course! I'm sorry to hear about your recent stroke and other complications. I have a lineup of video topics but I'll definitely consider these. It is unexpected that orthopedic issues can actually stem from neurologic problems. That's also a great point about the different types of therapists. Just like physicians, therapists can specialize in different areas (like I'm a Neuro OT). Finding the right therapist is a huge component of your recovery!
How do I order this helpful shoe am from Lusaka Zambia? I had Hamorragic stroke in March this year , please kindly send me the link for ordering this shoe.
@user-ux7hb8sl4w They currently ship the U.S. and Canada, but may be able to ship you a pair. I'd recommend reaching out to Cadense support for questions about international shipping: support@cadense.com
@dr.kimberlyrowland1872 Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Yes, the slipping is a safety concern. It probably took me at least 6-7 times wearing the shoes to actually feel like I wasn't going to slip.
Like he mentions in the video, Clive still has some residual issues from his stroke. He still deals with foot drop but more so when he’s tired. That is his natural gait in the video.
@@clivekempson2236 I am also suffering from foot drop I used to drag my leg back in the days now am stuck on foot drop from 3 months .....my brain stroke was 2.5 years ago ..
Would you recommend using them for walking rehabilitation primarily at home due to the biofeedback or wearing most of the time to get the biofeedback in real-life situations as well?
@kathrynK303 Great question! As long as you feel confident and safe wearing them out, I'd recommend trying them at home and when you're out-and-about. Now, you may not be paying as much attention when you're out and may have more focus at home. However, I'm always of the opinion that the more practice you can get, the better. Repetition is key! ❤️
I have an issue I have charcot Marie tooth and I had an stroke. My feet are starting to bring my arch. I never had an arch and the bottom of my feet have broken the bones. This is a disease that comes in my family but also I have diabetes. What type of shoe should wear.
Thank you ELyse for your describtion .I am a female stroke survivor Hemipledgia on the left side.I developed plantar fascitis on the same foot and I am suffering and also my calf muscle got shortened. Can I benefit from Cardens shoes.
It really depends on your situation. Some people’s foot drop is worse than others and they’ll need to continue using their AFO. However, for others the shoe may provide enough support. I’d recommend talking to your doctor or therapist and getting their opinion since they know your specific situation!
Cadense shoes don’t stabilize the ankle like a traditional AFO. They work by helping the foot that drags glide over surfaces rather than getting caught like it might with a normal pair of shoes. Hope that helps!
@nypedestrian Good question! Honestly, it depends on your specific situation. I think you could wear the Saebo step with the Cadense adaptive shoe, but you might lose out on what really benefits you about the Cadense shoe: the low friction area which helps your foot slide and the use of that biofeedback mechanism if you're trying to improve your actively trying to improve your foot drop! I'd recommend ask your doctor or therapist about it, as they know your situation best!
They’re not specifically designed to help with over supination. They’ll mostly be helpful if you tend to drag your foot or circumduct your leg (because of the foot drop).

@LIMMORTALE-kb6dy I think it has its benefits, especially the gamification aspect, which makes it more likely to get increased repetitions. I used it during one of my internships in OT at a skilled nursing facility (2016). Unless much has changed, it was also a little tedious with the same music playing over and over again. If you have the disposable income to purchase one, go for it. If not, you can do very similar movements on your own! @LIMMORTALE-kb6dy $200 may be too costly for some. However, Cadense does offer 0% interest financing if a payment plan would be helpful. Also, these shoes don't restrict the movement of the ankle, they're not like a traditional AFO. So they allow for full ankle range of motion!
