  • A pōwhiri is a Māori welcoming ceremony involving speeches, dancing, singing and finally the hongi. It is used to both welcome guests onto a marae. The wero, an aggressive challenge of the visitor at the beginning of the ceremony, is the most spectacular part of the pōwhiri. During this part of the ceremony, Māori warrior will advance cautiously towards the guests with ceremonial weapons, and perform threatening gestures and grimaces, calling out battle screams, and generally giving an impression of being ready to explode into violence against the visitors at any moment.

    Rotorua news headline:
Child, 2, dies after Rotorua driveway accident, family member steals from doctor trying to save child's life
As hospital staff tried to save the life of a 2-year-old boy run over in a Rotorua driveway, a family member swiped a doctor's two phones and a bank card and went on a spending spree.
The child died a short time later but Melissa Herewini had already taken the bank card to four stores in Rotorua and bought alcohol, food, petrol, phone credit and cigarettes.

@@Meow09 you are correct. My comment was too negative. I was only a visitor for 53 hours so I've jumped to conclusions. Apologies.

And... I just remembered that there is an absolutely gorgeous and serene California Redwood forest there. It is completely planted but simply beautiful as most redwood groves are.

Pōwhiri is pronounced Poefurri? Looking for someone pronouncing it on the videos but not finding that.

Pō is pronounced like Paw, Whi is pronounced like fi in the word fit, Ri is pronounced like Reef, with no F. So Paw-Fi-Ree. The R is pronounced as it would be in Spanish or Japanese
