4-6 million children die every year from gastro-enteritis,
mainly in the developing world
Causes of gastro-enteritis (stomach flu) could be bacterial,
viral or parasitic, with a large predominance of viral
etiologies
Main etiologic GE viruses :
- in children: Rotaviruses
- In adults: Viruses causing epidemics
• Mainly Norwalk virus
• Others: Astroviruses and enteric adenoviruses (serotypes 40
and 41)
