There are many sizes and shapes at BUDS. Many of which can swim sub 7 min pace - just depends on your conditioning and technical skill in the water. The most important swimming at BUDS is swimming with fins so once you are mastering the 500yd CSS in above average time - start using fins...
Well, I can make a length of the pool, 25 yards in 8 to 9 strokes with freestyle. The style of side stroke you are showing here gets about 12. It was at 16 to 18, and I switched from traditional to similar to this. I just can't see how they can get so much glide per stroke. My top side arm comes out of the water just like freestyle. Maybe my scissor kick, like my flutter kick is wimpy.
Not true - I have bench press short arms and of average height. I hit 3-4 strokes per length as well. AND I am not a swimmer other than pre-BUDS / POST BUDS swimming workouts which is more than average
I believe this will explain to others why he can get halfway across the pool underwater. A powerful jump (push-off the wall) and long arms for a strong pull to go along with his high level of fitness. To the others that are 5'9" (or under 6') like myself, we can't expect to replicate this performance (and the 4-5 strokes per length), but we can use the information Mr. Smith gives to us to do 'our' best (even if it may be 6-7 strokes).
Depends how you define LAP. I define LAP as swimming down and back (2 LENGTHS). so in a 25 yd pool it would be 10 laps. BUT do the math you should be able to determine how far 500yds is given the length of a pool
I apologize for sounding so full of myself and I meant no disrespect. Would you be able to share some of the best swim times you have seen for someone around 5'9" (that was not previously a competitive swimmer)? I am consistently +/- a few seconds around 8 flat and feel as if my max potential has been reached. It would be a great inspiration to hear of a 'shorter' person doing a 7 minute swim. Thank you again, and I hope you understand that I respect all of your help and comments, nothing less.
I run out of breath WAY faster than freestyle with long intervals between breaths. I can swim hundreds of yards freestyle but only 100 yards CSS before I have to stop and the room is spinning.
Hello sir, I just got back in the pool last week after a pretty long time and I am learning the CSS. I started with about a 54 second 50 yd and after my third workout i'm down to 46-47 second 50 yd pretty consistently. I've been watching your videos and other videos on sealswcccom to learn the technique. The one of many glaring problems I am having right now is my scissor kick, it sucks. You talk about gliding through the water and I think I am gliding OK at the moment about 5-6 strokes per 25 yds. But every time I scissor kick its like i'm hitting the brakes and not getting much distance out of it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, sir.
5-6 strokes per 25yds is pretty good. That is what most fast swimmers average. The really fast / efficient can get 3-4 strokes but that is usually a collegiate level of swimming.
YOu may need to focus more on how your arms recover. Keep them close to your body to keep the streamline in the water vs placing arms away from your body and acting like a brake. It is real easy to watch in a video if someone is going 2 steps forward / 1 step back doing this stroke. When you recover your arms should be tight to your body the entire time.
Hey Stew. Question. While taking the PST, can you switch which side you do your CSS on? I find the rotating from one side to the other after 400m gives me a second wind that helps me finish strong. Is that allowed?
You are acting like you have to be tall to master swimming. I am not trying to create olympians. There are many great swimmers who are short- ( under 6')

Stew Smith you're so helpful
Mr. Smith,
Would you take any breaks in between sets or is the 1000m continuous? If so, how long should those breaks be?
Yes you can switch sides
2:22 What is the key to speeding up your pace while keeping the 3 second pulls?
Strong kick and tight streamline

Is the 500 yard swim 10 laps or 20 laps

Minimal. I usually get a breath or two and then turn around for the next set. Maybe get a sip of water...etc
How tall is this swimmer/tennis athlete?

I use a ear in, head bearly breaching the water, dolphin kick off the wall, and a strong kick. My arms used for slightly extra glide.
is this safe to do alone?
It is never recommended to swim alone.
@@StewSmith182 thankyou sir, I appreciate it
6'2"

Are you breathing every stroke? Should be able to breathe 5-6 times in a 25yd pool per length.

Dont know if this is relevant to my question but I am 5'11 220 lbs and I am wearing board shorts swimming but they aren't really baggy.

Stew Smith Well that's good news! So I shouldn't worry about my kick?
Do you rest in between sets?
If needed. I like to rest with a 1 min - no hand tread

Did this guy make it through buds?
not yet
Any follow up on how he did in Buds?
