- The new Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway has witnessed 308 fatal and non-fatal accidents, resulting in 100 deaths and leaving over 300 people injured.
The 118-km-long expressway was inaugurated on March 12, 2023. The six-lane expressway reduces the travel time between Bengaluru and Mysuru from three hours to 75 minutes.
But the increase in number of accidents has forced the authorities to bring in several restrictions and safety measures.
The recent one is the ban on slow-moving vehicles in the expressway from August 1. What do motorists feel about this?
While the authorities have made some moves, will it make driving safer? We also look at some of the main causes of the accidents.

@@theearth3955 In Karnataka and NCR drivers drive recklessly and if not watched ,don't follow lane discipline and speed restrictions , Bikers and autos of Karnataka also think that whole road is owned by them and others have right in driving , they even drive on right side and threaten others Same happened in Delhi Meerut expressway but heavy fines eased the situation ,but not completely, problem persist all over India somewhere less and somewhere more .Government must mull the proposal to ban head lightbulbs more than 60 watt, and even their import made illegal , No motorcycle in central lane , banning tractor , three wheeler, tuk tuk on expressway may be some solution to reduce accidents , Auto challaning at toll booth as Agra expressway for speed and lane discipline may help
Good report by The Hindu team reporters. Quite often I find busses and trucks doing 40-60kph on the right lane. And even many wrong side driving. NHAI is not taking anything seriously!
NHAI is not responsible for how people drive their vehicle. NHAI can give us good expressways. Its people's responsibility to follow rules.
NHAI is a joke in many ways. While I agree that lane discipline is up to the drivers, NHAI is inhumanely collecting toll w/o giving any services and further rescuing the speed limit to 80kmph, thus defeating the whole purpose.

NHAI has given very good expressway to ppl of state it’s ppl and state govt responsibility to maintain and use it properly. If you don’t know how to use, just don’t go in expressway use state govt poorly maintained service road. Basis traffic sense is lacking in ppl and blame others for ur wrong doings.
I believe lack of awareness of rules or ignoring them, if they are aware of them, is the main reason for these accidents.
For example, you can see how that red Swift is entering the highway and cutting across the left lane, probably going to the rightmost lane, disturbing the flow of traffic in those lanes, maybe causing traffic in those lanes to break or change lanes which might lead to accidents.
Many such, like not staying in one lane, blocking the rightmost lane even if the vehicle behind is honking at them… we can go on.
Drive education can solve a lot of traffic problems and reduce traffic congestion and accidents.
Most of the drivers don't know even the basic traffic rules and drive at very high speeds and lose control of the vehicles ending in severe accidents. Many innocent lives are lost. I have travelled many times on this road and every time I see atleast 1or 2 accidents. Since most of them don't follow lane system they overtake from wrong side. Once I saw a speeding car coming from the opposite direction in the same lane and I had to take a sudden left to avoid a major collision, I don't understand how this idiots don't have a basic common sense. itsgood that the authorities have taken the decision to ban 2wheeler and slow moving vehicles.
Now they have installed AI cameras, they should heavily fine the divers who are exceeding the speed limits and subsequent offence their licence to be cancelled and vehicles should be seized.
It is safe until you don't exceed your speed.. Most of the accidents are drivers negligence.. Some people are wrongly portraying the express way..
People are not used to such sophisticated road and over speed naturally resulting in accidents. Govt after opening to traffic should have imposed low speed and gradually increase over time. At last now government is acting with regards to safety.

