- We take a quick off road trip into Afton Canyon, we check out Spooky Cave, aka Spooky Canyon, and then we do a little 4x4 drive out to the mysterious Mojave Desert Megaphone - the giant metal structure in the middle of the desert that looks like a huge megaphone on top of a mountain.
This video includes directions and GPS coordinates to the Mojave Megaphone and Afton Canyon.
These are the GPS coordinates mentioned in the video. You can copy and paste these coordinates into Google Maps or Google Earth:
The starting point, just off of Interstate 15 at the Basin Road Exit:
35.096839, -116.263855
Spooky Canyon:
35.031106, -116.329966
The Mojave Megaphone:
35.006159, -116.196492
My whole family has camped at Basin rd or Razor rd since I was 3 years old and I’m 18 now. A little over a year ago my grandpa passed away from a heart attack on his dirtbike so we made a little memorial with a cross and stuff at the base of where the megaphone is since we would always ride out there every time we camped. We’re going again for New Years and I can’t wait to see if more people have discovered it
What a tragedy , i read it and thought oh man , but at least he passed doing what he loved and the family he shared his life with,
Impressive video and great commentary. Well done.
As always, another great video. May try one soon . Thanks as always
This is a fun destination to check out for sure. I came across it a few years back when I had to detour Soda Lake due to impassable mud on the main stretch along the Mojave Road.
I've never heard of this, before. Kinda looks like a rifle scope.
Very nice directions for others to use to locate it. Thanks for sharing 🏆🌟
I'm thinking that it might be two old rocket thrusters welded together.
I've been there! I was there for easter camping off Rasor Road in my trailer. I made a video about the trip. Great vid.
Next time my sons and I head to Hodge Road to plink we will add this to our drive. Good video, keep up the good work. May ask you later for details if I can.
Wonderhussy did a video on another megaphone in Nevada. Same deal, up on a hard to climb ridge. It`s either a good prank or a heck of a story waiting to be told.
Same one .
Amazing Trip !
Awesome video! We hope to get out there soon! :)
Was just there again yesterday! It's still there.
Wouldn't a megaphone be shaped like a single funnel, not two funnels mounted together? And what, exactly, are both ends pointed at? So if this is not a megaphone, that leaves air compressibility and optics. An explosion of a percussion device placed in the center would direct sound energy equally and create no recoil, thus creating perhaps the worlds first research experiment in focused energy weapons. The planform does call to mind a rifle scope, and both ends being open could have allowed testing of various lens curvatures for quality assurance purposes. Or it could have been placed by a bunch of teenagers who needed to pass their shop class and wanted to prank us endlessly.
Cool vid. It’s like a real world Easter egg. Lol.😎
Apparently there is a man who grew up near the area who knows the purpose of it, but he has sworn to secrecy about it. No such thing as ETs so that can be ruled out. The majority of theories have narrowed it down to a drum, art project or prank.
We drove in from I-40 at Ludlow ,Ca then north across dry lake saw several survival shacks , and Bacon strip air field . Then Megaphone but was not able to climb up . Then drove to R_R tracks then west to Afton Canyon crossed water all in a 2003 Xterra 4x4 , trusty old rig never let us down , we gassed up at Ludlow pricey but ? Long day !
Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.
Audio based aircraft detector from the pre-radar days
We did this trip in 2017 ,drove north from Ludlow ,Ca across dry lake , past bacon strip long day
I've been allover out there!
Real life easter egg. 😂
Man your videos are incredible. A PBS station ought to nab you up!
Afton canyon, fnaf? Not a coincidence.

looks like an oversized sniper rifle scope :P
This was the OG Monolith
Do you get cell phone reception around in there? Great video!
No cell service (AT&T) until we got back closer to i15 .
And I have been there, November 2018.
They look like two liquid fuel rocket engine skirt extensions that have been attached together
looks more like a scope, wonder if you shine a light through it at night if it puts at cross hair on anything.
No.. Was just out there looking at it again on Saturday. I've learned that the OLD railroad not only goes right by, but it also had a east turn-off which is only about 100 yards from the megaphone. I thought that it might have been used to mount lights, but it's not facing toward either track (W, E, or S) so that doesnt make much sense.
Due to the proximity to the tracks, and the amount of work/effort it took to get it mounted where it is, i suspect it was put there by the railroad.. Why, I still have no idea..
Does any have the GPS co-ordinates for the megaphone?
Dude..The coordinates are in the info section of the video.
It's more like a telescopic sight, isn't it?
No, not at all.
Part of a rocket engine?
Can it be done with a full size truck?
That depends on the skill of the driver, tire type and size, and current conditions - but, we saw a 2WD van there on our trip.
@@TheNotaRubicon thanks ✌️ I'll try it this weekend, with a silverado 1500 Z71 stock.
If trying the route in a 2WD -- Bring shovels and a couple of buddies to help dig.
Nothing technical, but DEEP sand will bog down even 4WD.
Maybe aliens put it there. :)
looks like a drum
Radar target.
A BS’ers big prank.🤣🤣🤣
Probably just someone's artwork.
I hope you get out owning a Jeep lmao
