I'm playing this for my college senior recital. The first movement still needs a little work, (mostly the high f) but is coming along really well. The third movement on the other hand.... YIKES it's a beast. I do wish there was a video or recording of someone else playing this. I mean, I love Alessi's playing (it's even better live), but it's always nice to hear a few different interpretations in addition to your own.
You know whats crazy? I am playing the vibe player in this video. And that alessi dude was amazing. Made the trombone sound like a different instrument.
This is amazing. Perhaps it's just me, but I feel that this style of music that Ewazen presents is more fitting for bass trombone. This reminds me a lot of his Bass Trombone Concerto. Again, it's probably just my preference.
I played the first movement for a recent audition. When I told the conductor what I was going to play, his eyes shot open wide. I don't think he was expecting it. I've heard this piece described as glorified "traveling music" for the trombone. Even if that's the case, there are many glorious moments in this concerto. Try listening to the second movement without feeling a lump in your throat. You could probably get away with performing the first two movements--to me the third is the weakest.
In my next life, I want to be able to play the trombone like Joseph Alessi.
Yes... There is a cd of the same name published by the Columbia University Wind Ensemble with Joe Alessi also performing the solo.
i miss playing... this reminds me of my friend, he's so good at tbone. he plays so beautifully, i loooove his solos

That's still an astonishing achievement, hitting those high f's with such strength on what is really a bass bone mouthpiece.
it's just an unlaquered bell, one that is very tarnished
i know its two years late but there is a great recording of all 3 movements on itunes