Three wheelers , two wheelers and all slow moving vehicles has been barred from NE- 1 ( Ahmedabad Baroda ) expressway since begening of it (2004). It is fenced throught its length on both side....
But this isn't an expressway. It's a tolled access controlled National Highway. That's what NHAI said in response. That's why the speed limit is 100. E-ways have a allowed speed of 120kmph

Day by day the development around this road is only getting ridiculous. Firstly, irresponsible drivers which forms a small fraction and lastly the great NHAI now calls it a "highway" and not an "expressway" (finally, that's what I had been telling). But they want the toll to be charged as per expressway? Horrible... absolutely looting.
I mean for guys like u it is ridiculous. For regular travellers like me it takes for me 2 hrs to reach from vijaynagar in Bangalore to Mysore destination..earlier used to take 4.5 hrs..yes 2.5 hrs saved ( r u going to give my time back) and u r talking abt toll,NICE road charges Rs170 toll for 30 km ride on the periphery ..guess what who. Is owner/ share holder MP from congress..but guess what will The Hindu conduct a program on it. No ? Wonder y?

Absence of lane discipline and people driving in the opposite direction in the same lane are serious enough reasons which the authorities are refusing to take cognisance..only by reducing speed, accidents cannot be stopped
At the foremost, awareness must be brought in the mind set of people. I am not taking NHAI sides here, but people who drive in cities, towns, villages are the ones who use these new roads. The curent cultural behaviour in India is that road safety is just something we shluld know during LLs and DLs. My self being from Bengaluru, have eveyday encounters with road hazards and near miss events. Even traffic police have become saturated. We cant expect people to careless in cities and careful in highways. It just wont happen. Bottom line, " awareness must be at root level". I want to kindly ask TH to make these articles in cities and pointout the issues.

Good reporting, lane discipline , overspeeding vehicles should be fined and ceased for few days as punishment, more patrolling , proper ign boards, and proper maintenance of roads is also helpful

give good fine a good monitoring by camera and even hidden cam to find the culprit like in Dubai..Dubai to Abudhabi we can drive at 160km/hr. Very few accidents.
The trick is not to hide the cameras in accident prone areas. Show warning signs so people actually slow down to avoid being fined.
Expressway is a great accomplishment, Our country definitely deserves such Highways. However people need to realize this and follow traffic rules and lane discipline. The same people, if they are in other countries they follow the rules strictly because of the fear of punishment but here they complain. This Highway is as par as US highways. However certain things can be always improved to make it more better and safer.

For future expressways in India , service lanes need to be double the width of the current ones with bikers having their exclusive path .Expressways need to have at least two more lanes in each direction , from three to five or six .Speed limit needs to be curtailed to 90 Kmh.Licences of reckless drivers need to be suspended or cancelled immediately.Unsafe , slow ,old and tiny four wheelers need to be banned.CCTV cameras need to be installed every 200 metres.This will ensure zero deaths and very few accidents.
I appreciate you guys doing a report on this. However, I don't think you should be reporting from the middle of or even the side of the main expressway/highway carriageway... it is too dangerous!
Ramps are not available while existing from highway towards service roads. Tyre bursts especially on the left lane is common due to no maintainance
If a hayabusa is a slow moving vehicle.. then I don't know what a fast moving vehicle is.
Recently i have been impacted a KSRTC bus hit my car from left side. Luckily noting happened as it was Tata Punch but there was no support no assistance and instead we have to move as i had my family and the biggest crime was we are not Kannadigas....such a unwelcoming people around us in such a pleasant weather city
It needs further study wrt to root causes of accidents. Just banning a few vehicles upon whims doesn't fit well. Did not see any of the banned vehicles involved in accidents at least in this report
The root cause of accidents is the lack of quality education. Low quality education produces low quality people.

Roads within private properties are safe.
This is the first Expressway in Karnataka, Slowly people will get used to things that needs to be done to prevent accidents.
Drive slowly. Only remedy. Do not put speed breaker in an express way. No wrong with our Hon'ble Prime Minister dedicating this beautiful expressway for the nation in general and our amazing citizens in Karnataka.
Problem is at the grass roots. Western nations have such highways and Auto Bhan does not have a speed limit. But the process for getting a driving license is very very strict and the consequences of making mistakes are severe. Here in Australia 2 or 3 mistakes means you can't drive for the next three years. Lanes are sacrosanct and people just follow speed limits and lanes and rules. Unless our RTO is reformed nothing will change. Population and vehicle volume is not a factor. Despite our large population, very few Indians have cars . Our car ownership is 20 times lower than US.
Its not the road its the drivers & the road awareness, its a express way not a run way. People think they are riding a jet. Not considering others on the road.
Also vehicles using express highways have to always keep the tyres in good condition... Tyre burst has been one reason of accidents

Motorcycle riders have much lower chances of survival in an accident. Whether or not, they are the causes of the accident, they significantly increase the chances of death. Same for three wheelers

Some drivers don't know the traffic rules how to take left or right turn ie 20mts for left turn means they immediately put indicator and take left turn which leads to severe accident minimum 100mts is required to put indicator to take left or right turn

first put auto speed camera with auto fine system ,using that put fine for drivers going in opposite lane.
If auto are allowed in Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, they need to pass the toll and from the start of the Expressway and to the toll, there are no ways to slip into service road, you can only slip into service road after you have passed the toll.
The road is very poor. No driving skill ,No system and a lot of hero driver.

I have seen in Bangalore majority of people are talking on mobile while driving and they go in front of the police but the police don't catch them
Roads are world class, some cars are also - but almost all Indian drivers obtain license without a proper stringent testing mechanism - there is a difference between putting a car in gear and rolling it and driving it safely - this difference is the figures these reporters are sharing ….
Accident is happening only bcz of lack of knowledge and awareness about how to drive where to drive how to change lane ,what is speed track etc....as am worked abroad there also have great infrastructure better than us but no accidents regularly,why their system of giving driving licence is strictly and strong...
If auto drivers are allowed on expressway then it no longer remains an expressway. Especially some Bangalore auto drivers who have no concept of checking mirrors before turning or changing lanes
It's a common thing in the south. See kerela bus drivers. Good roads will only increase the problem.
If people do not abide the traffic rules and many are frankly unaware of things like maintaining lane discipline, maintaining speed limits, signaling, not entering the freeway from the wrong side, incorrect overtaking etc, how is the Govt responsible for the accidents ? First the Citizens become aware of how to be good citizens and decent drivers, only then the accidents would reduce / stop. For every human mistake (I will not call it error), the easiest is to blame the Govt. And The Hindu is a bakwas paper anyways and so is the editor of this ragtag newspaper unfortunately. I have travelled this road more than once and find it to be fantastic and I thank the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the Highway Authority of India and the Union Govt, for getting this road ready.

The reality is authorities can do nothing. The problem is road sense of the users. Idiots driving at a slow speed in the fast/overtake/right most lane. Idiots swerving across multiple lanes, no indicators, driving in the middle of 2 lanes etc.

Over speeding and not following lane discipline with fast lane changing is the root cause. On right most lane slow vehicle will.move which tempt fast vehicles to change lane.There is no one ro gyrad lane movement and dine slow vehicles like trucks on right most lane. Bikers drive with super high speeds casting accidents.

This is not an express way , it's not fenced all the way , people cross , cars come in one-way ..cops barricade the road , people join from service road and exit to service road just before toll... Who told you this is expressway. This is only a hiway. Please don't spread false message. NHAI itself had said this is a hiway with speed limit of 100 were as expressway has 120 kmph limit. Expressway are different if u have traveled in expressway before you will know

Developed countries have almost all interstate as expressway, it's the people who should learn driving and follow rules. One foolish person actually cause accident and harm others. Didn't like the video title..its like u are blaming the expressway for all the accidents. If there are design flaws at points please get details and share with authority
Good that autos and two wheelers are banned there, they're the most vulnerable category for accidents. And their indisciplined driving on top.
And, most of the accidents are caused by human errors or foolishness only.
Karnataka got nothing for having BJP in powerl for the last five years. Karnataka Got stepmotherly treatment both in railways and in highways despite being the highest tax payer in the country. Even the earlier Congress governments gave stepmother early treatment to Karnataka . Kannadigas should reject both BJP and Congress and elect a kannada party to power in the next election.
